MMM Contest Judging Update
8/7/2008 12:35:56 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Hi gang, I'm truly blessed to have a job that's this much fun! Judging the MMM Contest each year is one of the highlights of my duties. It's exciting to me, as we go through the hundreds of submissions, knowing that among all this great art are 10 amazing artists. And that soon Beth and I will have the honor of asking them to join our MM Team as part of the Class of 2009 MMM! We love reading all the posts in the forum about how y'all are passing the time until the announcement of winners. We have to announce winners by 8/22/08 but we hate to make everyone wait so long. If the Fates comply we hope to announce the winners before the 8/22 deadline! Thanks to all of you who submitted your work to the contest. We understand how brave and daring it is to submit one's passions and projects to critque. Peace, Patty

Using Digital Elements in a Traditional Way
8/7/2008 9:58:02 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) As I was printing off some photos last night at my local grocery store, I realized that for only 29 cents I could print off some digital papers and also add them to my traditional pages. I wrote my journaling on the photograph of some digital paper with a slick writer from American Crafts. I also printed digital paper for the flower embellishment background and the title. Check my supply list below to see where I got these great digi finds. How will you merge your growing digital supplies with your traditional ones?
Supplies: Adhesive (SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES BY 3L) • Digital overlay (Emily Powers, wearestorytellers.com) • Digital patterned papers (Storyteller Essentials v.1 Bundle, WST Artists, wearestorytellers.com; Summer Time Kit, Michelle Coleman, littledreamerdesigns.com) • Epoxy letters (Li'l Davis) • Felt flower and frame, patterned papers (Fancy Pants Designs) • Flower embellishments, pen, vinyl letters (American Crafts) • Letter stickers, journaling spot (Making Memories) • Misc.: brad, corkboard contact paper, flower button Create something. Let the Judging Begin!
8/5/2008 5:13:08 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) We've received hundreds of amazing submissions for the Class of 2009 Memory Makers Masters. We love this time of year—there's such a buzz in the office as we see the boxes arrive and pile up. The hundreds of boxes have been opened and tomorrow morning the judging begins!! Then before long Beth and I will be calling 10 talented scrappers to say, "You've been chosen to be one of Memory Makers 2009 Masters." (I LOVE making those calls!) Come to the forum and tell us what you're doing to pass the time until the 2009 Masters are announced. (Does it involve more scrapping? less scrapping? lots of chocolate? extra miles on the treadmill?) Wishing y'all a peaceful heart, Patty

Multi-photo Layout
8/4/2008 2:43:15 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) My dad RARELY allows anyone to take his picture. He normally puts his hands in front of his face or does something equally frustrating. So, when I snapped these silly pictures at my sister's cotillion, I couldn't wait to scrap them.
Idea: Use a series of photos to tell a story or show someone's personality. The series of photos I used clearly shows my dad's playful nature and his aversion to taking a "normal" photograph.
supplies: Adhesive (Tombow) • Border strips, epoxy stickers, rubber accents (KI Memories) • Letters (American Crafts) • Misc.: acrylic paint, kraft cardstock

Homemade Cork Embellishments
8/1/2008 1:36:11 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I found some fun cork contact paper at Target and knew I had to make something with it. Since it's already self-adhesive, you can draw or trace a shape on the back of the contact paper and then cut it out. I cut out a flower and added a felt flower and fabric brad to the center. I also used the corners of the square and the scrap piece of cork on the inside of the card. I love finding new uses for things that I might already have laying around the house. I'm looking forward to making many more projects with this cork contact paper!
supplies: Adhesive (Tombow) • Fabric brad (K&Co.) • Patterned paper (Prism, Sandylion, S.E.I) Misc: brad, felt flowers, fiber, metal tag. Create something. Inspire everyone. GinaMarie cardmaking | techniques

Lots of photos? Here's a time-saving solution for getting your photos scrapped.
8/1/2008 1:00:56 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) ... Mini-Albums. I love them! I take a ton of photos during one event, and rather than choosing one to three and create a layout, I can fit a lot into a small album. Combine hybrid scrapping + a mini-album and you get a great time-saving solution for using lots of photos. Luke and I had our engagement photo session with our photographer at the beginning of June. We had a lot of great photos. I narrowed it down to 12 of my favorite and created this little album to display at our wedding. I also included journaling describing our different personalities and little quirks. While it's convenient (and tempting) to go out and buy an album, I am on a tight budget these days with only 5 weeks to go until the wedding and house hunt. So I made my own album out of corrugated (cover) and thin cardboard (inside pages) that I had leftover from another project. Here's the step by step: 1. Find a mini-album template from your favorite digital designer and download it. (I downloaded the Tutti Frutti 4x6 Quick Page Album from We Are Storytellers.) Gather some cardboard or a blank album you already have. 2. Design your album in PhotoShop, PS Elements, or any design program with the digital template you downloaded. 3. Print and trim your pages. (I printed my pages on our Epson R1900 and trimmed them with an Xacto knife). 4. Now is the time to add embellishments to your pages that you don't want sticking through the other side of your cardboard. For example I wanted stitching on my cover, but I didn't want to see the stitching on the other side of the cardboard. So I stitched the cover before I adhered it the cardboard so that it looked seamless. (This would be a good time to add any brads.) 4. Measure and cut out cardboard to match the size of your album. Adhere your designed pages to the cardboard. (My album is 4x6 and I used Tombow Mono Adhesive) 5. Use a hole punch to create holes for binding. Use ribbon, binder rings, or other binding method to finish your album. 6. Add any stamps, embellishments or handwritten journaling to finish the album. This hybrid album took about half the time it would have taken me if I didn't start with a digital template. Do you have any time-saving tips to share for making mini-albums or multi-photo layouts? Have a great weekend! Christy Digital Scrapbooking | gift ideas | hybrid scrapbooking | mini-albums

Hybrid Card Take 3
7/29/2008 2:44:43 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I made this hybrid card for my best friend Jen. Since we don't live in the same city, I sent it with a little birthday box I put together for her. The title treatment was inspired by Master '08 Brittany Laakkonen's I Am Striving layout, which appeared in the July/August Techniques section of the magazine. Spice Up Your Home Decor
7/25/2008 9:33:47 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I had a vase lying around my apartment that had simple contemporary lines. I was in the creative mood last night, so I sat down, grabbed some foam stamps and bright turquoise paint and began to play. I used a modern Damask foam stamp from Making Memories and stamped one of the designs on top and one of the bottom to create a diamond shape. I then took my paint brush and distressed the contemporary edges with paint. I added a few gems from Hero Art and voila! A new vase with a lot more color and pizzazz was born. The whole project probably took me about ten minutes. Find something around your house and think of the ways you can use your crafts supplies to personalize it to your style. Hope you have a fun this weekend recreating something in your home!

Another Easy Hybrid Card
7/24/2008 10:51:48 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Following Christy's hybrid-lead, I created a hybrid graduation card for one of my friends back home. I simply used a page from Emily Merrit's, Once Upon a Dream Album collection as my base. Then I added a few digital touches like the tree, the frame around the word big, and the congrats letters. (For more information about the digital elements, see the supply list below.) I made the entire thing smaller than it's original size, since I was making a card and not a mini-album page, and then I printed it out. I cut it out and mounted it on cardstock and added the letters stickers for her name and the word big and a few flowers in the center for added dimension. It was quick and easy, and I really enjoy merging my new love for digital design, with my traditional love for dimension and texture. What will be your next hybrid creation? Create something. Inspire everyone. GinaMarie Supplies: Alpha (Art Nation Kit, Emily Powers, Free download, here.) • Once Upon a Dream Album, digital tree, funky frame (Emily Merritt, wearestorytellers.com) • Flowers (American Crafts) • Letter stickers, patterned paper (StoryTellers) • Misc.: brad cardmaking | hybrid scrapbooking

Digital + Paper + Paint = Cute Card
7/23/2008 12:19:53 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) My first ever hybrid card. I must say that I am pretty excited about how it turned out. I have been experimenting more with digital and paint lately, and this project was a great way to bring the two together. You can create something similar by following these simple steps:
1. Cut out a template from a neutral piece of cardstock. (My
template is a 5x10-inch rectangle. When it's folded, the final size is
a 5x5 inch square.)
2. Find a digital piece of paper that you love and print it. (I printed
a design by Tiff Brady at We Are StoryTellers.) If you
don't have any digital elements, find a piece of patterned paper and use that
instead.
3. Cut out your paper design and glue it on your template.
4. Find embellishments that complement the paper’s design and adhere
them to the card. (I used felt and paper flowers, a brad and white ribbon.)
5. Choose paint colors that complement your card’s colors. Take a small
paint brush or sponge, and paint around the sides of your card, or around
the main design on your card. (I used red acrylic paint and several shades of green to
paint around the flowers to draw attention to them.)
6. I cut a strip off the front of the card with scalloped shears to add a
decorative edge to the card and to reveal a portion of the inside of the
card (a great place to hand write something!).
7. Let the paint dry before you decorate the inside of the card.
8. Finally, add any photos, embellishments and paint to the inside of the card.
(I used a little card that I got from Moo.com, painted around its edges with
the same paint colors I used on the front of the card, and then added little
Pearls.)
Add your sentiment and a stamp and mail it to someone you really care about.
Trust me, they will never throw this card away :) Oh, and here are some fun photos from my bridal shower. I have to tell you that my fabulous sister made the cupcakes. Aren't they gorgeous and so professional looking?) I can't wait to add all my photos to the album I made.
Have a great day! christy cardmaking | Digital Scrapbooking | hybrid scrapbooking | techniques

All you need to know about CHA trends! :)
7/22/2008 9:28:33 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Hi y’all! No, I’m not lost. I’m posting over here for a reason! One, I’m moving into a contributing editor role! Woooo Hooooo! :) Two, I’m sharing the goods from CHA…what’s hot, what’s cool, and what I loved! :) Ooooh, that got your heart racin’ a bit, didn’t it? Of course it did! We’re scrappers and shopping for scrap stuff is in our blood!
So, you want to know what you’re going to be blowing your scrapbook budget on over the next few months? Yeah, I thought so! Just remember, you heard it here first! ;)
TREND SPOT #1: School Lines – The best part of the primary color scheme that made up most of these lines is…(drumroll please)…the mix it up possibilities! :) You’ll have lots of choices, but here’s my top 3 faves… * KI Memories School Days – Love that the always a must-have skinny stripe is there plus lots of usable patterns. Add in new glitter lace cardstock designs and Sheer Delights, and I can’t wait to get my hands on these goodies! * Scenic Route Appleton – This line has a fun hand-drawn look, from alphas to rulers to wheel-cog shapes. * Die Cuts with a View – I stopped cold in my tracks when I saw this line! It has an *adorable* patterned apple paper that I wanted to sit down in the floor & start chopping to bits right there! Also has a paper with a wise owl perched in a tree. Did I mention the apples? Yeah baby! :)

TREND SPOT #2: Earth Friendly – Many companies are responding to the push towards ecologically responsible living, even in our hobbies. And the best part…they are doing it with style! * A few companies that are showcasing recycled papers, some even printed with soy-based inks: Piggy Tales, Anna Griffin Sierra collection, Tinkering Ink Becoming Green, Sonburn Designs eco-chic, Amy Butler Lotus and Re*Make
TREND SPOT #3: Halloween – The key color you must know for fall (and therefore Halloween) is…purple. It’s all over the fashion mags as the “it” color and CHA was the same story. Some faves to check out: * K & Company Halloween Whimsy is perfect for kid-projects with cute cartoon character drawings! * Heidi Grace collection has a softer purple color added and some spooky clear eye stickers that are perfect for bringing ghosts, pumpkins, etc to life. * Lil Davis web diecut cardstock * Polka-dot filled witch silhouettes at Rusty Pickle (paper) and Making Memories (stamp) * Pink Paislee Vintage Moon has a totally different color story, which makes it usable for all your fall layouts. Besides, the collection is headlined by a cutie owl who looks like he’s wearing a lil sweater vest!! How squeal-worthy is that? :)
TREND SPOT #4: Christmas – For those of you making your Christmas plans early…pffft on you! LOL Totally kidding! You go for it with your early Christmas self…just promise to send me a card! :) * I talked to a lot of folks, and continually asked “What’s your favorite Christmas line?” and the answer was always the same…Fancy Pants Happy Holidays. The FP line’s distressing gives the papers so much depth that it stood out in the sea of red/green/pink collections. * For you non-traditional girls…first, come sit by me! Why, you ask? Because I’m about to rock your Christmas season! Glitz Designs Kringle line had the traditional red/white (of course) mixed with…wait for it…yellow and black! Aaaaaaahh…did you hear the angels singing? I sure did! With cute iconography, like a fat Santa, beautiful trees, and more, it’s a fully Christmas line but with a fun twist to shake up your holidays!

TREND SPOT #5: Cupcakes! Can I start with a big ol’ Yummmm? There was cupcake cuteness of every variety (paper, embellishments, stamps, etc) throughout CHA, but my hands-down fave was… * Colorbok. So full of bright colors that I wanted some sugar sprinkles! :) And the embellishment packs are packaged so ridiculously cute, it made me want to collect every “flavor”. * But maybe you want to play along with the cupcake trend, but have papers in mind…then you need some Maya Road! With cupcake albums, chipboard sets, and stamps, they can fill you up with no calories! ;)
TREND SPOT #6: Aliens, Monster, and more…oh my! It’s a big ol’ boy parade of fun with these characters everywhere! * Prima had a cute Spaceboy line featuring some cute little aliens, especially the stickers! * And my favorite monster line…October Afternoon Night Light!! OA mixed the gotta-have-it cuteness of monsters with a line fleshed out with a variety of usable patterns.

TREND SPOT #6: Die cut papers – It seemed like almost every single booth had diecut papers, both patterned and cardstock solids. A few that stuck out of the crowd were: * TaDa Creative Studios offered detailed lasercut patterns in your choice of cardstock colors. * Scalloped + dots equals a great diecut cardstock at Crate Paper * Little Yellow Bicycle had a great selection of themed diecut cardstock to go with each of their lines. My fave was the orange open-dottie from the Halloween line.

TREND SPOT #7: Glitter! Unless you were there in person, you truly cannot comprehend the sheer volume of glitter present! There was glitter on paper, on embellishments, loose, and more! If you like a little bling in your scrappin’ life, check out… * Pink Paislee Pixee Stix combine the fun of glitter with a cute package that actually makes “sprinkling” easy. * Fancy Pants has Glitter Cuts…transparency elements jumped up a level with the addition of glitter.

TREND SPOT #8: Red + Turquoise = HOT! This continues to be a super-hot color combo, something I’m excited about since it’s a personal fave! ;) Most lines were adding in a 3rd color to the mix, usually either yellow or green. * Cosmo Cricket Jack’s World mixes red/turquoise/yellow/green for a fun boy line with everything from polka dots to sunshines to monkeys holding hands! Makes me smile! :) * Dream Street Papers Mod Posy has a more rustic version of the red & turquoise colors with some cute vintage vibe flowers that I want to chop to bits! · Mix it up options for red/turquoise from Chatterbox because their Together collection follows the color line (and has some great fabric stickers) and/or you can pick and choose from their artsy.licious collections that have color family sets in both red and turquoise.

TREND SPOT #9: Fabric Inspired. Whether paper designed to truly have a fabric look or paper that just looks like grandma’s tablecloth patterns, there was definite fabric touches to be found! * K & Company’s Amy Butler of course has the fabric vibe all sewed up with 2 great new collections. * Tinkering Ink debuted some very cool fabric sticker strips that you tear apart from the perforated sheet and can then shape them into pleats, flowers, and more. * Jenni Bowlin Studio had a new line that was so pretty, it reminded me of vintage tablecloths or maybe sheets. So soft looking that I wanted to touch it to see if it was really paper.

TREND SPOT #10: Do Your Own Thing. There are always some folks that have stuff so unique that you realize you’re looking at a trend as its starting…before anyone else really has it. Some that stuck out for me… * Bikes and tire designs were obviously different and cool at both Hambly Screenprints and Glitz Designs. I can’t wait to use them on layouts! * Sassafras Lass whole release made me giggle like a little girl, with rainbows, mushrooms, and all varieties of animal friends. Their 70’s-80’s child vibe speaks to me (not revealing my age too much with that!) and I wanted to just sit on the floor in their booth and chill. :) * Moustache rub-ons to joke on your family pics made me smile. Found them at Hambly Screenprints and Colorbok.

Well, there you have it. A list of 10 HOT trends that I saw at CHA! Some may totally rock your world, others may leave you scratching your head. But that’s the point. A little something for everyone is what makes this world go round. Now, go forth and use this CHA inspiration to create your daily masterpiece! :) And THANKS for letting me sneak over here to the editor's blog! I'll see ya again here, but in the meantime, I'm still on the MMMaster blog! XOXO…Staci
