Fabulous Fast, Fresh and Fun Journaling
Thursday, June 04, 2009 9:51:06 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

We're pleased to have author extraordinaire Joanna Campbell Slan share her best advice for beginning and keeping a journaling practice, journaling prompts, and writing inspiration and resources.

Joanna knows what she's talking about, as she's the author of seven technique books on scrapbooking, as well as the Kiki Lowenstein Mystery Series featuring ace scrapbooker Kiki Lowenstein. Paper, Scissors, Death, the first book in the series, was an Agatha Award finalist for Best First Novel. Cut, Crop & Die is the newly released second book in the series.

Today's article is about inspiration. Check back tomorrow for 42 journaling prompts and additional resources!

Get inspired by postage stamps
Wednesday, June 03, 2009 1:55:13 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

It's a bummer that postage is now 44 cents. Perhaps most people don't care, but for us--those who adore real paper goods--it's a bit annoying.

The upside to the price hike is that the new 44-cent stamps are absolutely adorable! If you have to pay 44 cents, you might as well get some eye candy, right?

In honor of the new stamp, here’s a creative prompt for you: Create a card or layout inspired by the new stamp design. How will the new stamp jump-start your creativity? Share your creations in the forum.

Here’s mine:

Supplies: Patterned paper (K&Company); vinyl letters (American Crafts); tiny letters (Making Memories); rhinestone (Martha Stewart Crafts); Misc: felt flower, brad, photo corners

Happy Wednesday!
Kristin

Download a free summer-themed digi kit
Monday, June 01, 2009 10:59:14 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

When I stepped outside into the cool air this morning, I was reminded of how much I love quiet summer mornings. And now that it's June (happy June 1!), I'm looking forward to enjoying many quiet mornings this summer.

I decided to document this little favorite on a digital layout. Perhaps I will do this all summer and then print each layout to create a mini-album of summer moments. To create Sweet Summer Mornings, I used elements from our free summer kit, Mrs. C's Confectionery, designed by Lisa Warren. Other supplies used: Photo overlay (Paislee Press), acrylic paint accent (The Artist's Canvas by Angela and Emily Powers)

Click here to download the FREE summer kit.

Enjoy! We'd love to see what you make with the kit. Post your creations, here.

Journaling Prompts for Spring
Wednesday, May 27, 2009 4:52:55 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Before we ease into June, make a spring layout to document the season. Or make a layout about one of the other seasons.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

•    What is your favorite season? Why?
•    In what season were you born? Do you like that season?
•    What do you love about spring?
•    What drives you crazy about spring?
•    Does your family have any spring traditions?
•    What has been your most memorable springtime?
•    What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of spring?
•    What major life events have occurred during the spring?
•    What springtime fashions are you loving? Not loving?
•    Do you have any favorite spring foods/meals?

(P.S. These prompts were featured in today's newsletter, along with other great tips, tricks and eye candy. If you don't already subscribe, visit our homepage to subscribe and get weekly inspiration delivered to your inbox.)

Create great layouts without any photos
Tuesday, May 26, 2009 2:44:50 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Happy Tuesday, readers! Was your Memorial Day full of fun activities, relaxing and catching some sun? Even if you don’t have any photos to show for it, you can still scrap a meaningful page about the weekend.

The first rule breaker in Cut Loose (by Crystal Jeffrey Rieger) is that a great scrapbook page doesn't always need a title, photo and journaling. Case in point (Crystal's layout from the book):

Supplies: Cardstock, patterned paper (My Mind's Eye, Paper Salon, Sassafras Lass, Scrapbour); chipboard letters (CherryArte, Heidi Swapp); die-cuts (My Mind's Eye); doiles, label (Dollarstore); stamp (Class Act); claim check, clock accent (Paper Valise)

This rule breaker is such relief to me, since I love documenting memories but never seem to have any photos (bad printer + lazy photographer = no photos). So, when I came across this gorgeous layout—sans photos—by crafter and blogger Tara Anderson, I was completely smitten.

This next lovely layout includes an absolutely beautiful photo, but works well without a title. And the photo could easily be swapped for a magazine clipping on a similar layout.

Call them layouts, collages, art journal pages, it doesn’t really matter. These pages record Tara's thoughts in a beautiful, artistic way, which is completely encouraging and inspiring to me. What do you think?

For 29 more scrapping rule breakers, check out Cut Loose. To expand your creative horizons and explore the world of art journaling and collage check out Journal Bliss, Journal Revolution, Taking Flight and The Art of Personal Imagery.

Scrappy Square Collages
Thursday, May 21, 2009 10:55:09 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Our Memory Makers team recently has been experimenting with collage, thanks in large part to the inspiration we’re getting from our Mixed Media columns. Christy, Katie and I have basically bought out all the on-sale 5x5 canvases at our local art supply store just around the corner!

Mei-Lin and I took a little time this weekend to make our own artwork. While she was creating a freehand “M” painting for her room, I took a more analytical approach and happily painted, punched and pasted patterned paper onto canvas. We both liked the result so much that she created her own, too. Hers is the first, and mine is the second, below.

Here’s how I made mine, and Mei-Lin followed the same process:
  1. Paint the edges of the canvas and let dry.
  2. Create 16 paper squares with a 1 1/4-inch square punch.
  3. Apply matte medium to the top of the canvas.
  4. Place the 16 paper squares in the desired patterned, 4 to a row.
  5. Brush over the collage with matte medium and let dry.
supplies: 1 1/4-inch square punch (Creative Memories) • 1 piece textured cardstock (Bazzill) • 15 patterned paper scraps (K & Co.) • Adhesive (Claudine Hellmuth Matte Medium, Ranger) • Paint (Ranger) • Misc.: 5x5 canvas, paintbrush

We're going to hang these in her room, and voila! Simple homemade artwork. We're going to make more with different patterned paper for some friends and as an end-of-school year gift for Mei-Lin's teacher.

Best,
Beth

Totally Rad Actions (Photoshop)
Wednesday, May 20, 2009 11:02:07 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Because I design the magazine, I get to read all the articles before they go to print. In the September/October issue of MM (on sale 8/4), Emily Powers wrote an awesome article on Photoshop actions. Inspired by the article, I visited totallyradactions.com, one of the resources Emily mentions in her article.

For all of you photography enthusiasts, Photoshop actions will save you time, providing you with gorgeous photos that would otherwise take hours of processing. Totally Rad Actions is a bit on the expensive side (from $149), but the product is stellar! And the Web site is full of video tutorials, examples and FAQ's. The only downside is the minimum software requirement is Photoshop CS2. For those of you who don't have this program, don't get discouraged! I found a few sites that have solutions for PS Elements:

ezactions.com
completedigitalphotography.com
ProPhotoHome.com

Here are a few examples of actions (from the free sample downloads on totallyradactions.com):

ORIGINAL

Cool, huh?! In a matter of minutes, I had eight different variations of one photo with minimal effort.

In addition to Emily's article, there are lots of great ideas in the September/October issue, including a special DIY wedding section that's jam-packed with gorgeous photos, design and printing tips, crafty ideas and inspiration for documenting that precious day.

Have a great day!
Christy

Make a Paper Scraps Journal
Friday, May 15, 2009 10:31:14 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

As a scrapbooker, I'm sure it comes as no surprise that I LOVE paper. Lately, I've been especially drawn to vintage papers and discarded papers (like old books, dictionaries and library slips found in thrift stores and flea markets). I've also found a beautiful array of found-paper inspiration on the Web.

(images from Paper is Lovely)

I love the way she photographs her paper collections. (And, of course, I'm especially smitten with the discarded library slips. I'll be headed to library book sales this summer in the hopes that I can build a little collection of my own to use in scrapbooking and mixed media projects.)

(images from Magic Jelly)

How gorgeous is the vintage letter and design book? Oh my, would I love to get my hands on one of those! But I suppose that's going to be a little trickier to find than discarded library slips. :)

Last night, I gathered some of my found papers (like text from an old dictionary, office supply envelops and a little manila book I found at a fun paper store near my hometown) to create a little mini-book.

I plan to use the little book to collect paper scraps, as well as document little bits and pieces of my life like What I'm Loving Now lists, playlists, quotations, etc.

Here's the cover:

I painted the cover of the manila book with gesso and then glued a little office supply envelop to the front.

And here's a little peek at the first page inside (on another little office supply envelop):

I love this definition of the word now I found in an old dictionary. I especially like this part of number 7: "Now the books have arrived, I must stay here and read them."

What have you been creating lately? Do you have any creative ideas for using found papers and scrapbooking paper scraps?

Get to know author Kimber McGray
Thursday, May 14, 2009 11:44:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Scrapbook Secrets author Kimber McGray is with us to share some info about herself and about her new book. Want to meet Kimber in person? She's doing a book signing in the Indianapolis area! (Check out her blog for more info.)

Q+A with Kimber McGray

If you could only use one scrapbooking tool besides scissors and a glue stick, what would it be?
My paper trimmer. I can't cut a straight line with scissors. I can barely cut a straight line with the trimmer.

Do you enjoy other crafts besides scrapbooking?
I have ventured into cardmaking and stamping. It made sense to me to use up a lot of the scraps I have laying around from my layouts. I also like to knit, crochet and do counted crossstitch.

Tell us a secret about yourself.
I organize everything by color in my closet. Also, short sleeves are all together as are long sleeves. So, yes, my scrap supplies are organized by color and by type.

Are your completed layouts organized in albums or stacked in boxes?
Busted! I've been scrapping for four years. I would say I have two years in albums and two years stacked and in a large plastic tub.

What was most exciting about the process of working on a book?
I was most excited to see the “behind the scenes” at the photo shoot. It was neat just to see how that all came together. The least enjoyable was, of course, the paperwork. :)

What do you hope readers will get out of Scrapbook Secrets?
What I hope the readers get out the book is two-fold: learn a new tip or how to use a specific tool and also gain some inspiration from the projects. We worked really hard to make sure the projects in the book spanned all different types of work—simple, clean, fancy; one-page, two-page; 12x12, 8.5x11, cards; etc.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of the Q+A tomorrow.
