First Day of CHA!
Sunday, February 10, 2008 6:59:23 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
There's no doubt about it. If you're a crafter, than CHA is a little taste of heaven on earth, and the weather is absolutely gorgeous! I know you really don't careCHA_Sign.jpg what the weather's like, you just want to see what's inside the doors of CHA. I will be sharing with you the top trends, products and tools that I see throughout the show, so continue to check in daily to see all of the cool stuff!

Our first picture is outside of the Anaheim Convention Center, because I mainly just wanted to show you the beautiful palm trees.

Our first stop this morning was walking the New Exhibitor's floor, and I took pictures to show you what all the CHA newbies were showing off in their displays.

Graphic 45graphic45b.jpggraphic45.jpg
Elegant with a touch of shabby chic, their designs and booth were gorgeous. Check out this baby carriage adorned with their Baby 2 Bride collection. This lamp was one of my favorites, because it would be so easy to create customized shades to fit your decor.

Molly West Handbound BooksMollyWest_SchoolDaze.jpgMollyWest.jpg

The fabric-bound School Days book would help any busy Mom keep a detailed memoir of her child's school life from kindergarten through 8th grade. I also took a picture of a brag book, which comes in many different designs and sizes. The fabrics were stunning and had a lot of neat details.

Glue
Glue_dis.jpgGlue_jewelry.jpg
They sell raw materials that you can cover and alter to create awesome home decor projects or gifts. They had unique things to alter, like a necklace stand to and organize your jewels.

Jenni Bowlin

Many might already be familiar with some of her stuff, but this was her first appearance at CHA. I fell in love with many of her things. The papers are from her Tangerine Dream Collection. I also wanted you to see the Journaling Cards that coordinate with the different collections and adorable Printed Tickets. Her booth was booming, and there's no doubt in my mind why it was popular.

Paper Trunk

This booth was also crammed with people so I brought the samples back to my room so I could take a picture of their fun and bright designs. Graphic patterns and bright colors can be seen all over CHA.

I just wanted to share a few of our favorites from the day, but I'd like to know what you think about them, too. Check out the Favorite New Product thread started by 2008 Master, Tracy Austin, and let us know what's your favorite CHA product? Keep checking in as I walk to floor and let you know what your favorite companies are coming out with next!

Create something. Inspire everyone.

Waiting for "Kickoff"
Sunday, February 10, 2008 9:04:23 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Hi. GinaMarie and I arrived safely in Anaheim yesterday, and it was invigorating to feel spring-like breezes and see bright green grass. Ahhh! We rode to the hotel with the window down, basking in the breeze and sunshine. Just a bit of a change from our cold, bleary Cincinnati weather.

It's now Sunday, 6 a.m. in Anaheim, and I'm excitedly looking forward to CHA "kickoff" at 9 a.m. I can't believe I'm actually here; one year ago, I began the interview process for this most amazing of jobs, and I remember wishing I was already on the Memory Makers team so I could attend CHA. It's the SuperBowl of the scrapbooking industry, and I can't believe I'm now actually here. (Guess I already said that, but it's true! I feel like a kid in a candy store, or Eli Manning after his SuperBowl win.)

Well, I guess I better go "suit up" and get ready for the big game!

GinaMarie will be blogging later today/tonight to share some of the product and trends she's observed on the showroom floor, and I hope to pop back in too.

Have a great day!

Best,
Beth

Save Memories & Trees
Friday, February 08, 2008 2:06:09 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
As Beth and GinaMarie prepare to fly to CHA, here's a news release I received that made my world-peace lovin' heart happy. Wishing you peace & love. Patty

Piggy Tales’ entire collection now made entirely of recycled paper

Piggy Tales, a family-owned and operated international scrapbooking company, is the first major scrapbooking manufacturer to print its entire collection of scrapbook paper on certified recycled paper.  The company will roll out its new product at the upcoming Craft & Hobby Association’s Winter Convention and Trade Show in Anaheim, CA on February 10-13.

“For an industry that is made up of more than 70 percent paper products, going ‘green’ with our paper seemed like a logical and responsible step,” said Debbie Juden, CEO of Piggy Tales.  “We want to do our part to preserve our natural resources, and we want to be able to give scrapbookers the means to do the same. Scrapbookers are naturally passionate about saving memories; now we are giving them the chance to save the environment as well. It’s just one more reason to feel good about scrapbooking.”

Many paper companies shy away from recycled paper because it can be difficult to maintain the vibrant colors and creative designs that are trademarks of popular scrapbook paper collections, but owners of Piggy Tales say it’s worth the challenge.

“In our industry, changing the paper can be a risky proposition because it’s not just an office supply staple for us,” said Debbie Juden, “it represents the majority of our annual sales. We wouldn’t have taken this step toward recycled materials if we weren’t 100 percent confident that our paper would still have the sharp designs and great color collections that our customers have come to expect from Piggy Tales.”

In addition to using recycled paper, Piggy Tales’ paper is lignen and acid free and is printed with soy ink rather than the standard petroleum-based inks. Soy ink contains non-toxic soybean oil and is not only more environmentally friendly, but also makes it easier to recycle the paper.

“We estimate that converting our entire paper supply to recycled paper will save more than 100 trees in a year,” said Ryann Juden.  “There are more than 25 million people in the US alone that call themselves scrapbookers; if we can encourage even a fraction of them to use recycled products, we can all make a huge impact on the total number of trees used in paper production.”

Adjusting the Levels of Your Photos
Thursday, February 07, 2008 2:04:44 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
candles_orig_Web.jpgI’m a simple kind of girl. If there’s any easy way to do something, I want to know about it. If you’ve played with your photos in Photoshop Elements, you may be aware that the Auto Smart Fix option under the Enhance menu can definitely be your friend. In fact, all of the auto-adjustment buttons can help transform a drab picture.

Here are some pictures I’ve taken for the 30-day photo challenge. I took a picture of the candles on the windowsill of my bathroom because I love the bright, vivid teal color of the candleholders. Unfortunately, as you can see in the original picture on the right, the colors aren’t as vivid as they were in real life. In this case, I simply opened the photo in Photoshop Elements and used the Auto Smart Fix button. Viola! Perfection at the click of a button!candles_smartfix_Web.jpg

I tried to do the same thing with the photo of my favorite soap, but the colors didn’t change enough by only using the Auto Smart Fix. I adjusted the levels manually to give this picture an easy fix.

Adjusting the Levels in Photoshop Elements:
  1. Click on the Enhance menu>Adjust lighting>Levels
  2. Click on the white eyedropper in the bottom right of the Levels menu.
  3. Using the eyedropper, click on the whitest part of your picture. Depending on where you click the brightness should automatically adjust to your selection. Sometimes you need to keep clicking in order to achieve the lightness you want.
  4. Now click on the black eyedropper in the Levels menu and click the darkest part of the photo.
  5. If you still feel like the photo is too dark or light, move the white and blaclevels_Web.jpgk buttons on the input levels until you’re satisfied.
  6. You can always hit the reset button and start the process over again. Sometimes, it takes me a few times to get the effect I want.
As you can see below, there’s a huge difference between the original and the photo I adjusted.

Was this tip helpful? Let me know by posting a comment in the forum. If you have other photography questions, post them in the new photography section of our forum. Your question could even become the topic of an upcoming blog! For other photo tips check out MM Books Associate Editor Kristin Boys' photos with a romantic glow, MM Associate Editor Katie Hilbert's black and white photos and my black and white photos with a punch of color.

California, Here We Come ...
Wednesday, February 06, 2008 10:11:30 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
GinaMarie and I are getting excited about heading out to CHA's (Craft and Hobby Association) winter show in Anaheim on Saturday. I even got a new suitcase for the event. (I have to justify my spur-of-the-moment Pier I purchase somehow!)

We'll be blogging from the show, sharing the latest must-have cool products; getting together with the 2007 and 2008 Masters for a Sunday night dinner; and hanging out at our company's booth (#1751) Sunday, Monday and Tuesday afternoons. Plus, several of our Masters will be doing make & takes at our booth, so stop by if you're at CHA! We'd all love to meet you! Christine, Crystal and I are also teaching a class on adding dimension and texture to pages. Lots going on and lots to look forward to!

Be sure to check out our CHA forum to see what some of our readers are saying about sneak peeks from the show! And, add your own!

Best,
Beth

How well do you know your MM editors?
Tuesday, February 05, 2008 12:56:54 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Your MM team met this morning to do what some editorial teams call a postmortem on the March/April issue (which goes on sale 2/19, subscribers will be receiving soon). We don't like that word because we're not trying to discover why the issue failed or died, but rather to acknowledge what we felt we did well and to look for ways to improve the next issue.

March/April 2008             February 2008

I love this process of flipping through the magazine as a team and just saying what worked and what could have been better. Not everyone on the team gets to see all the articles before an issue goes to print, as some editors only work on certain columns. It's rewarding to take the time to look at the finished product together and to realize how getting that issue to print is a joint effort among us and so many others: YOU (our readers and contributors), photographers, production specialists, printers, the post office.

When you get your March/April issue (or if you want to talk about the February issue), email me at editorial@memorymakersmagazine.com. Include the word Feedback in your subject line, and then tell me what you thought we did well AND/OR what we could improve upon next time.

We also talked about what we do as writers and designers to keep our creative juices flowing. Here are the responses from the team. Can you guess who said what? Come to the forum and post your guesses. I'll check back into the forum on Friday to reveal who said what!
            Beth, executive editor
                Patty, managing editor
                    Christy, art director
                        Katie, associate editor
                            GinaMarie, assistant editor

a) bought new music from iTunes including artists Yael Naïm and Deb Talan
b) went shopping at Jungle Jim's international food section for ingredients to make sushi at home
c) wrote for her personal blog with creative abandon
d) bought a book at Half Price Books called Cath Kidston's Brilliant Ideas for Using Vintage Fabrics in Your Home
e) subscribed to Real Simple

Wishing you and yours peace and love, Patty

Black & White Photography
Monday, February 04, 2008 1:36:47 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

I'm back with a few more photos to share.

On Saturday, I played around a bit with the black and white mode on my camera.

(Can you tell that my cat Mia is a diva and isn't camera shy?)

To keep my camera steady, I set it on the bed (where Mia was sprawled out, enjoying the afternoon sunshine). Later, I softened the images using these Photoshop tricks from MM Books Associate Editor Kristin Boys.

For more on black and white photography, click here to try a black and white technique from Assistant Editor GinaMarie Reda.

Share your own favorite black and white snapshots, here.

And don't forget to spend some time in our NEW photography forum. Post your burning photography questions. Discuss cameras, equipment and photo-editing software. Or, share some of your latest snapshots.

Happy picture-taking,

Katie

Get Inspired: Valentine's Day Cards
Monday, February 04, 2008 11:31:10 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

At our recent brainstorming session, the MM team did a little card crafting. On this gloomy Monday morning, I'm here to share a few fun photos:

Here's Assistant Editor GinaMarie Reda showing off one of her cute card creations. (Note the Starbucks cup to the left of the photo. GinaMarie and I made a Starbucks stop on the way to our brainstorm session because, let's face it, brainstorming and crafting aren't complete without a latte (in my case) or a chai (in GM's case).

I made this card for my sister, using cardstock and Cosmo Cricket's "Hey Sugar" line. I liked the playful "For Your Eyes Only" sticker. I felt it was perfect for a card for my fun-loving little sister.

I love the glittery flowers Art Director Christy Miller added to this sweet card.

Here's a peek at one of Managing Editor Patty Craft's cards. Can you see the pearl accents? Patty's our resident "bling" lover. I love how she placed the delicate pearl accents in the centers of a few flowers.

Executive Editor Beth Williams is an amazingly quick crafter. As I tinkered with one card, she was able to make multiple incredibly cute creations! I love the sweet simplicity of her "Me + You" card.

Get more inspiration for Valentine's Day cards here, here, here and here.

Are you working on any Valentine's Day-inspired projects? Share your own creations in the forum.

Wishing you a lovely day,

Katie

Tell Me More ...
Friday, February 01, 2008 12:00:43 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

Greetings from the home office, and happy Friday!

Earlier this week we asked you if you felt your interests were being served in the pages of MM and online. We got some great responses in the forum and I want to share a couple here.

submitted by kelleyisland: After reading Patty's post, it got me to thinking about my own situation...active grandmother with three grandchildren. Most of my scrapbooking focuses on my grandchildren, which gives me infinite pleasure, and MM is full of inspiration in that category, but I think I'm going to start doing more about myself and my husband. So, MM, here's another demographic you might want to think about...Empty Nesters.

submitted by coffeeaddict: There is a slowly-growing trend towards encouraging scrapbookers to do LO's of themselves and I think it's refreshing! We all wear so many hats in our lives, and every one is worthy of some attention in our layouts. Whether spouses or children ever come into the equation, someone, someday will be intrigued by how we lived and what we were like. I'd hate for my children or grandchildren to look back at my work and not see what a full, fun, challenging and satisfying life I really had, beyond being a mom.

We'd still like to hear from more of you. Come to the forum and tell us what you love about the magazine, or what's missing that would make your scrapbooking time more meaningful.

Peace and love,
 Patty

Join Us and Oprah!
Thursday, January 31, 2008 3:26:14 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Last week your MM editors met and brainstormed fresh and fun ideas to keep you inspired. We can’t tell you all the details yet, but watch for more online opportunities coming soon.

And if you’re not already signed up for our weekly e-newsletter, click here to register. Next week we want your opinion about a new online opportunity that’s designed just for you! And you won't be able to participate in the survey if you're not signed up for the e-news.

Speaking of inspiration, our team is excited to join Oprah’s Book Club in reading A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle. Part of what we talked about last week is staying true to the MM purpose to create a community of ideas and inspiration, and we think this opportunity has arrived at exactly the right moment. Serendipity in action!

Join us—and yeah, Oprah, too—in this online class opportunity to realize your full potential. Come to the forum where we’ll be talking about the book.

Peace and love,
Patty, Beth, Christy, GinaMarie and Katie

Tips for Using the New Wild Sorbet Kit
Thursday, January 31, 2008 12:17:51 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Angelas_LO_Web.jpgHave you downloaded the new FREE Wild Sorbet kit by Michelle Coleman? If not, you can download it here. I’ve had so much fun playing with this kit because the beautiful, bright colors remind me of spring, which I hope will be here in a month … or two … or possibly three, since I do live in Ohio.

I kept things pretty simple because I didn’t want to take away from the gorgeous background paper. I also wanted to showcase my sister’s pictures without a lot of distraction.

I created the white flowers and notebook paper in Photoshop Elements using parts of the Wild Sorbet kit. See below for how-to instructions.

White Flowers:
  1. To create the white flowers, open the background paper and use your magic wand tool to select one of the flowers.
  2. Hit the move button and move the flower onto the layout as a separate layer.
  3. Select the layer and go to Enhance>Adjust color>Adjust hue saturation.
  4. Hit the colorize button and take away the color making the flower white.
  5. To make the flower stand out, I duplicated the flower bud layer so it appeared heavier on the page.
  6. Use a thin brush to draw the lines of the stems.

Notebook paper:
  1. Open a coordinating background paper from the kit.
  2. Choose a small section and move it onto the layout as a new layer.
  3. Select the eraser tool and choose the block eraser.
  4. Erase blocks on the paper in a straight line down the edge.
  5. Make the block eraser brush smaller and erase a line from the edge of the paper to the erased hole to make it look like notebook paper has been torn from a pad of paper.

What have you done with your FREE Wild Sorbet kit? Post your layouts in the forum here, and get great ideas from other scrapbookers!

Create something. Inspire everyone.

What Do Your Purse "Guts" Say About You?
Wednesday, January 30, 2008 2:23:55 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
As I was lugging a big bottle of spring water in my purse this afternoon, I got to wondering what other women carry around in their purse and what it says about them.

So, I decided to do a quick purse dump to see what the "guts" reveal about me. I'll show you mine if you show me yours!

Band-Aids? Check (tucked into wallet pocket).
Advil? Check (in little black and white case).
Phone charged? Check (charging next to the purse dump out of view).
Swiss Army knife? Check (attached to my key ring).
Gum? Check (and a little overboard at that, as I opened an 8-pack and placed them all in my purse).
Slight obsession with black and white? Um, well, yes.

Except for the chip clip (left over from last week's Memory Makers' brainstorming session/food fest), the blob of green gum in cellophane (front left, from Mei-Lin, who considers me her personal garbage collector) and a few stray quarters, my purse reflects that I'm streamlined, buttoned-up, organized (OK, I'll just say it — anal) and ready for just about anything. I could save the world with the contents in my purse! I think I may make a layout about this.

Now that I've shown you mine, show me yours! I'm curious to see what you're carrying around ... and what you think it reveals about you!

Best,
Beth
