Want to get organized?
9/14/2007 12:21:13 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) You all responded in full force to my request for suggestions on how to carry my pages back and forth from home to office. Thank you! Because of the overwhelming response (100+), and because it was just too hard to pick one good reply, we chose our winner at random. The Making Memories Embellishment Center is going out to jab*hope*. To read her great organization suggestions, and a wealth of other helpful ideas, go to Armed and Ready in the forum. On a personal note, I'll be getting test results next week from my doctor which will tell us if my cancer is in remission. Every day I feel a little stronger and a little better, and in my heart I believe the cancer IS in remission. Thank you to all of you who've been sending me your support and positive energy. I'll share the results with you next Friday. And perhaps we need to do another creative challenge next week? Stay tuned ... Peace and love to you and yours, Patty

Inspired
9/13/2007 10:30:11 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I'm grateful that this job continually inspires me. Yesterday, in between editing pieces for our February 2008 issue and planning for our March 2008 issue, I was fortunate to meet an artist who has been a BIG inspiration to me: Kelly Rae Roberts. (me, Kelly Rae) A few months ago, when I found out Kelly Rae was writing a book for North Light Books, I was thrilled (not only because she was writing a book but also because I knew there was a possibility of meeting her). Kelly Rae combines inspiring words with beautiful images, creating art that truly speaks to me. I've purchased two of her prints (see below) and the "Wear Red Shoes" print currently hangs in my cube. When I met Kelly Rae yesterday, I got a sneak peek at some of the art that's going in her book (it's fabulous!) and got to hang out in the photo studio with Kelly Rae, her book editor, designer and photographer. I returned to my desk feeling happy and inspired. I have a number of art and writing projects I want to work on, and after talking with Kelly Rae and seeing some of her newest work, I have a renewed sense of spirit. I can't wait to do some creating. Being inspired and being able to inspire others is such a wonderful part of scrapbooking, memory keeping and art making. Who is your biggest inspiration? And how do you inspire others? All the best, Katie

Weddings and Anniversaries
9/11/2007 6:17:28 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Last weekend my niece got married, which I had thought would make for easy blog photos. Ha! There’s a reason brides hire professional photographers. My husband's no slouch of a photographer, but with a constantly moving crowd and tricky lighting in an unfamiliar place, even he found it hard to get good photos. Between my husband and daughter I came up with a couple to share. (I shot with film and haven’t finished the roll.) The wedding and reception were held in an old school building that had been renovated and repurposed as an antique shop/restaurant/event hall. The bride and groom are the ones about to descend the stairs. I like this candid shot—something you probably wouldn’t get from a professional wedding photographer. Click here for tips on taking candid wedding photos. I was touched by the wedding favors. Inside the gold box is a chocolate from a candy store in my mother’s hometown. My mother passed away several years ago—she’s the only grandparent who wasn’t at the wedding. Of course, when there are weddings there will also be anniversaries. Recently there was a forum discussion about ideas for a wedding anniversary album. Check it out and add your own ideas. My mother once told me that she had seen her grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary. She and I saw her parents’ 50th anniversary, and a few years before she passed away, she celebrated her own 50th. My husband and I are a long way from 50 years, but we’re making steady progress. I wish my niece and new nephew 50 years and more. Holly

Feels Like Fall
9/10/2007 11:29:17 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) When I stepped outside this morning to head to work, I thought to myself, "Today is the first morning that feels like fall."
The thought made me smile because the in-between fall season is my favorite. For me, fall brings warm mugs of apple cider, changing leaves, pumpkin-flavored dishes and desserts, cozy sweaters, crisp air, bright sunshine, my birthday, possibility and hope. In our October issue (on sale September 18), the MM team shares favorite fall quotations, and we ask you to share your favorites, as well. Post Autumn quotations, reflections and pages here. I took the photos featured in this blog during the last few fall seasons, and I'm looking forward to snapping some great photos this year, too. I'm thinking that a collection of favorite fall photos would make a delightful theme album! —Katie

Can this scrap space be saved?
9/7/2007 11:01:28 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
I don’t have a good reason why my scrapping space (which is my living room) looks like this. Perhaps it’s because I love sitting on the floor creating my next project in child’s pose (hey … I do yoga whenever I can these days!). Or more honestly, perhaps it’s because I’m overwhelmed with all the product I have and don’t know where to begin.
But thanks to GinaMarie’s blog yesterday, and all your helpful posts, I’m inspired to do something about this mess. However, I have a specific organizational request: Tell me how you transport pages from one location to another. I often work on things here at home and then need to take them to the office—I want/need some kind of tote to take my pages back and forth.
Send me your tote ideas at Armed and Ready by midnight Thursday 9/13. Then we’ll pick one outstanding, innovative, cool organizational idea (not just about totes but from all the ideas we get) and send that lucky scrapper Making Memories new Embellishment Center (valued at $74.99!). Here’s how Making Memories describes their “epicenter of creativity”:
A large wall-hanging storage unit for all your crafting supplies. This beautiful piece of finished furniture includes: multiple shelves for storage jars or tins, and a dowel for ribbon organization. (Jars, paints, supplies, etc., not included.)
Here’s a photo of the wall-hanging unit, with our lovely birt hday-girl GinaMarie!

Looking forward to hearing your ideas.
Peace and love, Patty

How do you stay organized?
9/6/2007 3:06:54 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I have a mighty project before me, and I’m calling on my scrapbooking sisters for guidance! The task is not as mighty as I’m making it sound, but without a proper workstation, and organization is not one of my "natural" strengths, this project seems a bit daunting. Having just moved to Cincy and into a one-bedroom apartment, finding space to create has been difficult. The project that's challenging me is a wedding scrapbook, but I need to get organized before I can finish it. How do you organize your space so you can create and not have to deal with what I call my creative-genius-whirlwind (i.e., mess)? I'm also in search of new tools to use on this project that will make my creative life a little more simple. Do you have any tools that you use and you just want the entire world to know about? Share some of your organizational tips, post some photos of your oh-so-nice-and-neat workstations and discuss the must-have tools at the new thread Armed and Ready in the forum. Can’t wait to hear from you! (HELP! My floor is being swallowed by patterned paper!) GinaMarie

My wings are made of ...
9/4/2007 11:48:03 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) ... rubber. Finally got a chance to sit down and scrap the 8/24 challenge. I kept it really simple, which is the mode I've been operating in lately ... you know, "Less is more" and "Don't make it harder than it has to be." The words in my butterfly's flight pattern are "flexible, strong and buoyant," traits that serve me well these days. (And, I'm using the word buoyant in the sense of "cheerful" and "lightness of spirit," as Webster's notes, rather than "tending to float in a fluid," which, while also true, just doesn't sound quite as uplifting!) Hope you're having a great day! Best, Beth

Want to win?
8/31/2007 11:03:14 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Woohoo—it’s Friday! AND it’s absolutely gorgeous here in Cincy … a great day to be alive. Despite the beautiful day, I’ve had a bit of technological difficulty scanning my page. A big THANK YOU to Amy Glander (MMBooks), Susan Smith (HOW magazine) and Katie & GinaMarie for help with the scanner. Which brings me to the topic of my layout: My Wings Are Made of Words. Give me an article to write, and it’s smooth sailing. Give me an art project or technical chore, and I am challenged! This version of my response to the 8/24 Challenge is my second creation. (You still have time to enter your layout. You can't win a copy of We Dare You if you don't enter!) Both efforts got me out of my comfort zone and I LOVED the experience. The journaling says: when I write, even if no one reads those words, I know peace. ~pmc (You can't see it here, but on the swirls in the lower, left corner are handwritten words of prayers.) Speaking of words, we were talking yesterday about words that are fun to say. You know, words that just feel good rolling over your lips. Here are ours, what are yours? Beth – funkadelic, bazillion, ellipses Patty – serendipitous, gajillion, plethora (thanks GiM for reminding me) Christy – fantabulous and grace (less is more in the word department) Katie – smitten, yummy, possibility Holly - Aberystwyth (the castle), Raoul (the name), Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (longest word in the English language) GinaMarie - snappers, stupendous, plethora Peace and love, Patty

Meet the "newbie" on the MM team!
8/30/2007 11:52:03 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I just joined the MM staff as an assistant editor and wanted to take a moment as the “newbie” of the team to introduce myself and also share with you my “Wings Challenge” creation. My name is GinaMarie (yes that is my whole first name, I don't have a middle one :) and I moved down here from Norwalk, a small town in northern Ohio. I went to Capital University and graduated with a degree in English Literature and Professional Writing, and was previously working at a horse and carriage specialty magazine as an assistant editor. After working for almost a year for a scrapbooking retail store in my hometown...I became addicted to scrapbooking and making cards. When the opportunity presented itself, I happily accepted this new job, excited that two worlds I deeply enjoy would become intertwined: editing and scrapbooking. As for the challenge, my title is “My Wings Are Made of Grace,” because I know it is God alone that has given me the grace and strength to become the woman He’s created me to be, and without Him I would have nothing. I emphasized each word using a different medium and tried to add as much texture as I could to the page without making it seem too crowded or busy. My favorite details on the page are the My Mind’s Eye transparencies and the acrylic blocks I used to add depth and dimension to the page. The dragonfly transparency was from My Mind’s Eye Bohemia 2 Boulevard collection, and I attached it to the page using a brad and another acrylic block to add depth and allow the dragonfly to “swing” freely over the page. I love using many techniques on one page, and the challenge was fun because it made me think creatively within the bounds of structure. How will you handle the “challenge”? Click here to see what amazing things people have created in the forum, and download your page to join in the fun!

Wings
8/29/2007 1:57:38 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Hi and Happy Wednesday! I'm itching to get in on Patty's 8.24 challenge, "My Wings Are Made of ..." I haven't had time to create a page yet, but I know what my wings are made of -- rubber! They represent flexibility, resiliency, durability and buoyancy ... traits that serve me well these days! Speaking of wings, we just finished redecorating Mei-Lin's room in a
butterfly motif. Joel painted the walls, and Mei-Lin and I "scrapb ooked"
them with beautiful butterfly stickers from WallWear (available at Home Depot). They were so easy to
use ... Just peel and stick (and easily reposition a time or two or
three to get just the right flight pattern!) I like to think that
these butterfly wings bring cotton-candy colored dreams to Mei-Lin
when she goes to bed each night ... There's plenty of time for her to develop her own set of rubber wings for the future. Best,
Beth

...FAITH
8/28/2007 4:03:38 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) My Wings Are Made Of Faith... This is my response to Patty's 8.24 challenge. Just like any other day I take the time to create what's on my mind, I learn so much about myself. I love these challenges because they get me thinking on a level that my busy schedule doesn't normally allow for. Have you posted your layout in the forum yet? I can't wait to see your beautiful creations! Christy
