Enter to Win a $250 ScanDigital Gift Card!
6/19/2009 9:58:40 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Happy Friday, friends! We have a great giveaway to kick off your weekend!

Like many scrapbookers, you probably have precious family memories—photos, albums, slides, negatives and home movies—just sitting in boxes. These memories, both old and new, are likely the heart of why you scrapbook, but because of their condition or format, aren't being used. This is where ScanDigital, the world's premier photo digitization service, comes to the rescue.

You just send ScanDigital your photos, scrapbooks, scrapbook pages (up to 12x17), slides, negatives and home movies, and ScanDigital provides high-quality scans and provides them to you both in digital format (DVD or CD) and through their online gallery. Using their fully interactive online gallery, you can share your photos with friends and family, upload additional digital images to complete your digital gallery, order reprints, and order other print products (i.e. mugs, key chains, T-shirts) through their print partner Qoop. With ScanDigital, you can preserve, share and enjoy your memories forever.

We at Memory Makers know ScanDigital provides a great user experience, because ScanDigital scanned, color corrected and processed the majority of layouts in our 2009 issues. Our contributors sent requested layouts directly to ScanDigital, and ScanDigital handled the rest. We couldn't have been happier with the process and the results.

Good news! ScanDigital is generously giving a $250 credit to one winner randomly selected electronically. For details and to enter, click here. The contest ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT Thursday, June 25.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,
Beth

Mixed Media Tip From Artist Sarah Ahearn
6/18/2009 5:09:12 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

(images by Sarah Ahearn)

1. stacks of books, 2. remember, 3. little friend., 4. frank.

Did you read the post below? If so, you probably noticed that Sarah's mixed-media artwork is filled with lovely found papers and other vintage ephemera. Want to find some collage goodies of your own?

Here’s what Sarah has to say about hunting for collage elements:

I collect most of my vintage elements from old books I pick up at antique/junk shops or library book sales. At book sales, I scour the kids’ section for old science/nature books, dictionaries, and fun, unique games.

It's a lot of fun to search through my found book collection to find the perfect image to use in a piece. In fact, it has become part of my creative process. I'm sure I have enough books to last a lifetime, but they continue to offer endless inspiration!

Creativity Challenge: Create your own found-object artwork, and share your creations in the Creative Prompts & Challenges section of the forum.

Happy hunting (and crafting)!

Katie

Art Inspiration + Mixed Media Home Decor
6/18/2009 1:16:30 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Have you seen our July/August issue yet?

Artist Sarah Ahearn wrote our Mixed Media column, and it's incredibly inspiring. Check out the mixed media piece I made after editing the article, here. For the column, Sarah created the beautiful artwork above. Today, I'm excited to share that you can purchase the original in Sarah's Etsy shop.

I love shopping for artwork on Etsy. It's a wonderful place to find unique, beautiful and affordable artwork. Take a peek at Sarah's other shop offerings, here. In addition to originals, she sells pretty prints, too.

Do you shop on Etsy? If so, what are your favorite Etsy finds? I'd love to hear about them!

Quick Perfection
6/12/2009 9:42:54 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
I was feeling really nostalgic and wistful earlier this week on the eve of Mei-Lin's second grade graduation, thinking about how quickly time is flying by. I knew I wanted to capture this feeling before it went away, but didn’t want to spend a lot of time since it was late in the evening.

I pulled out a box of archived photos from 2002 (filed in my scrap armoire under "Mei-Lin, 2002"), quickly sifted through a handful of photos and came across a blurred chubby-faced version of my 8 year old. (Who says blurred photos aren’t scrapworthy?!) Perfect!

I grabbed October Afternoon’s Cherry Hill 8x8 paper pad and stickers that were in my "Pending" basket. I'd left them there because I love the patterned papers and hadn't wanted to incorporate them into my paper file folder just yet. But I also hadn't been able to bring myself to use the papers because they’re all just “too pretty” and “I should save them for a mini album.” So, instead, I cut some of the patterned strips from the paper pad cover. Problem solved. Perfect!

Next, I pulled out my favorite go-to letters from Making Memories. Always perfect in my book!

And, finally, rather than agonizing over a design, I scraplifted from one of my favorite simple scrapbookers, Tina Cockburn. Love her style! Perfect!

1 crummy photo + 3 strips of scrapbook packaging + simple embellishments + a scraplift + 25 minutes = an emotion captured perfectly

journaling: Where does the time go?! Love you, girlie * Feeling sentimental on the eve of your 2nd grade graduation * June 8, 2009

supplies:
Adhesive (SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES BY 3L) * Cardstock (Bazzill, Doodlebug) * Letters (Making Memories) * Patterned paper, sticker (October Afternoon) * Pen (Uni-ball)

Weekend challenge: Document something quickly before the feeling slips away. It doesn't have to be perfect to be ... perfect.

Best,
Beth

Craft for Health
6/11/2009 1:01:23 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Do you ever feel a little "off" when you don't get a chance to create? Ever just feel better after scrapbooking even if—or especially if—you've had a lousy day?

It's probably no surprise to you, then, that crafting offers therapeutic benefits and can serve as a way to help people improve their health and feel better. That's the philosophy behind Craft For Health, a blog launched by design & craft expert Kathy Peterson and nurse practitioner & RN Barb Dehn—The Craft Practitioners. They recently joined forces to share empowering anecdotes, inspiring stories and crafty tips about the benefits of crafting. Launched a few months ago, inspiring guest blog entries are pouring in on how crafting has helped people cope with stress, job layoffs, post-partum depression, grief, eating disorders, chemotherapy and more.

If you need a little reminder about the benefits and importance of crafting—and how it can help you through life— check out craftforhealth.typepad.com.

Get inspired by postage stamps
6/3/2009 1:55:13 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

It's a bummer that postage is now 44 cents. Perhaps most people don't care, but for us--those who adore real paper goods--it's a bit annoying.

The upside to the price hike is that the new 44-cent stamps are absolutely adorable! If you have to pay 44 cents, you might as well get some eye candy, right?

In honor of the new stamp, here’s a creative prompt for you: Create a card or layout inspired by the new stamp design. How will the new stamp jump-start your creativity? Share your creations in the forum.

Here’s mine:

Supplies: Patterned paper (K&Company); vinyl letters (American Crafts); tiny letters (Making Memories); rhinestone (Martha Stewart Crafts); Misc: felt flower, brad, photo corners

Happy Wednesday!
Kristin

Download a free summer-themed digi kit
6/1/2009 10:59:14 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

When I stepped outside into the cool air this morning, I was reminded of how much I love quiet summer mornings. And now that it's June (happy June 1!), I'm looking forward to enjoying many quiet mornings this summer.

I decided to document this little favorite on a digital layout. Perhaps I will do this all summer and then print each layout to create a mini-album of summer moments. To create Sweet Summer Mornings, I used elements from our free summer kit, Mrs. C's Confectionery, designed by Lisa Warren. Other supplies used: Photo overlay (Paislee Press), acrylic paint accent (The Artist's Canvas by Angela and Emily Powers)

Click here to download the FREE summer kit.

Enjoy! We'd love to see what you make with the kit. Post your creations, here.

—Katie
