Want to win?
8/31/2007 11:03:14 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Woohoo—it’s Friday! AND it’s absolutely gorgeous here in Cincy … a great day to be alive.

Despite the beautiful day, I’ve had a bit of technological difficulty scanning my page. A big THANK YOU to Amy Glander (MMBooks), Susan Smith (HOW magazine) and Katie & GinaMarie for help with the scanner.

Which brings me to the topic of my layout: My Wings Are Made of Words. Give me an article to write, and it’s smooth sailing. Give me an art project or technical chore, and I am challenged! This version of my response to the 8/24 Challenge is my second creation. (You still have time to enter your layout. You can't win a copy of We Dare You if you don't enter!) Both efforts got me out of my comfort zone and I LOVED the experience.

The journaling says: when I write, even if no one reads those words, I know peace. ~pmc
(You can't see it here, but on the swirls in the lower, left corner are handwritten words of prayers.)

Speaking of words, we were talking yesterday about words that are fun to say. You know, words that just feel good rolling over your lips. Here are ours, what are yours?

Beth – funkadelic, bazillion, ellipses
Patty – serendipitous, gajillion, plethora (thanks GiM for reminding me)
Christy – fantabulous and grace (less is more in the word department)
Katie – smitten, yummy, possibility
Holly - Aberystwyth (the castle), Raoul (the name), Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (longest word in the English language)
GinaMarie - snappers, stupendous, plethora

Peace and love,
 Patty

Meet the "newbie" on the MM team!
8/30/2007 11:52:03 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
I just joined the MM staff as an assistant editor and wanted to take a moment as the “newbie” of the team to introduce myself and also share with you my “Wings Challenge” creation. My name is GinaMarie (yes that is my whole first name, I don't have a middle one :) and I moved down here from Norwalk, a small town in northern Ohio. I went to Capital University and graduated with a degree in English Literature and Professional Writing, and was previously working at a horse and carriage specialty magazine as an assistant editor. After working for almost a year for a scrapbooking retail store in my hometown...I became addicted to scrapbooking and making cards. When the opportunity presented itself, I happily accepted this new job, excited that two worlds I deeply enjoy would become intertwined: editing and scrapbooking.gm.WingsChalWeb.jpg

As for the challenge, my title is “My Wings Are Made of Grace,” because I know it is God alone that has given me the grace and strength to become the woman He’s created me to be, and without Him I would have nothing. I emphasized each word using a different medium and tried to add as much texture as I could to the page without making it seem too crowded or busy. My favorite details on the page are the My Mind’s Eye transparencies and the acrylic blocks I used to add depth and dimension to the page. The dragonfly transparency was from My Mind’s Eye Bohemia 2 Boulevard collection, and I attached it to the page using a brad and another acrylic block to add depth and allow the dragonfly to “swing” freely over the page. I love using many techniques on one page, and the challenge was fun because it made me think creatively within the bounds of structure.

How will you handle the “challenge”? Click here to see what amazing things people have created in the forum, and download your page to join in the fun!

Wings
8/29/2007 1:57:38 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Hi and Happy Wednesday! I'm itching to get in on Patty's 8.24 challenge, "My Wings Are Made of ..." I haven't had time to create a page yet, but I know what my wings are made of -- rubber! They represent flexibility, resiliency, durability and buoyancy ... traits that serve me well these days!

Speaking of wings, we just finished redecorating Mei-Lin's room in a butterfly motif. Joel painted the walls, and Mei-Lin and I "scrapbooked" them with beautiful butterfly stickers from WallWear (available at Home Depot). They were so easy to use ... Just peel and stick (and easily reposition a time or two or three to get just the right flight pattern!)

I like to think that these butterfly wings bring cotton-candy colored dreams to Mei-Lin when she goes to bed each night ... There's plenty of time for her to develop her own set of rubber wings for the future.

Best,
Beth

wings of faith_web.jpgMy Wings Are Made Of Faith...

This is my response to Patty's 8.24 challenge. Just like any other day I take the time to create what's on my mind, I learn so much about myself. I love these challenges because they get me thinking on a level that my busy schedule doesn't normally allow for.

Have you posted your layout in the forum yet? I can't wait to see your beautiful creations!

My Wings Are Made Of...
8/27/2007 1:16:52 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I truly enjoyed participating in Patty's challenge.

The title (My Wings Are Made of Words) came to me quickly. Ever since I was a child, I've been enchanted by words, and because words are such a large part of my life, it made sense that my wings would be made of them. Without words—both reading and writing them—I would not be me.

JOURNALING READS:
Written by me or written by others, I'm always able to escape and soar on a delightful string of words. 8-26-07

TECHNIQUES USED:
I fell in love with the red bird paper from My Mind's Eye. (The paper I used is from the new Bohemia collection.)
lgpics_CrackledPaint.jpg

To create texture, I painted on the brown cardstock with Ranger's new Tim Holtz Distress Crackle Paint. I used "Weathered Wood" because the soft, grayish-blue color matched the blue in the patterned paper. I then glued my title on top of the distressed paint.

The journaling was handwritten on a piece of cream notebook paper that was torn directly out of my art journal. I like the way the handwritten writing contrasts with the antique-looking stamped letters.

It's been wonderful to see how others have responded to this challenge. If you haven't shared your page yet, please do so here. Or, if you're unable to participate in the challenge, but would still like to share what your wings are made of, please leave me a comment.

All the best,

Katie

Will you call me Rapunzel? 8/24 Challenge
8/24/2007 11:05:24 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

No, I don’t have long flowing hair; I’m still a bit of the team’s Chia pet. But look – I do have some hair! Being bald has been liberating and taught me a lot about inner beauty (who I am has far more to do with my mind, heart and soul than my hair and weight).

In the spirit of taking flight into a new chapter of life and all things fuzzy like my hair, here’s our latest challenge:

•Create a 1-page layout that is NOT 12x12 and NOT square
•The title of the layout is: My Wings Are Made of ________(fill in the blank)
•Include texture
•Have fun with typography

Post your pages in the forum before midnight September 4. We’ll announce the winner in our September 5 e-newsletter (go to our homepage to sign-up). The winner will receive a copy of We Dare You, the hot new book from Memory Makers Books.

We can’t wait to see your creations!

Peace and love,
 Patty

Show Off Your Embellished Chipboard
8/21/2007 12:25:03 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

GinaMarie.jpg
Meet GinaMarie Reda, the newest member on the Memory Makers Magazine editorial team. She’ll begin blogging soon, and I’m sure she’ll want to introduce herself, so for now I’ll just say that we’re thrilled to have her on board.

A new team member means a reshuffling of responsibilities, so last week I was told I’d be moderating the Tips and Techniques forum. This is the place to go for advice about a tool or technique. Start exploring, and it’s hard to break away.

My favorite find in my recent exploration was a reference to a thread on another forum giving 34 ways to make chipboard pop. The list is summarized in the first message, but if you read the whole thread, those techniques really come alive with tips and ideas.

Let’s revive the chipboard thread. Take a look and add a technique or suggest a tip for a technique already mentioned. And don’t forget to post a photo of your embellished chipboard.

Take Advantage of Your Camera's Self-Timer
8/20/2007 3:17:02 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

DSC00604_bw_small.jpgLuke's sister got married this past weekend. After the preparation, the ceremony, reception and photos (8 hours later), we were exhausted. After the wedding we just wanted to go somewhere and chill. I haven't lived in Cincinnati all that long, so I told him to take me wherever he wanted to go.

We ended up at Union Terminal, an old train station that is now the history museum. We walked around inside for a little bit, but I was more interested in the large fountain outside. The weather was beautiful and it was the perfect time at night for photos. Luke doesn't like to have his picture taken, but we don't get this dressed up very often and I wanted a photo of the two of us. He's getting used to the idea that the camera's always in my back pocket.

Although I was thankful for the peaceful time alone with Luke by the fountain, there wasn't anyone around to take our picture.  And it's times like these that I want to remember. So I took full advantage of the self-timer on my camera. With a little patience and a few tries, I got the photo I wanted.

Next time you don't have anyone around to take photos remember that you can still capture the moment with just the camera and you. A couple of tips:

1. Don't worry about cropping, you can do that later. Just capture the moment you are looking for.
2. To save time, visualize the composition before you take the picture. If you can, get rid of any unnecessary background elements or make sure there is nothing too distracting behind you if you are outdoors. Think about how you want to position yourself and others.

Have a great week,
Christy

Around the Office
8/17/2007 1:42:36 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

For a little Friday fun and to add to Christine's recent blog, here are a few shots from my desk:

The view from my chair: Soon all of these new, empty cubes will have happy residents.

I can't have an afternoon without Diet Coke, Kit Kats and tunes from my iPod. Behind my afternoon necessities, you'll see a picture of me with my younger sister, two fun Fossil tins (I heart vintage owls) and a very fun handmade red-pen box from one of my dear college friends—and now co-workers, Grace.

Happy, inspiration wall: Art print from KellyRae, notes and cards from friends and loved ones, big mug of pens (I'm a bit of a pen junkie) and my chapstick (I'm addicted to Burt's Bees).

And I had to show off my bright orange desk lamp: A $15 steal from West Elm. Behind the lamp I have pictures of me with my grandparents and also photos of friends and family, but you can't see all of those, as the lamp takes up most of the room in this shot.

That's all for now.

Happy Friday, everyone.

Have you responded to the August 9 challenge?
8/17/2007 11:00:48 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
May I just say: TGIF! This heat wave is wearing on me, and I’m way glad to have a weekend of rest!

How are you doing on the August 9 challenge? I’ve seen a handful of pages posted to the forum, but would love to see more. You have until midnight August 20 to post your entry. The winner will receive We Dare You from Memory Makers Books.

Here’s the layout I did in response to the challenge. This adorable pup is my daughter’s long-haired Chihuahua named Coco Chanel. The journaling reads: I have a dream to be the flower girl. I’m including the layout in the wedding album I’m doing for Megan and James.

Peace and love,
 Patty
