Thanks for Sharing
8/8/2007 9:42:11 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Christine, Eileen and I began judging the 2008 Memory Makers Masters competition late last week, and as of yesterday afternoon had made it through all the entries ... close to 600! Tomorrow we narrow down the entries to 25, and then the Memory Makers books and magazine teams will judge with us to select the 10 Masters and 10 runners-up. It's an exciting time, and it's great to see everyone's layouts. A lot of great talent out there, that's for sure! To those who have entered: Thanks for sharing yourself with us. We know what a leap of faith you're taking, and we respect and appreciate your talent. "Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think." — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Best, Beth

Take Advantage of the Forum Calendar
8/7/2007 1:35:28 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Recently Yvette Farrell, the leader of my scrapbooking group, launched Croppin’ Hearts, a business that organizes scrapbooking events for non-profit organizations. Her first event is a two-day workshop/crop fundraiser for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. Yvette asked me whether the Memory Makers forum had a calendar for posting events. Yes, I said, and looked into how she could make her post. That’s when I realized that our calendar is a far-too-little-used asset for the Memory Makers community. To find the calendar, go the Memory Makers Forum (you’ll see a link on our home page) and then click "Calendar" near the top of the page. Click on “Scrap Events” and you’ll get the current month's calendar. You can move to past or coming months by clicking “Previous” or “Forward” at the top of the calendar grid. Click on the event, and you get details. If you move forward to October, you’ll see the Susan G. Komen – iCreate for the Cure and the Heart and Soul Memories Retreat. Unfortunately, at the time of the posting of this blog entry, there are other no postings between now and October. I had to ask myself why, and I concluded that people simply aren’t aware of the calendar—or don’t know how to get an event posted. If you know of a scrapbooking event that accommodates 25 or more people, send an e-mail to mmtech@fwpubs.com. with the words "calendar listing" in the subject line. For a list of what to include in your e-mail, check out a forum thread under FAQs entitled How do I post an event on the calendar? I know there’s a lot going on in the scrapbooking world between now and October. Give your event a little free publicity—and check the calendar frequently for events occurring in your area.

Share Your Pages
8/6/2007 5:01:04 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I just spent some time looking through the latest Online Idea Gallery submissions. I love to look at the submissions we get daily—so many inspiring artists and ideas! Have you been to the gallery? You can search our vast archive of scrapbooking ideas and layouts. Search by category, or type in a word or phrase that best describes what you're looking for. And speaking of all of the inspiring layouts in the gallery, have you submitted your work yet? If not, here’s how to get involved: Submit a scanned image of your layout with a short paragraph about your journaling and a list of the supplies used here. We showcase a different featured page every day. We also send out an e-mail twice a week that shows the most recent pages submitted. Sign up for the e-mail at our Web site. I look forward to seeing your pages! All the best, Katie

Do you feel the excitement?
8/3/2007 12:02:21 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) The Master's judging for 2008 has begun!! Last week Kristin (one of the Memory Makers Books editors) wrote about the many uses of pizza boxes in her blog. She can add: Use as mailing package to her list—we received one entry to the contest in this pizza box (above). The note says: Sorry this isn't a real pizza, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. The note and ingenuity made us all smile...in the face of opening the hundreds of boxes (see below)! We're hearing the buzz on the forum about how the waiting is the hardest part. Hang in there, dear friends, the wait won't be too long. Perhaps that's easy for me to say, eh? TGIF! We're having my daughter's first bridal shower this weekend, and I'm looking forward to taking lots of pictures for her album (which BTW, is coming along nicely). Hope you have some time to be creative this weekend...Peace and love, Patty

Tell Us Your Contest Story
7/31/2007 2:03:02 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) In a few hours the entry period for the 2008 Memory Makers Masters Contest will close. Packages with a July 31-deadline postmark will continue to pour in for a few days and the preliminary judging will soon start. To the left you see Sara with this morning’s contest arrivals. Sara is the one you can thank for opening and organizing your contest entries. I’ve been answering contest questions on the forum, so I know what a combination of excitement, stress, triumph, self-doubt, and satisfaction entering the contest entails. Yesterday I heard from a woman who was told by her local printing/photocopying store that she couldn’t photocopy her layouts because of the supply manufacturers’ copyrights. (Photocopying or scanning four of the five layouts entries is a contest requirement, and yes, she was able to copy the layouts and no, the scrapbook suppliers won’t come after us for copyright infringement.) I’ve read about people who sent out their contest entries and then wondered if a layout they produced a few days later might have been a better choice. Then there were people who didn’t realize they needed model releases for everyone in their photos and had only a few days to contact people in far-flung places. In the midst of it all, forum members were boosting each other’s morale, holding each other’s virtual hands and offering advice. Now the entrants can sit back, stress free and wait for the winners to be announced publicly by August 22. Stress free? Waiting isn’t always stress free, is it? I propose we help by swapping our best contest stories on the forum. Tell us the funny, frustrating and incredible things that happened as you were entering a scrapbooking contest, past or present, Memory Makers or not. (Just avoid lambasting other companies or organizations. That’s not what this is about.) Maybe you’d also like to post a layout about your experience. Let’s all get together and tell a few stories to help the 2008 Memory Makers Masters while away the time. Holly

GASC Recap
7/30/2007 1:39:11 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Hello everyone, I'm back from The Great American Scrapbook Convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan! My thoughts on the show:It was wonderful to see so many passionate scrapbookers gathered in one place. During my time at the show, I helped check people in and sign them up for classes. I loved seeing all of the women with their husbands or boyfriends, the large groups of chattering, excited girlfriends and the inquisitive solo scrappers who couldn't wait to spend the day immersed in scrapbooking. I also was fortunate to spend a few minutes observing the crops that were held Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and those, too, were inspiring to watch. Everyone was so dedicated to their projects, and I'm sure that the creations that came out of those sessions are incredible. If you were at the show, let me know your thoughts. Did you take classes? Get some great goodies while shopping? Attend the crops? I'd love to hear about your experiences. All the best, Katie

What inspires you?
7/27/2007 12:14:00 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Thank you all for the submissions to our 2-page challenge! We loved seeing your work in the forum. Tristann Graves was our winner with her Tuscany Tour layout and she'll be receiving a copy of We Dare You from Memory Makers Books for her efforts. Congratulations, Tristann! Although I've been working on Megan's wedding scrapbook, I've been feeling a bit uninspired lately. But a sure cure for me is poetry. Last night I was reading a collection of poems by my favorite poet (Mary Oliver), and found a poem that, with its few lines, renewed my creative desires. Here's a part of Messenger: Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me keep my mind on what matters, which is my work, which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished.
Find what inspires you this weekend and take the time to be creative.
Peace and love, Patty

Great Black and White Photos
7/26/2007 3:19:44 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I love black and white photography. There is something about it that just says "elegant." It's so easy to change a color photo to black and white these days. However, there's something that you can do to make your black and white photos better. I found this great step-by-step at popphoto.com. Check out my original black-and-white photo [far left] and the one I created by follow the simple step by step [near left]. The second photo has more dimension and personality. The great thing is that it only took me about 15 minutes to do! Great photography can add magic to a layout. But let's face it, we
don't always get the perfect shot. Sometimes the photo is too dark,
blurry or just flat out boring. With photo-editing software it's easy
to fix these problems. Popphoto.com is a great resource for getting the most out of your photography. Ideas for cropping, how to shoot nightscapes, getting the best composition and much more. So before you toss those photos you think aren't great, take a look at this site and see if there's an easy fix. Have a great day, Christy

A Ribbon By Any Other Name
7/25/2007 9:39:14 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Strano Designs launched new ribbons at CHA last week, including two grosgrain ribbons named after our very own 2007 Memory Makers Masters Crystal Jeffrey Rieger and Ronee Parsons. Congratulations, ladies! Here are Crystal and Ronee in ribbon form. How cool is that?!! If you were to have a product named after you, what would it be and what would it be called? Tell us here! If
I were to choose for me, I'd like a pretty paper collection—soft blue,
pink and yellow vintage calico sprigs and coordinating tiny polka-dot
papers–named Bethie Boo. My 12-years-younger-than-me sister Tiffany
used to call me that when she was little. Then again, Bethie
Boo would make a great Halloween paper featuring winsome girl ghosts
wearing pink ribbons on their heads. Hmmm ... Best, Beth

Tale of Two Layouts
7/24/2007 2:33:42 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) This past Saturday I worked on two layouts with my neighborhood cropping group.

Sunset features a photo I snapped several years ago somewhere between Cleveland and Cincinnati after visiting my parents. The serendipitous shot underlines the advantage of carrying your camera at all times. Hair Don’ts is a gallery of my daughter’s hairstyling creations. She used to love giving my husband silly hairdos embellished with ribbons, hair bands and barrettes. You gotta give my husband credit for humoring her, not to mention letting me place these photos on the Internet. His only stipulation was that he remain unnamed. Hair Don’ts won’t win any design prizes, but it proved a rich learning experience for me. See all those circular photos and frames? The photos were cut with a Creative Memories cutting system I borrowed from a fellow cropper. The photo frames, added at home, were hand cut with the help of household-object templates. Believe me, the Creative Memories system was easier. This product has been around a while, but if you’re not familiar with it, click here to see a podcast demonstration by Noell Hyman. The podcast takes several minutes to load, so you might want to open it on another window or tab. I created the scallops on the outside of the Hair Don'ts photo frames using a modified version of Catherine Feegel-Erhardt’s scalloped-edge technique on page 61 of Memory Makers' August/September issue. Thank you, Catherine. Of the two layouts, Sunset is the most attractive, but for all its design flaws, in some ways I like my Hair Don’ts layout better. I love its silliness and the family memories it evokes—and I’m pleased with myself for figuring out how to create a circular, scalloped frame. Do you have a layout you know isn’t your best but that you still love? Tell us about it and give us a link so we can see it.

Little Me
7/23/2007 9:44:13 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Since the winner of our 2-page Challenge will be receiving a copy of We Dare You, I decided to do one of the Dares in the book for today’s blog entry. (Important Note: The 2-page Challenge winner will be announced in Wednesday's e-newsletter, so if you're not a subscriber, click here to sign up.)The DareLITTLE ME: Ahh, those good old time-warp photos. The horrific 1970s sofa. The crazy wallpaper. Us in cords with bowl haircuts. For this Dare, scrap a childhood photo of you or someone you know. The older the better. Capture those vintage bits of memorabilia in modern day art. JOURNALING: I think this might have been around the time my dad took me to the BARBER SHOP to get my hair cut. After making this layout, I called my mom and told her about it. It turns out that this ISN’T a picture from the time my dad took me to the barber shop to get my hair cut! Oops! My mother informed me that the actual haircut was much shorter, and I was only two years old at the time. Since this isn't the infamous barber-shop cut, I can’t wait (and
am a little afraid) to see a picture of it. I’ll certainly
search for that photo the next time I visit my parents! And once I find it, perhaps I'll switch out the photo that's currently on the page. Or, maybe I'll just fix the journaling and keep the photo. Despite this page's inaccuracies, I still couldn't resist sharing it. I suppose the photo does go with the prompt’s mention of bowl
haircuts. And while you’re looking at the photo, check out the polka-dot bow on my dress. It’s HUGE! You’ve got to love grade school
picture-day outfits. Try this Dare yourself, and as always, please share your work. (Did you have a bowl haircut at some point? What about a crazy picture-day outfit?) I’ve set up a thread in the forum. Go there to post your "Little Me" pages. Katie
