Plans

Every time the New Year rolls around I find myself planning things and generally there are two types of plans - those that involve cleaning up clutter and those that involve preparing for things coming up during the year. So, during my latest planning phase I have combined the two...

I made this journal using lots of scraps from last year's projects and plan to use it for our next trip OS (the seeds of which we planted today - Cuba & Central America or Sri Lanka & the Maldives...Hmmm...) But back on topic... Using up ribbon and paper scraps I decorated this adaptable journal by "My Book" and now I have a journal that is ready to "GO". I plan to fill each small section under the ribbon with inspirational quotes about travel....my first will be "The compulsive need to travel is a recognised physical condition." (Michael Palin)....and let me just say that there appears to be no cure for it!!

Cheers,

Amelia

Sheeee's Back...

My littlest chickadee has been so sick. It started as a little cold, but just progressively got worse and worse. The infection spread...her eyes swelled shut, her ears both ruptured again, her fever was 103 for day after day as she slept, letting her body fight off the buggies. It happened gradually so that we didn't fully realize just how sick she was until she started getting better. But she's been on the mend now for a bit and we are able to enjoy her fantastic personality again. I missed it...I missed her laugh...her cute little voice that she turns growly to be silly...I missed her goofy croc-footed running around the house. But she is back and I am so very thankful. And the little piece of good in this latest buggie run-in, is that her repeated ear rupturing for the last few months is finally leading us to an ENT/allergy specialist. Fingers crossed that he can help my littlest chickadee (aka "Snot Bucket" LOL) when we see him next week! :)

And in honor of Van being back to her fun self...wanted to share this layout of her! :) Thanks for looking! ...Staci :)

Got kids? Get sunblock.

I went to the doctor's today and filled out the form indicating my age as 33.  Of course, I also had to fill in my birthdate.  So in the course of the exam the doctor marvels, in a non-impressive way, "Wow, 34 years old with over 18 cases of BCC."  He said more after that...but I stuck on the 34 comment.  He was looking at the chart and said 34 although I had clearly wrote 33.  Then, I started to do the calculation...born in 1973...2003 I was 30...2004 (mental finger counted, 31) 2005 (2 mental fingers counted, 32)...2008 ... OMG!  How in the world did I make a mistake on my age??  How utterly embarrassing.  I have even taken to calling my girls by the wrong names lately!  My Hippocampus is obviosly shrinking...lovely;)

No worries about losing half the monologue from the doctor... all too familiar with all he had to say anyway.  BCC is a form of skin cancer that eats away at the skin and if treated...won't kill ya:)  The cause?  Cummulative hours of sun exposure and severe sunburns in childhood.  I, a full Scot, grew up in Southern California with an olive skinned family.  We lived in the sun. I was never meant to be golden...but I fought that fact.

Anywho...my point:  If you have kiddos...lather them in sunblock.  Their chances for developing skin cancer doubles from a single burn that produces blisters and peels.  And, well...my other point.  I start treatment tomorrow and lasts for about 6 weeks.  The treatment is chemical burns that produces rather large and angry lesions on the face.  Lovely.  No longer are they willing to do surgeries on me...I have had too many.  So...if I see you at CHA...or you attend the Alabama Scrapfest...know that the scabs on my face and neck are not from an infectious disease:S  Oh how I loathe traveling during treatments:S  The good news in all this is that the scarring from this procedure is minimal:)

Trust me on the sunblock;)

Off to watch a foreign film with the husband:)

Love, Tracy Austin

Starting off the New Year...
This year I am determined to have a few gift tags and cards created and on hand to use at a moments notice. It seems I always plan on doing this each year and well... never seem to accomplish this goal. Well this year, I am doing it and have 5 gift tags completed. The sentiments are by Teresa McFayden. I tried to make some without so much of a vintage flair but it was just not going to happen. It was torture. My style is 100% vintage. This is one thing I really like about the MMM this year. We are all so different in style. I feel truly blessed to be on this team and must admit sometimes it makes me a little nervous.

It was so much fun digging in my stash to find scraps of this and that to use on these tags. I never throw away my scraps... I just cannot do it. I don't care how small a piece of paper or trim is... I will keep it because I know I will use it, especially my Maya Road Velvet Trims and Scallop Ric Rac. You can see that these little scraps worked perfectly for my tags.

Another thing I LOVE is glitter. I'm sure most of you know this by now. If you have a vintage flair to your style and have not tried glitter you really should give it a go especially glass glitter. I use Antique Silver Fine Glass Glitter by Art Glitter on all kinds of projects and layouts. I highly recommend you use their adhesives when glittering. My favorite is their Designer Dries Clear. You can see I trimmed one of the sentiments with this glitter.

If glitter scares you a bit try Platnium Stickles by Ranger. This is a great glitter glue that really adds a nice touch to any project. This product is so versatile and extremely easy to use. You can write, dot, dash and draw on paper and projects.

I hope you give a few of my favorite products a try. I promise you will have loads of fun.

Finally!!

The kids are finally back in school and I finally feel like I can start my new year. I just can’t get into the new year thing when everyone is still at home (messing things up!) and we are not in our normal routine. (Can I just say that I love vacation but I crave routines!) Anyway, I feel like today is the start of my new year. My chance to clear the slate and tackle my to-do list! As much as I dislike the weather and lack of sunshine in January, I do love the fresh start and all the organizational / office supplies advertised this time of year! And I love how they are so widespread in the scrap booking world too. From stamps to clips to labels and stickers, the products are endless and so are the possibilities. I also love how they can jazz up a page without much effort. For example, for this page, I took a very office-y pattern paper, added a collage of photos and a few accents, and voila!, a finished page! Gotta love the ease in that! Give it a try!

Resolve...

Well, in the spirit of all things "New Year", I decided to make a list of the things that I want to get done this year... only a list  - no cool pages like that one by Caroline just below (totally cool!!). Part of my list is to do an album just for me. Not about me - but for me. I often do pages about myself, but this one will be full of sayings and stuff that I come across during the year. At the end of the year I hope to have an inspiration album of sorts. So stay tuned for some pages - or better yet let me know if you have done a similar thing..what worked for you?what didn't?

Cheers..and Happy 2008.

Scrap Room Additions
I just had to share a few of the fun things I got for Christmas this year that will be making their home in my scrap room.

Look at these babies!!! They are 18 inches long.

I got them from my good friend Cindy (she is the gorgeous gal on the cover of the February issue of MM).

And this ...

A few years ago my family started a tradition of drawing names, and whoever you draw, you have to make them something. My brother had my name this year (and I got his) and he made me this awesome shelf! He also knitted me a scarf!! He is too cool!

And then for some vintage goodness ...

My friend Stephanie, is great a finding vintage goodies. She gave these to me in hopes that I might be able to find some use for them in my scrapbooking. I can't wait to use them!!!

So, what did scrappin' goodies did you get for Christmas?

Unexpected Friend...

2008_01_02 164 copy.jpg

Yes, this is scrapping related! LOL :)

A friend recently asked what she'd need for basic tools to jump into paper scrapping. I listed my usual suspects--stapler, dymo labeler, markers, paper cutter, fine tip & regular scissors. Later, when I was scrapping that night, I realized that I forgot a little something that I use on almost every layout...baby powder! :) I use it to unsticky the stickers that I plan on using. I'm then able to rearrange them on my layout-in-progress till I'm happy with the design. When I'm ready to stick everything down, I just use my regular adhesive runner on the stickers too. It's a little thing, but it really does help me create! :)

So what unusual tips/tricks/items do you use to make your scrapping easier, faster, better? :) Share with us! :) ...Staci

When The Holidays Just Pass You By
Christmas and New Year just passed us by. That's because my three year old daughter, my only child, got seriously sick for the first time. She had a major case of eye infection which caused the bacteria in her body to rise to scary levels. She had very high temperature and was already chilling. She could not eat and she would vomit her milk. When we took her to the hospital, she was immediately admitted and she had to go through several examinations. She was pricked, injected, examined, and had to have a tube inserted in her hand (dextrose) for support in medication and nutrition. It was such a scary scary time for me. We were just released before new year's eve but she is still being monitored. Being the mom that I am, I cried endless tears and unconsciouly wiped my eyes with the same hands that comforted my little daughter. And so now, I have the eye infection! But I still am thankful that Nicole is better now.

I appologize for not being able to answer emails, not being able to participate in the forums, and for just being out of touch. I will catch up with everyone once Nicole is better.

Hope everyone had a happy new year.

Iris
