Tutorial - Make a Filmstrip in Photoshop

I love the look of filmstrip photos.  You know, the ones you sit in the booth at the mall, make funny faces and then wait 2 minutes for?

Creating a look similar to this has become ever so popular with scrapbookers recently as a great way to add a lot of little photos to a page.  This especially works for repetitive photos that tell a story such as the ones below of my son climbing into the pool.  I love how all the shots capture the action but to have all of these as full sized photos on a page would not leave much room for anything else.  I have lots of great close-ups of him in the pool that I want to use my focal photos but if I turn these supporting photos into a filmstrip I can still add these to the page without overwhelming it.

Creating a filmstrip is pretty easy in Photoshop.  You just need to do some math first.

(I know that you are looking at the length of this post and thinking, easy???  Just know that I always break down everything into micro steps so nobody gets lost.  Lots of you will fly through multiple steps in a matter of seconds.)

Decide on the number of photos to be used (my case - 5)

Decide on the size of your photos (my case - 1 ½” x 1”)

Decide on the width of your borders (I always use 1/8” or 0.125”)

Now comes the math. :)

You need to add borders to both sides of your photo so you add ¼” (1/8 + 1/8) to the photo width (my case - 1.5 + 0.25 = 1.75 or 1 ¾”).  This is final width of your filmstrip.

You now need to calculate the length of your filmstrip with borders between each photo and one at the top and bottom.  I always add one border mentally to the bottom of each photo and multiply that by the number of photos.  Then I add in one more border for the very top and you have your final measurement.  Huh?  LOL.  Look at my math and it might make more sense. [my case – take the photo height 1”+1/8”(for a bottom border ) = 1.0125 or 1 1/8”  Now multiply that by the number of photos – 1.125 x 5 = 5.625 or 5 5/8”.  Add to that number one more border for the very top – 5.625 + 0.125 = 5.75 or 5 ¾”.  I swear that was the hardest part!)

So now you have the dimensions of your film strip (my case – 1.75” by 5.75”).

Now open a new document in PS that is this size. File > New and then type in measurements (or Ctrl+N and then type in measurements).

Now crop all your photos to size (my case – 1 ½” x 1”).

Now there are two options here.  You can use your move tool (Shift+V) and click and drag each photo over to the blank filmstrip leaving 1/8” between each photo.  Totally easy but it’s sometimes hard to get precise spacing.

Or your second option - I like to use guides.  They make it really easy to line everything up precisely.

To place a guide click View > New Guide and a pop up window will appear which you can type in where you want the guide to appear.  (while we are on this step make sure you have “snap” turned on – this will make your photos “snap” to your guides when you drag them onto your blank filmstrip).

So again you need to do some math to figure out where the guides are to be.  I make a guide for the left side of the photos and all the tops of the photos.  (my case – vertical guide at 0.125 and horizontal guides at 0.125, 1.25, 2.375, 3.5, 4.625, 5.75 ) When the pop up window appears just choose whether you want a vertical or horizontal line and the measurement you need it at.

The guides will appear on your blank filmstrip as blue lines.  These lines do not print – you only see them on screen.

Now if all that typing in of measurements is not for you, you can also click on the ruler and while holding the button down drag towards the blank canvas and a guide will appear.  You can just look along the ruler to see where you need to place your guide.  I usually do this but it will just depend on how your brain is wired and what method you like to follow. J Seriously, wiring up there is a bit different for everyone.  You can get either vertical or horizontal lines this way.

Once you have all your guides in place you should have something like this.

Now drag all your photos onto the blank filmstrip (use the move tool - Shift+V). Since you have “snap” on, the corner of the photo will just, well, snap in place.

You will now have this. (You should have the same finished look whether you created guides or not.)

Now flatten your image Layer > Flatten Image.  Now your white borders will appear.

You are all set to print this now (remember the blue lines do not print).

Kind of a lot of steps but if you want to save it as a template you can skip all the set up next time.

To do this go back a few steps to before you added in your photos - the one where you have all the guides in place but it is still a blank filmstrip.  Save it there.  Name the file with the size of photos it takes.  Then next time all you will need to do is open the file, crop your photos and drag them into place.  So fast the second time around!

Now how do you print this?  In this case I could print it on a standard 4x6” photo (remember the final size of the filmstrip is 1.75”x5.75”).  To do this I open up a new document in PS sized 4”x6”.  You can then drag your flattened film strip onto to this blank photo.  Flatten the image and print (or if you are like me and hate to waste photo paper make another filmstrip for another page and print them together on one page.)

Think you will try it?  Let me know or show me what you make.  I would love to see it. :)

A Linky-Loo Day

So I am still muddling through :).  I just wanted to say thanks for all the warm hearted wishes of the past few days.  I really appreciate every one of you.  Each message has made me smile and helped me remember that this world is filled with many, many kind people.  I promise to share more when things start to settle.  It is just too long of a story for right now.  I want to be able share it when there is a happy ending.  I know my happy ending is out there - I'm just waiting for it to show up!!!  *waving* Hello, I'm over here....

I have been scrapbooking.  Mainly assignments but it is comforting to be at my table with my supplies and to be cutting and gluing.  I am much better at dealing with things if  I am busy and having assignments (which technically is work but never feels that way!!) gets me scrapping when I am not sure I would otherwise make time for it right now.

But that means I cannot show you what I am working on (and it is turning out really well so it is killing me not to share).  So today will have to be a linky-loo day.

First linky-loo - remember my Kindness layout last week?  Look what Eve made.  She made my day when she emailed and showed how she used the idea of my page and created a double pager for herself.  Love, love, love it.  Thanks for sharing Eve.

Second linky-loo - want to read how a 20-something-man who had never been to a scrapbook convention saw the GASC in Grand Rapids a few weeks ago?  Poor guy was totally out of his league.  He was super sweet and sat in one of my classes and made a valiant effort to participate in the class but quickly realized that me shouting cut this and cut that was not as easy as it seemed.  The ladies all around him tried to help but he eventually just laughed and gave up.  It is funny to see scrapbooking through the eyes of a complete newbie - I think he might have been just a wee bit shocked over all the scrapbooking gear we tote to these shows! lol  Doesn't he know we might need it????

And that is it for today.  Hope everyone is having a great day! :) :) :)  Love ya all!

Paper Therapy

Do you ever engage in paper therapy?  You know, time spent with paper, glue and scissors?  Where you can be relaxing and creating and doing something you love while your mind is free to sort out some problems?

This was me this past weekend.  And boy did I need some paper therapy! :)

I haven't mentioned it here on my blog but life has thrown up on me.  Not a very nice picture I know but I can't pretty it up.  First, let me mention that my family (and extended family) is fine.  But in the last week everything else in our lives is different and not so great right now.  Now, I am not quite ready to share all the details but to say I have been distracted is an understatement.

I am not posting this 'cause I want to engage in a pity party.  Actually, I am pretty positive.  As you can see in the above page I made a layout reciting my mantra - life CANNOT get me down!  This is the page I started my paper therapy with.  Though I am not quite ready to record the events that have changed our lives so drastically I was ready for a paper pep talk. And you know what?  It worked.  Just getting some of my feelings onto paper made me feel better.  Scrapbooking is my comfort and it made sense to me to turn to the familiar.

One of the most important things I have taken from scrapbooking is an appreciation of the small things.  Scrapbooking has caused me to look at my life with new eyes to capture all the details of us.  And with that new sense of observation came a new sense of appreciation.  Appreciation of what makes us unique and what makes me happy.  I love that I can look through my pages right now when times are tough for us and smile at everything that makes up our life.  I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all the little details that I have recorded.  If my pages do not last to reach another generation (and that has never been my intention) all the time and effort I have put into my pages will not have been wasted 'cause I am not sure I could appreciate them more than I do now.

So.  I know that it is sometimes hard to read a tone of voice when reading but know that it is all written with a smile on my face.  There are a lot of you who read this blog who I consider friends and I do not want you to worry.  I can take anything life decides to throw at me and I am ready for the next thing.  I know it is bound to be good!! :)  I am looking forward to discovering what it will be.

Back to regular posting tomorrow.  I just wanted to take time out today to share how much I appreciate this hobby and everyone out there who reads this blog. :)

OH and I am almost caught up with emails from Grand Rapids.  I promise to get to you all in the next day or so. :)

Summer Album Cover + more GASC photos

So remember the summer album I started to have a place to record moments from our summer vacation?  (here and here)  I have finished Magnus' cover.

Here is the front.

And here is the back.

The yellow circle is chipboard covered in paper so it gives it a bit of lift.  I just randomly wrote his name all over it to give it a fun design.

I have a few more pages filled in for their albums but I need to finalize them and then I will post photos.

And now I thought I would share some more photos from the GASC - Grand Rapids.  (Chattanooga registration is open if you want to join the fun next time.)

This was my schedule for Saturday.

And some class action shots.

And I had a book signing on Saturday (always makes me feel glamourous lady!! LOL) and look who was in the MM booth while I was there.

That is Beth Williams on the left and Corrie Schaffeld on the right.  Beth is the Executive Editor for Memory Makers magazine and Corrie is a designer for Memory Makers books.  Both are awesome people who I am happy to get to work with.

And you want to know what the best part of my trip to Grand Rapids?  After a long day of teaching I got to come "home" to this...

My kidlets.   All clean and ready for bed thanks to Grandma and Auntie.  Loved getting to kiss them goodnight and relive the experiences of the day as they recited their adventures in the hotel and surrounding area.  The best!

Color Choices - is there a right or wrong?

Today is just a quick post to let you know I have a new article up here.  It is about the color choices we make for our scrapbook pages.

More scrappy stuff coming soon but life has sort of taken over right now and I am trying to balance it all.  So if I seem slow to respond to emails or message boards then know I am just juggling some things right now and will be back full force asap.

I "almost" left my husband for this...

It was love at first sight.

While in Grand Rapids I went to see a store called Pages In Time.  I have to admit to dragging my feet a bit about going to a scrapbook store while at a scrapbook convention but almost had a heart attack when I walked in.  I mean, seriously.  I have never, ever, ever in my life seen a store this big with so much scrappy goodness crammed in there.  I never even knew stores this big existed!  The above photo is just one - yes one! - aisle of paper.  There were about 5 more like this not to mention all the embellishments, albums and other yummy scrappy goodness.

Now you have to keep in mind that my local store is small.  I love them but their total paper including cardstock isn't even this much as seen above.  So as you can imagine I was not prepared.

But the story gets better.  I went with Staci Etheridge who was there teaching at the GASC also.  Want to see her reaction????

There "might" have been some skipping up and down the aisles.  You see, she was not prepared either.  I am not sure anyone really could be.  They should probably hang a warning sign outside the store for out-of-towners!

So there was Staci and I acting like total idiots running all over and shouting back and forth to each other about the yumminess we were both finding.

Seriously.  Total idiots.

Want to know the ridiculous part of the whole story?  We only had 15 minutes.  We were due back at the hotel for dinner and people were waiting on us.

15 minutes!!!!!

I am pretty sure I could have spent a week there.

The locals and the staff just giggled at us and hopefully enjoyed the show we were putting on.  They were seriously friendly in there so I am sure they laughed and later that night repeated the story of the two crazies who were in the store earlier that day.

Want to know something even more ridiculous?  Apparently we went to the "small" store!  There are two of these stores and we went to the SMALL one.  I am pretty sure my heart couldn't have taken it if we had gone to the big one.

Both Staci and I left with head aches from the sheer joy of it and we were only about 15 minutes late for dinner!

Back from Grand Rapids :)

Wow!  Did I ever have a blast this past weekend in Grand Rapids for the GASC.  I cannot get over how stunning the city of GR is!  The convention center was right downtown and there was so much to do with the kidlets, all within a few blocks.  I took a lot of photos while there so be prepared for lots of images today. :)

Here is the convention center... it was so gorgeous!

Look at that roof!

This is what I did all day. :)

I was teaching and scrapping with some really wonderful woman (and a few men).  Have I ever mentioned how much I love meeting fellow scrappers?

And want to see who attended a class?

My mom and Harper both attended my clock class.  Look at how hard they are working!  My mom is not a scrapper and I love that she just dove right in and started playing.  Must be where I get it from!

And this lovely woman totally made Harper's day by asking for her autograph.  She is still talking about it! (thanks!)

And my sister also took one my classes as well as a Mom-to-be class with another instructor.  She also is not a scrapper so I really admire the fact that she got into the spirit of things!

And some more random scrappiness. (scrap + happiness = scrappiness - hee hee, is that a word??)

In the above photo on the right that is Harper being my helper.  She was a great teacher's assistant!

And I realized that there is someone who I consistently forget to photograph - my volunteers!  These woman who I affectionately dub my "Vanna's" help me in class and are amazing, beautiful woman who give up some of their scrappy time to help me.  I want them to know that I really appreciate their helping hands even if I do forget to photograph them!  Thanks ladies!!

I have tons of fun stories from the show but they will have to wait as I hear the hammock calling me.  It is saying I need a nap! :)

More later.

(If you see a photo of yourself here on the blog feel free to email me for a copy.  I know hardly any of us scrappers have action shots of us at work and I happily will share them.  Just let me know which photo you are in and I will email you a full version that you can print.)

Withdrawal

From the internet that is.  You see, it has been incredibly stormy around here the past few days and with thunder, lightening and wind - things happen!   And that thing was my internet connection!

Talk about withdrawal.  I mean, I live in the middle of no where - aka the country-side and I depend in the internet.  OK. I will admit to having a major city a short jaunt away but in reality I live with dirt roads and sometimes spotty connection to the wide world via the internet.

I have sort of been lulled lately with really good internet connections (minus the email drama of last week!) and was shocked when I clicked and nothing happened!

I resorted to the tiny screen of my husband's blueberry (affectionate name given to his blackberry - but that is another story) but seriously I hated it!  The screen and the none normal keypad are enough to make this full laptop lovin' woman crazy!!!

So basically I was down to the essentials - just checking in to make sure I wasn't being fired from any major projects and no patience to post anything to my beloved blog via tiny screen and weird keyboard.  Sorry for that but I am sure you understand. ;)

But I do have some new stuff to share with you.  I got scrappy last weekend.

I love this page.  It looks so much better in real life.  I cut out patterned paper from American Crafts and mounted it on foam squares. Love how this looks.

And here is another page.

Love the tone on tone color of this page.  I repeated the photo on this page since it is a recent fave.

So.  That is it for now.  I leave in approx 8 hours for Grand Rapids with family in tow.  It is the middle of the night as I post this (total insomnia, possibly due to caffenine or maybe excitement, who knows?  LOL) and I really should be in bed but I couldn't resist a post here.  Plus I am waiting on the laundry....gee where is the magic laundry fairy when I need him?

I hopefully will be posting from the showBeth Williams will be there (whom I love) + Staci Etheridge (so funny and full of life) and hopefully I will get post some funnies of us at the show.  But you know how it is...best laid plans and all.

:)

Next week I will be back to more budget scrapping tips (after I sleep off the GASC of course!)

Road Trip Mini Album

Today is a busy day for me.  I am prepping to leave for Grand Rapids, MI later this week to teach at the Great American Scrapbook Convention.  I haven't been to Grand Rapids since I was a kid so I am looking forward to it.  I grew up on the border of the USA and Canada and Grand Rapids is just over an hour away from my home town.  I could have flown but since it is driveable I have decided that a road trip was in order.

And do you know what the best part about deciding to make the journey to the GASC via a road trip?  My kidlets are coming with me! :)  They never get to travel with me when I teach (and they really want to) but this seemed like a perfect opportunity for them to come along (and my wonderful hubby to have some quiet time).  My mom and sister are going to come along to complete our little road trip party and I have a feeling that the car trip is going to be half the adventure!

Since I know that the trip will be filled with many adventures and laughs I decided to create a mini book to record it all.  I used one of the Melissa Frances albums I picked up at the last GASC along with the perfect road trip scrap supplies - the Passport collection by Making Memories.

Here is the cover.

And here is the back.

I prepped the inside but of course it isn't anything much right now since we haven't actually been on the trip, lol.

The album came with cream colored pages so I am using those plus I cut out some from the patterned paper - it is great that they are double sided.  The album binding is large so there is tons of room for extra pages plus the memorabilia I plan to add.

It is really great to have it all ready to go BEFORE the trip.  Maybe this way it won't take me 3 months to finish it, lol.

Everyone around here is pretty excited and we are counting down "sleeps".  Harper is going to be my helper which she has always wanted to be.  My mom and sister both plan to take a class from me. They are not scrapper but they are getting into the whole adventure of it!  I am really excited to meet all the scrappers there and have fun creating and laughing.  Magnus is just excited. :)

Remember this page?

It was from this article.  But that is not what I want to talk about.

What I want to show you is this.

Hee hee.  I was frugal on this page because I love the really bright color on the back of this paper. I cut the paper out from behind the photos like I did here.  It then gave the perfect "scrap" to make a faux ribbon on the page plus some left over for something else.  I hadn't done this for awhile but this paper just called for it!

And want to see what was left over from the Make Scraps - Use Scraps challenge?

Lots of letters still left for many more pages and not much paper left!  Pretty nice to use almost all of if up!

Scrap Envy

Today I am having a bit of scrap envy.  You see, normally I am at the Craft & Hobby show in Chicago at this time of year.  Working and drooling over all the new scrap goodies.  But I opted not to go to this show because it is a busy, busy summer for me and next week I travel to Grand Rapids, MI for the next Great American Scrapbook Convention to teach (Chattanooga - registration is open).  I would have only had 3 days at home between the two show and I choose not to be away from my family that much.

And I am ok with not going 'cause the show is really tiring but you know what I am kind of sad about?  Not seeing people.  Often this show is one of the few times I get to see people I work with almost daily and it is so nice to get to have dinner and chat in the evenings with them.  I am lucky enough to get to work with people I really like - how often do you get to say that?

So I am living vicariously through one of the girls there - she is madly emailing me on her blackberry and I am refreshing my emails. :)  Funny.

So us left at home waiting on sneak peeks of the yummy scrappy-ness to come can continue to scrap on a budget and save our pennies for the stuff we need and stretch it further then normal when we finally treat ourselves - more budget scrapping idea to come. :)

Budget Scrapbooking - Part 2

I have been trying all day to get a chance to post this.  Ahh, finally sitting down. :)

OK.  So if you have a tight budget for scrapbooking then you need to make really plain pages right?  Wrong. (you knew I was going too say that right?)

So today the topic is - Make scraps. Use scraps.

Huh?  Well, let me show you.  (you also knew I was going to say that too didn't you?)

First let me start by telling you when I first started scrapbooking I had an almost zero budget.  And when you have almost no budget for supplies are you are just starting then you have no stash to fall back on.  One time when I was in my local scrapbook store there was a staff member helping a customer and she was explaining how she saved paper.  I, of course, being a newbie and broke eavesdropped. (she didn't mind I promise)  And what I am going to show you (the cutting part) is what she was showing the other customer.  I scrapped like this for a very long time and still do on occasion when I need to stretch a piece of paper.

So lets get started.  Oh.  And let me mention that this is a really, really long post with a million images so go grab a cool drink and put your feet up.  You will thank me. ;)

OK now lets get start.  Again.

I challenged myself to make 5 single page scrapbook pages from 6 pieces of paper.  So I gathered some papers.  Here they are.

(paper info list at the end)

I gathers the slew of photos I printed the other night - most of which have a summer theme that will mix nicely with these papers.  Five of the papers are double sided which by the way is a great way to spend your money if you are on a budget and use them wisely.  One of the papers (darker blue) I only plan to use one side since the back of it is a brown pattern that doesn't coordinate.

First step I choose the striped paper plus the photos I am going to use.

Next, I cut it into a shaped paper making sure to keep the outer scrap in one piece.  Don't know how to make your own shaped paper?  Read this.

Set aside the scrap.  See, we made out first scrap - we will be using it later.

Next decide your photo placement.  (When I scrap I always decide this first since they are the biggest item to be added to the page.  I even stick them down and then work everything else around them.)

So this is my photo placement for the page. (all measurements of photo listed at the end)

Lightly trace around the photo placement with pencil.

Now this is where things get a bit weird but this will seriously stretch your paper.  Cut out the paper inside of the lines (where the photos will cover).  Leave about 1/2" inside the lines (so you can adhere you photos after).  You can use a craft knife or do what I do - use my paper cutter.

I line up the pencil line on the outside of my guide on the cutter (where the arrow is).  I then start and stop my blade where I need to cut.  It is kind of hard to explain but you don't slide your blade all the way from top to bottom - only drop the blade down where you need to cut.  I do this all the way around - inside the shape.  You will get something like this.

Strange looking I know.  And it is probably easier to start with a rectangle then this crazy shape.  :)  You do get really fast at it once you have done it a few time.  Basically you want to save any paper that gets hidden by the photos.  It is totally getting wasted behind there!

Now add back in your photos covering up the "holes".  I tack everything down but the choice is up to you.

The back will look like something like this.

Now there is a weak spot in this particular page - the cross section where all the photos meet.  It causes the photos to "flap" since they are not attached to anything.  To solve this I grab a small of scrap paper and reinforce it - adhere it over this cross section.

I held the page up to the light so you could see how everything overlapped.

Now I will set this page aside.

On to the next page.

I decide on this photo placement.

So I cut this.

Once you get used to cutting out the "wasted" paper behind photos your will probably only need marks like this.

You can tack the photo down now if you want.

Next page. :)

Remember that scrap from the shaped paper I set aside?  I used it on this page.

I am going to use if for a frame on this page.  I mark my photo placement and cut out the inside.

I now have something like this.

This is why I love double sided paper - look at all that new gorgeous color to add the scrap pile!

I adhered the frame to the page with foam squares

I think foam squares are a budget scrappers dream.  Actually a non-budget scrapper dream too.  They are inexpensive but they immediately add interest to everything.  In this case I used them to lift the striped paper which really adds to the framed look.  (I buy them in both the small and regular size so they go further.)

Now you are probably thinking that it will need a lot of foam squares for this look so how is this budget scrapping?  Well look at it this way - you would need to add adhesive to quite a few spots on this page anyway so for a few pennies more you can have lift and instant pop to the page.  If you weigh the cost of adhesive verses the cost of adhesive foam squares then I bet it doesn't add much too the cost.  I am not doing the math though. ;) Can you just take my word for it?

Moving on...

I cut the branding strip off this paper - the pattern is on the back of this strip.  Yay!  More scraps.  I add this to my growing scrap pile. :)

Next, of course, is photo placement.

Mark and cut.

Now I have two papers left.

I plan to use the one that is on top for the main part of this page but I want to mat the photo with the back side of the butterfly paper.  I added this butterfly paper into the paper selection because I knew it would make for great, cheap embellishments for the pages.  Look for patterned papers that will lend themselves to this - for 65-80cents you can get quite a few embellishments with the right paper.

To cut the mat out of the patterned paper I move the photo around so I can maximize the amount of full butterflies that will be left over.

I cut and I get this.

Then I decide photo placement on the remaining paper and cut.  I get this.

So now I get busy with all those little scraps and start decorating the pages.  :)

Note:  I also add into the mix these Heidi Swapp chipboard letters.  As you can see I had already used them but there were still tons to work with.  When buying letter look to buy from companies who understand you need 15 e's!  Heidi Swapp, Basic Grey & American Crafts are three of my faves because they always add in lots of vowels and understand that I only need one or two x's - max!. :)  Also when buying letters lon a budget look for small letters.  Large letters mean that they will be less individual letters per package.  Small letters make more titles. :)

So these are the final pages that I came up with.

Addtional supplies - circle punch + pen + letters (to get the long blue strip I patched together two pieces and hid the seam under one of the circles)

You will see for this last page I subbed in a different alpha (American Crafts).  The shape of the others just didn't work for the look I wanted.

To make the silhouette flower/branches you see in the upper left corner of this page I cut them out from the scrap paper like this.

And then just flipped them.  They made the perfect embellishment that mimicked the design and I didn't have to spend time drawing them. :)

So that is it.  See, inexpensive pages yet they don't look plain and boring.  Well, I don't think they do.  If they do, don't tell me...shhh.  ;)

Pretty good for only 6 papers, some chipboard letters, foam squares and a couple brads.  Now that is working within a budget!

Here are the papers I used.

American Crafts - High Tea

American Crafts - Teacup

American Crafts - Deli

K&CO - Berry Sweet
