Altered Mini-Album
10/5/2007 1:04:32 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
In the past, I have only been a very traditional scrapbooker, mainly using a 12x12 page and placing them in an album when I’m done. This next project I’m working on is helping me break out of the mold. I’m doing a mini-album for an upcoming road trip I’m taking to Louisiana. Katie and I stumbled on these wire-bound conference pamphlets from How Design, one of our sister publications. I’m planning to alter this pamphlet into a mini-album that I can use on my trip to record and collect tidbits from here and there. When I get home, I can add photos and other embellishments to the album.

I have already worked on the front cover as you can see, and have begun to prep the pages by gluing together several pages and adding cardstock to give them strength. I also glued cardboard on the front and back cover to add sturdiness. I will be using gesso (used by painters to prep the canvas before painting) to give the pages a stiff and rough feeling. So far this project has been fun, and it may be a little more time-consuming than buying a mini-album for this event, but I think in the end I will feel more freedom to rip out pages and glue stuff down in this album. I really want to branch out of my traditional scrapping techniques and learn some new ones! What are some of the craziest things or techniques you’ve used for a mini-album? Keep me posted at the Craziest thing or technique you've used in a mini-album thread in the forum!
Create something, inspire everyone.

What's Your Opinion?
10/4/2007 10:08:39 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Please share your ideas in the forum in response to this reader's questions. We're also going to get the Masters to weigh in!

Carol from Georgia wrote:

I have noticed that almost all your treatments are on a page-by-page
basis.  Is this how most people do their scrapbooks?  I've wondered
about making the whole scrapbook consistent.  Is that a good method?
I've seen a few theme albums that do that (based around a wedding, a
trip, a new baby, etc.), but it seems like it might be good to work
toward a unified look throughout an album, rather than having one page
bright and expressive and the next collage-style and fussy and a third
classic and simple. What does everyone think?

Come to the What's Your Opinion About Albums thread in the forum and share your ideas and opinions.

Peace and love,

Iris Folding
9/28/2007 10:35:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

1leaf.jpg
A few days ago on the Tips and Techniques forum someone started a thread on iris folding. (The thread is called “Please respond anyone!” which just goes to show that you need to read all the threads, because you never know what gems you’ll run across.)

Iris folding is something I’ve always thought was cool, but never got around to trying. With the tips and links in this thread, I had no excuse. Circle of Crafters.com has all the instructions and patterns you need, including the maple-leaf pattern I used last night to create this greeting card.

Iris patterns look complicated, but the folding and positioning of the paper strips is actually fast and simple. If you’re in a hurry, I’d suggest using a simpler shape than the maple leaf, because making intricate cuts in cardstock isn’t a speedy operation, as I discovered at 10:30 p.m. last night.

But let’s get back to the forum thread. There you’ll find a friendly discussion of papers to use, width of strips, how to get the same look without folding, and so on—everything except pictures of iris folding. Let’s change that. Why not try iris folding this weekend and post your work here. Looking forward to seeing it!

Responding to the Challenge
9/27/2007 12:30:38 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Thanks for the challenge Patty! I knew exactly what pictures I wanted to use, since I've been holding onto these fall pics since, well … last fall. What I love most about the fall and any of my favorite seasons is the way that God’s beautiful creativity shines in every season. These pics were taken from Kelley’s Island on Lake Erie, pretty close to my hometown, and I absolutely love watching the sun set on the lake. I tried to keep my embellishments simple because I wanted the focus to be on the photos. I cut out the parentheses and arrows from the Rusty Pickle School Daze collection, and used foam adhesives to give the page depth. What’s your response to Patty’s Attitude of Gratitude challenge? I challenge you to stop and think about the things we take for granted everyday that take our breath away.

Create something, inspire everyone.

Scrapbooking Is Cool
9/24/2007 11:22:10 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
So, you know scrapbooking is cool when your Internet Marketing Director makes a scrapbook layout for his daughter's 4th birthday.

Our pal Tim wrote a sweet poem for his little Lydia and then created a page all on his own. You should have seen him up in our office area Friday, trimming and cutting and adhering away! He looked like a pro.

And, it looks like the poem and the layout were a big hit with Lydia!

Best,
Beth

For what are you grateful?
9/21/2007 12:26:26 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
My dear friend, HikerGuy, sent me these gorgeous flowers to celebrate life – this week I got the test results that say my cancer is in remission! As I sit here working, the warm scent of the stargazer lilies and roses fill the air, and for that I am grateful.

Throughout this health challenge there have been so many acts of kindness for which I am grateful:
•Meals cooked, full of nutrition and love
•Errands run that I couldn’t do myself
•Chores around the house I was too weak to manage
•Visits from loved ones when my blood counts were so low I couldn’t go out of the house
•Cards of encouragement
•E-mails with silly stories to make me laugh and powerful stories of survival to lift me up

Yet we don’t need to have survived cancer to know and show gratitude. What are the little things that make your life meaningful?

I love having my kitten cuddle with me. Love to watch the hummingbirds fly around my balcony garden. Love to sit outside in the morning with my cup of coffee and watch the neighborhood awaken. For all of that, I am grateful.

This week’s challenge goes like this:
1.    Create a 1-page layout with the title An Attitude of Gratitude
2.    Include at least three different photos
3.    Use autumn colors (Autumn begins this Sunday) as your palette
4.    Include two different embellishments

Post your pages to Gratitude Challenge in the forum before October 5.

Before I sign off, I want you all to know how grateful I am for you, too. The creative community we’re all a part of here at MM provides me with inspiration and support that makes a positive difference in my life. Thank you.

Peace and love,
  Patty

Scrapping Everyday Life
9/20/2007 10:12:01 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
In light of Katie’s blog, I wanted to share with you what I created during our fun craft time. I was also inspired by the Love, Elsie Jack + Abby line from KI Memories because it has a lot of neat designs and embelliMySanctuaryWeb.jpgshments for scrapping about your home, and the color scheme was perfect. I recently moved down to Cincy and purchased new bedding, which was no easy task, because I’m picky and don’t like a bunch of flowery things. After many hours of shopping online … I finally found a coverlet, sheets and pillows that I absolutely love. The brown and blue colors mixed with a  simple but graphic design, is completely my style. I wanted to scrap a part of my everyday life, and the simple things like a new bed and bedding that can seriously make you feel, well … warm and fuzzy on the inside. I entitled the page My Sanctuary to emphasize the feeling of rest and peace that I find there. What does your everyday life look like? For more ideas on how to scrap your everyday life pick up a copy of That’s Life by Nic Howard.

Create something...inspire everyone.
