Looming MMM deadline
I think it was around this time last year ... a week before the MMM '08 deadline ... that I started my projects for my entry. My husband had just returned from Iraq, we left our home in San Diego and moved to Alabama. As always, my office was the first to be unpacked. For some reason my husband encouraged me to enter. I have no idea how he heard about the contest and have no idea what made him prompt me...and I have no idea what made me think I could pull off an entry in a week's time with our entire home packaged neatly in box after box after box...towers of boxes that was our home. But, I did. It was my third year entering. Never really phased me in the least that I wasn't selected in previous years. Even losing the single layout didn't bother me as I have way too many layouts anyway. So, I entered in the nick of time. Submitted and easily forgot about the contest. When there was an anonymous announcement that they had been called...I assumed it was true and shrugged off another year not selected. I believe that was on a Thursday.
Tuesday morning I was out on a 5 mile walk with a girlfriend and my daughter in the jogging stroller. It was 9am and I swear it must have been 100 degrees already outside in Alabama. When the phone rang...I looked at the number. It was an unfamiliar area code. I absolutely panicked. I almost didn't want to answer the phone and leave it to go to voice mail. But, I did answer it. Patty greeted me and explained the purpose of the call. I started to cry...blush. It was so completely unexpected. I had thought the calls had already gone out (the anonymous thread was a hoax). Although the term surreal is simply a cliche...I couldn't describe it any other way. So...I sat there crying...which...I NEVER do...blush. Patty had a whole spiel of information she was attempting to relay to me. I didn't catch any of it.
When the call ended...and I sat there numb...I realized...I would then have to explain my reaction to my girlfriend. My girlfriend Monique is a woman who wouldn't cry if her leg broke in two (that's actually true...I was there when she broke her ankle for the SECOND time ... and not a single tear welled in her eyes;). And a woman who didn't even know what scrapbooking was. No, the my tears weren't because someone had died...blush...which was her first question...but that I had won a contest. lol Oiy...I would have rathered been alone for THAT call thank.you.very.much! LOL Unable to share the news with anyone that "GOT" scrapbooking was PURE TORTURE!
Hmm...I had a point somewhere in here;) My point...you can do it! If you're nearly there...finish it up. If you haven't started...pull yourself together and get 'er done! And DON'T over think it! Do what you love and love what you're doing...it will translate! A LOT of this comes down to luck! I was and still am an unrecognizable name. My resume was and still is meager:) I'm a hobbyist that was recognized:D My layouts layed with thousands of other very talented artists. The stars were aligned. You just never know! And that is the truth! So...Enter, enter, enter...and best of luck to EVERYONE!!!!
Love, Tracy Austin

A big surprise for a little girl
My eldest daughter visited my in-laws in San Diego for two weeks in June. Her name is Skye. She was born in England and was named after the beautiful Isle of Skye, an island off the north-western coast of Scotland. When she was 2 we moved to Texas and I had painted a mural of a sky in her bedroom. And…as goes life in the military, we have endured 4 moves since that home. She is now 8 and she will still reminiscence about her room in Texas. Two weeks and three hundred dollars later…I started with this:

And ended up with…

(You’ll have to cope with my cruddy photos with my cheap-o digi camera.)
Which elicited the response:

Two gallons of “Sea Tickle” paint, one quart of white, and a tester of gray to create her sky. A few frames from TJMaxx hung at her eye level for an art gallery. A shadow box, a pretty glass bowl and a fancy cake stand for her to display all her 8-year-old found treasures. A cheap princess bed netting transformed with beaded trim, silk hydrangea petals, and hot glue. Two gold rose wreath frames, also from TJMaxx, gutted and hung as wreaths above the bed.
(As for the bedding, it had to remain. When left with a suitcase in her room to pack for San Diego, she had stuffed that fuzzy purple atrocity in her luggage with only enough room to squeeze in a single bathing suit. With some discussion of the practicality of her decision, she repacked (with assistance). Yep, the bedding is a permanent fixture for the time being;)
The quote on the wall was the best deal of the lot. It is something I say to each of my girls at least once a day. An “I love you” is always followed by, “forever and ever and always and always” in our home (…and on days where patience has been tried…the added ending of “never will I ever stop loving you”;) The cost? $15!! That’s right! $15 for a custom cut vinyl quote for the wall. The brilliant suggestion was offered by my girlfriend Kate to check with a local sign shop. I actually ended up at a local copy store. The letters are a beautiful metallic gold. Definitely the crème de la crème of the room.
An exhausted mommy, a very happy daughter, and another wee monkey wondering exactly when we’ll be tackling her room;)
Welcome home baby girl! You were missed immensely!
Love, Tracy Austin

Monster Kid...
Now, you know I'd never really call any of my kids a "monster". At least not in writing, where its saved for posterity. (not denying that I might've muttered it under my breath during a tantrum though)
But... I didn't... she did! :) To get the full effect, you'll have to imagine her switching from her usual high-pitched sweet voice to a total monster-deep growl to deliver this line. ;)
In other news, I got some GREAT GREAT GREAT news that has quite put me over the moon. Required a nice family dinner out to celebrate and everthing. I don't know if I can spill it publicly yet though...I'll let ya know. Just know that its BIG and definitely WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DEE HOOOOOOOOOOO worthy! (/tease) LOL ;)
XOXO...Stac :)

Easy Vintage
When I was starting to scrapbook, I had always been intimidated with vintage looking layouts. But I loved the look so much. I later on realized that with the right materials used and the right color tone for pictures (even if you use a recent picture of your family member), one can easily pull it off. The picture I used here was taken on an early morning. I turned off my flash and took advantage of the natural light and the shadows. I liked the outcome and even without much photo editing, it came out perfect for a vintage looking page. Materials: Websters Pages, chipboard from Scrapping Outback, chipboard letters Creative Imagination, Background CS Basic Grey, 7 Gypsies rub-ons, Hambly Transparency. Have a great day! Iris

Charm Bracelets
I love charm bracelets. My most prized charm bracelet is my grandmothers. Each time I wear it, it reminds me of when I was small and would hear her coming into a room. To me no noise is as quite as special as that of a charm bracelet. This bright and cheery charm bracelet is super easy to make and is going to be my summer charm bracelet. It takes less than 30 minutes to create from start to finish. Products Used:Maya Road Trinket Beads Birds of a Feather Maya Road Trinket Beads Hearts and Butterflies Maya Road Trinket Beads Tutti Fruity Maya Road Trinkets Ribbon MarigoldJump Rings 7" Bracelet I hope you give this a try... it will make you smile each time you wear it. Birthday Tags are fun!
Here are a few tags I created for two special people... my mom and my niece. I can't stand the thought of buying a $5. card. To me they seem to not have as much sentimental meaning... it does have some because you did pick it out, sign it and send it off but I feel something handmade has so much more... so instead of sending cards I like to make tags and write my sentiment on the back. This way the recipient can use the tag as a bookmark or just hang it someplace special. The great thing here is tags are fast and if you are like me... someone who seems to always be in a hurry to catch up... tags are perfect. Supplies Used:Office Supply Tags, ColorBox Fluid Chalk Ink ( Dark Peony), Pink Paislee Royal Crown Clear Stamp, Kimberly Poloson Flourishes Clear Stamps, Maya Road Philadelphia-Uppercase Alphabet, Ranger Silver Acrylic Paint, Fine Silver Glass Glitter, Koh-I-Noor Black Pen, MM Ledger Paper Wishing you a wonderful day. Love it when...
I get whole bunch of new goodies to play with! :)
Confession: I'm not really a scrap shopper. I'm a scrap browser. I have a *very* limited scrap budget per month so I have to really love something to pull out greenbacks for it. LOL :)
So this month, some yummies that I've been lusting for finally arrived...October Afternoon!!! Woo-de-hoooooo! :)
And I'm no longer a scrap kit virgin. Yeah, I know I was on the MFM team and *LOVED* Shari's kits, but I had never actually bought a kit before. Till I saw the Q-Tea ( http://www.qteakits.blogspot.com/) June "Oh Deer" kit. Deer? You know I had to have it! :)
And last but certainly not least...remember when I was gone to GASC a couple of weeks ago? There was a booth there that had something totally unique and different going on...very cool niche stuff. What is it? Crafty Secrets Heartwarming Vintage Collection ( http://www.craftysecrets.com/). I'd never heard of it but the dt stuff they had floating about pulled my tired self right in there and perked me right up! Sooo cute and cool! :) I got a couple of the little journal pads and have fallen in love! Need to get some of the little sticker goodness they have next! LOL :)
So, I actually had time to play with these yummy new goodies this weekend and this is what I came up with... ;) So what are y'all lovin' on lately product-wise, kit-wise, trend-wise? What do I need to see so that I can set aside my July budget to get my hot little hands on? ;) XOXO...Stac :)
