FREE mini-file folder template download and project idea
8/19/2008 12:08:43 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

A recent trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee, a TON of photos and lots of great memories inspired me to create a mini-file folder album. The best part is I didn't have to buy a thing! I had everything I needed at home and I designed a template for the mini-file folders.

Step-by-step Instructions

1. Download and cut out template.
2. Trace template on patterned paper or cardstock (I used patterned papers from SEI and solid-colored cardstock). I recommend using thick paper so that your mini-folders hold photos and journaling without being too flimsy.

3. Cut out design and fold where the dotted lines are on the template.
4. Use adhesive to adhere the side flaps and create the folder pocket. I used Tombow Mono Adhesive.

5. Embellish the file folders, leaving room on the edges for binding.
6. Use a hole punch to create holes for binding. I used binder rings so that I can easily add more pages and so the album opens and closes smoothly.

New Product Love
8/18/2008 2:34:19 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Today, we received a box of product samples from American Crafts. My favorite item? The Fla!r button accents. I put together the little collage below to give you a peek at what caught my attention. (Font used: Frutiger—which has become a recent favorite of mine)

What's been catching your eye lately?

Hybrid Card and a Fond Farewell
8/15/2008 10:03:37 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
I made this hybrid card for our oh-so-talented Art Director, Christy. It's her birthday tomorrow, so make sure to wish her happy birthday! I used the Once Upon a Dream kit by Emily Powers and added some dimension with ribbons, a button and chipboard letter on top.

I also wanted to chime in and wish you all a fond farewell! I'm moving back to my hometown to be married in September, so I will no longer be a member of the Memory Makers team. I'm sure I'll be popping up here and there, so keep your eyes open. I have enjoyed my time here and not only working with a fantastic team, but working with many of you! Thanks for making this year so rewarding and fun.

Create something. Inspire everyone.

While You're Waiting ... Style Quiz
8/14/2008 4:04:12 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Hello everyone, I'm just popping in to share a fun style quiz. (And if you're eagerly awaiting information about the Masters contest, I thought you'd appreciate a little distraction!)

The quiz determines your decorating style, but I found that the explanation for my decorating style also is right-on in terms of my scrapbooking style:

My style is certainly "my own." If I like something (in decorating or in scrapbooking), I'll find a way to use it. If you take the quiz, let me know what you learn about your own style. And, let me know if your results say anything about your scrapbooking style.

Enjoy!

MMM Contest Judging Update
8/7/2008 12:35:56 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Hi gang,

I'm truly blessed to have a job that's this much fun! Judging the MMM Contest each year is one of the highlights of my duties. It's exciting to me, as we go through the hundreds of submissions, knowing that among all this great art are 10 amazing artists. And that soon Beth and I will have the honor of asking them to join our MM Team as part of the Class of 2009 MMM!

We love reading all the posts in the forum about how y'all are passing the time until the announcement of winners. We have to announce winners by 8/22/08 but we hate to make everyone wait so long.  If the Fates comply we hope to announce the winners before the 8/22 deadline!

Thanks to all of you who submitted your work to the contest. We understand how brave and daring it is to submit one's passions and projects to critque.

Peace,
  Patty

Using Digital Elements in a Traditional Way
8/7/2008 9:58:02 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

As I was printing off some photos last night at my local grocery store, I realized that for only 29 cents I could print off some digital papers and also add them to my traditional pages. I wrote my journaling on the photograph of some digital paper with a slick writer from American Crafts. I also printed digital paper for the flower embellishment background and the title. Check my supply list below to see where I got these great digi finds. How will you merge your growing digital supplies with your traditional ones?

Supplies: Adhesive (SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES BY 3L) • Digital overlay (Emily Powers, wearestorytellers.com) • Digital patterned papers (Storyteller Essentials v.1 Bundle, WST Artists, wearestorytellers.com; Summer Time Kit, Michelle Coleman, littledreamerdesigns.com) • Epoxy letters (Li'l Davis) • Felt flower and frame, patterned papers (Fancy Pants Designs) • Flower embellishments, pen, vinyl letters (American Crafts) • Letter stickers, journaling spot (Making Memories) • Misc.: brad, corkboard contact paper, flower button

Let the Judging Begin!
8/5/2008 5:13:08 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
We've received hundreds of amazing submissions for the Class of 2009 Memory Makers Masters. We love this time of year—there's such a buzz in the office as we see the boxes arrive and pile up.

The hundreds of boxes have been opened and tomorrow morning the judging begins!! Then before long Beth and I will be calling 10 talented scrappers to say, "You've been chosen to be one of Memory Makers 2009 Masters."  (I LOVE making those calls!)

Come to the forum and tell us what you're doing to pass the time until the 2009 Masters are announced. (Does it involve more scrapping? less scrapping? lots of chocolate? extra miles on the treadmill?)

Wishing y'all a peaceful heart,
  Patty

Multi-photo Layout
8/4/2008 2:43:15 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

My dad RARELY allows anyone to take his picture. He normally puts his hands in front of his face or does something equally frustrating. So, when I snapped these silly pictures at my sister's cotillion, I couldn't wait to scrap them.

Idea: Use a series of photos to tell a story or show someone's personality. The series of photos I used clearly shows my dad's playful nature and his aversion to taking a "normal" photograph.

supplies: Adhesive (Tombow) • Border strips, epoxy stickers, rubber accents (KI Memories) • Letters (American Crafts) • Misc.: acrylic paint, kraft cardstock

Homemade Cork Embellishments
8/1/2008 1:36:11 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I found some fun cork contact paper at Target and knew I had to make something with it. Since it's already self-adhesive, you can draw or trace a shape on the back of the contact paper and then cut it out. I cut out a flower and added a felt flower and fabric brad to the center. I also used the corners of the square and the scrap piece of cork on the inside of the card. I love finding new uses for things that I might already have laying around the house. I'm looking forward to making many more projects with this cork contact paper!

supplies:
Adhesive (Tombow) • Fabric brad (K&Co.) • Patterned paper (Prism, Sandylion, S.E.I) Misc: brad, felt flowers, fiber, metal tag.

Create something. Inspire everyone.

Lots of photos? Here's a time-saving solution for getting your photos scrapped.
8/1/2008 1:00:56 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

... Mini-Albums. I love them! I take a ton of photos during one event, and rather than choosing one to three and create a layout, I can fit a lot into a small album. Combine hybrid scrapping + a mini-album and you get a great time-saving solution for using lots of photos.

Luke and I had our engagement photo session with our photographer at the beginning of June. We had a lot of great photos. I narrowed it down to 12 of my favorite and created this little album to display at our wedding. I also included journaling describing our different personalities and little quirks.

While it's convenient (and tempting) to go out and buy an album, I am on a tight budget these days with only 5 weeks to go until the wedding and house hunt. So I made my own album out of corrugated (cover) and thin cardboard (inside pages) that I had leftover from another project.

Here's the step by step:
1. Find a mini-album template from your favorite digital designer and download it. (I downloaded the Tutti Frutti 4x6 Quick Page Album from We Are Storytellers.) Gather some cardboard or a blank album you already have.

2. Design your album in PhotoShop, PS Elements, or any design program with the digital template you downloaded.

3. Print and trim your pages. (I printed my pages on our Epson R1900 and trimmed them with an Xacto knife).

4. Now is the time to add embellishments to your pages that you don't want sticking through the other side of your cardboard. For example I wanted stitching on my cover, but I didn't want to see the stitching on the other side of the cardboard. So I stitched the cover before I adhered it the cardboard so that it looked seamless. (This would be a good time to add any brads.)

4. Measure and cut out cardboard to match the size of your album. Adhere your designed pages to the cardboard. (My album is 4x6 and I used Tombow Mono Adhesive)

5. Use a hole punch to create holes for binding. Use ribbon, binder rings, or other binding method to finish your album.

6. Add any stamps, embellishments or handwritten journaling to finish the album.

This hybrid album took about half the time it would have taken me if I didn't start with a digital template. Do you have any time-saving tips to share for making mini-albums or multi-photo layouts?

Have a great weekend!
Christy

Who will be the next class of Masters? It could be you! You still have time to enter! All entries must be post-marked by July 31, 2008. (Click here for the official rules.) That leaves about 27 hours to get your entry to the Post Office.

Hybrid Card Take 3
7/29/2008 2:44:43 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I made this hybrid card for my best friend Jen. Since we don't live in the same city, I sent it with a little birthday box I put together for her. The title treatment was inspired by Master '08 Brittany Laakkonen's I Am Striving layout, which appeared in the July/August Techniques section of the magazine.

Supplies: Brads (Bazzill) • Digital patterned paper (FREE Art Nation Blossom Kit by Emily Powers) • Flowers (Making Memories) • Ribbon (KI Memories)
