Holiday Traditions

Putting up the Christmas tree at our house is a BIG deal! My husband and I always clashed over when it should go up. He prefers closer to the 25th and I would have it up in August if I could. (Well, maybe that's a bit of an stretch.) Now that my son is old enough to chime in (he's on my side), we do it the day after Thanksgiving.

One of the special traditions we have when putting up the tree is letting my son put the angel on the top. Each year my husband hoists him up on his shoulders and he places it up there. He's always so proud to do it. That's why I wanted to create this layout. I want to capture the magical aspect about being a child and thinking that putting the angel on the tree top is the greatest thing! Pretty soon, we won't be able to lift him anymore.

Technique: I left the backing on some Queen and Company adhesive felt. Then I sprayed it with Glimmer Mist. Once dry, I added glitter and jewels.

So, enjoy the holiday season. And don't forget to scrap those little traditions.

Have a great day! ~Anabelle

The Hand Tree

I thought it would be fun to share our Christmas card and the process I use when making a large number of cards. I like to use the "Henry Ford" method when I have a lot of the same cards to get done. I get all the pieces for the card done and ready, (as pictured below)then simply put them together in an assembly line order. This was the order that I made them in: adhere the card sentiment, all the photos, then the strip of patterned paper, pierce the hole for the brad and then attach the brad. You would be surprised how quickly they go together when you are not constantly switching between glue, punch, piercer and brads.

And here is the finished card:

The idea for the photo came from an advertisement in a magazine that my Mother-in-law found and when I saw it I thought the hands looked like a tree, which made me think it would make a great Christmas photo - just needed to add a star at the top! If you are wondering how we got the shot here is the original photo.

We sat on the stairs starting with Daddy and going down to the youngest - Zach who had his hands straight up in the air. After some trial and error we discovered that the hands were falling right in front of Nate's head so we actually draped a black sweater over him (poor kid, the things his Momma makes him do for a photo LOL). To get the final result all I had to do was some cropping, a little bit of black fill in photoshop, change it to black and white and that was it. Have a great week! Christine

Supplies: Paper, K&Co. Border Punch, Martha Stewart. Other, star brad.

Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree...

I had so much fun playing with the foam ornaments that I decided to do the same thing with a couple of foam cones that I had.  I had previous plans for button trees but thought this would be pretty cool too!  I made two different ones - one with buttons and one just using cut out shapes, sequins and gems as embellishments:

These only took about 45 minutes to make - it's really easy!  You simply punch a circle from the patterned paper and attach using stick pins.  Then you can add buttons with more stick pins, or, add gems and cut out paper shapes!  I had so much fun creating these!

I am seriously getting a kick out of creating Holiday projects!  If you have any to share, please link me up in the comments section, I'd love to see them!!

Making a list...

...checking it twice!

I don't know about you but during the holidays I get a little overwelmed (or maybe a lot overwelmed) with keeping up with gift giving.
I think of things I want to get for people and then 15 minutes later I have forgotten!
Also I will forget that I have already bought some things and end up with too many gifts for  people (not that anyone would complain about that).
Things do get crazy this time of year!
So this year I am trying to be a little more organized.

I made this little notebook to keep track of who I am going to buy for, gift ideas, how much I have spent, what I have bought & where I bought it, etc., etc.
This will hopefully help me keep all of my Christmas gift-buying information in one easy-to-reach place!

This notebook started off as a basic 3x5 inch little notebook that you can pick up at Wal-Mart or something for about $1 (if that!).

Since this is for me to use during Christmas, I wanted it to be cute!
And it is so simple to make!
I covered it with sheet music and embellished with ribbon, fibers, glittery alphabet letters, & a flower.

I decorated the inside of the cover also.

And I added a pocket on the back cover to use for receipts and coupons.

Supplies: Alphabet stickers (Making Memories), Cardstock (Prism), Flowers (Prima), Pearls (Doodlebug), Ribbon (Doodlebug), Misc (sheet music, yarn)
All supplies are from December Scripts kit from Scrap Etc.

I hope this helps me be better organized!
Now I need to get some shopping done!

Happy Holidays!

Pinecone Ornament

We have an ornament tradition in our house.  Ever since the kids were little, we have both bought and made a Christmas ornament every year for each of the kids.  We write the year on the ornament and if they were purchased, we also write where they were bought.  So my tree is a hodgepodge of ornaments but I love watching the kids remember each ornament.  They also know, when they leave to start their lives, they get to take their ornaments.  I thought I would share with this pine cone ornament we are making this year.

Supplies:
  • Styrofoam Egg
  • 12 x 12 Pattern Paper
  • Ribbon
  • Dressmakers Pins (also known as lace or bridal pins)
  • Glue Gun (not pictured)
Start by cutting your pattern paper into 1 inch strips.  Next trim those strips into 1 inch pieces.  You will use most of your 12 x 12 piece of pattern paper depending on how tight you layer your pieces.

Next take your 1 inch pieces and fold in edges to make a triangle.  You should have extra paper at the top of the piece.  I make a bunch of these pieces so when I start layering, I have plenty.

Now you are ready to start placing these pieces onto the Styrofoam egg.  You want to start at the narrows part of the egg.  Place two triangles with their tips touching and pin using the dressmaker pins.  You want the pins near the very bottom of the triangle piece.  Place two more pieces on either side of these first two, overlapping the edges.

Keep layering the pieces , overlapping as you go around the egg.  You want to make sure you are covering up the dressmaker's pins as you layer each piece.  Continue all the way until you reach the top of the egg.

Don't worry about the top pins showing, we are going to cover them with a ribbon.  I used two 5 inch pieces of ribbon and then one 8 inch piece.  I made little loops with the two five inch pieces and hot glued them to the top.  I then made a large loop with my larger ribbon piece so I could hang it from the tree.

These little ornaments can be done also using ribbon instead of pattern paper, although I would recommend "stiffer" ribbon.  But with so many pattern paper choices out there, you can make them any color or design you wish!

Supplies: Pattern Paper (Fancy Pants Designs); Ribbon (Fancy Pants Ribbon); Misc (Dressmaker pins, Styrofoam Egg)

I Love Templates

I love using templates, always have especially in art class as a child! :) They are a fun and easy way to make your own embelleshments in the colors you want on your projects. It is especially easy today with the internet and google, the possibilities are endless. :) I used some Christmas templates that I downloaded off of the internet to use on my December daily entry.

Cut your template out with a craft knife, you can also print your template directly to your pattern paper to save time.

Now add your new embellishment to your project and create! It is easy and I can see using this tree as garland for the holidays, on wreaths and ornaments! You can also used the negative as a journaling spot or mask for painting! So keep an eye out for next week's entry! ;)

Have a fun and creative weekend!

Adhesive: Kokuyo;Pattern Paper: Amy Butler;KI Memories; Misc: Xacto Knife

Christmas Card House
I love Christmas time.  One of my favorite traditions is finding our mailbox filled with Holiday cards.  I love to save them and am always looking for a decorative way to keep them.  I found this wonderful paper mache box at a local craft store.  It was so inexpensive and the perfect size.  The one I found is 9x8 but I have seen them much larger.  I decorated it with a mix of Basic Grey and My Mind's Eye papers.  When I finished it I glazed it with a clear glitter.  For the chimney, I cut out rectangles of paper and glued them on in a brick formation.  I went around each "brick" with liquid applique in white.  I love the way it puffs up after a quick dry with the heat gun.

The house that I bought didn't have a scalloped roof so I improvised.  I punched out circles and overlaped them around the bottom of the roof.  I outlined each circle with glitter glue and covered any raw edges with a tiny red ric rac trim.

I hope you try this project and check out your craft store isles for these houses.  This house is heading for my mom's house this weekend.  I hope she likes it!  Have a wonderful time getting ready for Christmas!  Enjoy! Love, Melissa

Don't Throw It Away!

Happy Tuesday!

I was reorganizing my clear stamps this weekend. I ended up with several window tins left over. Being the 'green' girl that I am trying to be, I knew I wanted to make something with them. I decided on making little ornaments. They ended up being a lot of fun to do and were really easy. First, I layered paper inside the tin. Then, I added some felt and little goodies. For this particular tin I used a die cut, velvet flower and crystals. Then, I painted some Mod Podge onto the front and added glitter. Some ribbon, a rubon, more jewels and Stickles finished up the outside.

That's it. I've made several more and will probably be giving them to my son's teachers this year. Or maybe the neighbors. Or maybe I'll just keep them for my tree. ;)

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful day! ~Anabelle

Always There

We received some sad news last week, Deli Joe, my sweet dog of twelve years has a tumor and the vet believes it to be cancerous. Aside from all the normal emtions that come with news like that I have an urgency to take as many everyday photos of Deli that I can. I have taken photos of him through the years and scrapped some pages, but I don't think I have really recorded or captured just how important he is to me and what a special part of our family he is. I am so thankful that I still have some more time with him and I am going to make sure he has lots of pages in our family scrapbooks. I am sorry for the sad post, but I wanted to take this as an opportunity to remind you to scrap about the furry members of your family and all that they add to your life. Make sure to include them in your Holiday photos this season -especially in your family pictures. Have a great week! Christine

Holiday Ornaments!!

Hey everyone!  Can you believe that Christmas is only 24 days away?! We are planning on putting our tree up tomorrow or Tuesday - the girls are SO excited!  We've been busy making ornaments for our tree and to give as gifts.  I have been seeing these cute little handmade ornaments everywhere and had to give them a try!  They are SO easy to make and inexpensive too!  All you will need is patterned paper, circle hole punch, pins, ribbon, and styrofoam balls!

You simply punch the patterned paper and attach it to the styrofoam ball with the pins!  Then you loop the ribbon and attach it with the pins as well.  I crinkled mine up a bit for a bit of added dimension.  See?  I told you it was easy!  I hope you all enjoy making these as much as we did!  The girls can't wait to give them to their teachers!

Thankful tag book

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and is finishing up with those leftovers!

My parents and one of my brothers came to my house for Thanksgiving. Anytime they are over during the holidays, I pull out so many of my scrapbooks and mini-albums for us to look through and reminisce. As I was gathering things this time, I stumbled upon this tag book I had made some time last year & totally forgotten about! It is always fun to go back and look through things I made a while ago (and may not even remember I have made)!

This little book is relatively simple.
I covered the tags with paper and then used colored paperclips to attach pictures & quotes. Then I just embellished the book with the blue flowers that I cut out of patterned paper and various "thankful" themed stickers & rub-ons from my stash.

I think I am going to make an updated tag book with pictures from this year that I will pull out at next year's Thanksgiving. And I might even see if I can get around to making a Christmas-themed version!

Thanks for looking and have a great weekend!
