Tale of Two Layouts
Tuesday, July 24, 2007 2:33:42 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) This past Saturday I worked on two layouts with my neighborhood cropping group.

Sunset features a photo I snapped several years ago somewhere between Cleveland and Cincinnati after visiting my parents. The serendipitous shot underlines the advantage of carrying your camera at all times. Hair Don’ts is a gallery of my daughter’s hairstyling creations. She used to love giving my husband silly hairdos embellished with ribbons, hair bands and barrettes. You gotta give my husband credit for humoring her, not to mention letting me place these photos on the Internet. His only stipulation was that he remain unnamed. Hair Don’ts won’t win any design prizes, but it proved a rich learning experience for me. See all those circular photos and frames? The photos were cut with a Creative Memories cutting system I borrowed from a fellow cropper. The photo frames, added at home, were hand cut with the help of household-object templates. Believe me, the Creative Memories system was easier. This product has been around a while, but if you’re not familiar with it, click here to see a podcast demonstration by Noell Hyman. The podcast takes several minutes to load, so you might want to open it on another window or tab. I created the scallops on the outside of the Hair Don'ts photo frames using a modified version of Catherine Feegel-Erhardt’s scalloped-edge technique on page 61 of Memory Makers' August/September issue. Thank you, Catherine. Of the two layouts, Sunset is the most attractive, but for all its design flaws, in some ways I like my Hair Don’ts layout better. I love its silliness and the family memories it evokes—and I’m pleased with myself for figuring out how to create a circular, scalloped frame. Do you have a layout you know isn’t your best but that you still love? Tell us about it and give us a link so we can see it.

Little Me
Monday, July 23, 2007 9:44:13 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Since the winner of our 2-page Challenge will be receiving a copy of We Dare You, I decided to do one of the Dares in the book for today’s blog entry. (Important Note: The 2-page Challenge winner will be announced in Wednesday's e-newsletter, so if you're not a subscriber, click here to sign up.)The DareLITTLE ME: Ahh, those good old time-warp photos. The horrific 1970s sofa. The crazy wallpaper. Us in cords with bowl haircuts. For this Dare, scrap a childhood photo of you or someone you know. The older the better. Capture those vintage bits of memorabilia in modern day art. JOURNALING: I think this might have been around the time my dad took me to the BARBER SHOP to get my hair cut. After making this layout, I called my mom and told her about it. It turns out that this ISN’T a picture from the time my dad took me to the barber shop to get my hair cut! Oops! My mother informed me that the actual haircut was much shorter, and I was only two years old at the time. Since this isn't the infamous barber-shop cut, I can’t wait (and
am a little afraid) to see a picture of it. I’ll certainly
search for that photo the next time I visit my parents! And once I find it, perhaps I'll switch out the photo that's currently on the page. Or, maybe I'll just fix the journaling and keep the photo. Despite this page's inaccuracies, I still couldn't resist sharing it. I suppose the photo does go with the prompt’s mention of bowl
haircuts. And while you’re looking at the photo, check out the polka-dot bow on my dress. It’s HUGE! You’ve got to love grade school
picture-day outfits. Try this Dare yourself, and as always, please share your work. (Did you have a bowl haircut at some point? What about a crazy picture-day outfit?) I’ve set up a thread in the forum. Go there to post your "Little Me" pages. Katie

CHA and a Horror Fest Weekend?
Friday, July 20, 2007 11:41:06 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Had a jam-packed day checking out new product at CHA today. We'll be sharing a few trends and highlights in Saturday's e-mail ... In the meantime, here are some products that caught my eye: KI Memories Pop Culture 7gypsies Artist Trading Card Revolving Holder and TagsCosmo Cricket Metallic Rub-onsMaya Road Office Notes and Scallop Ric RacPiggy Tales Hide & Seek Flap BookUrban Lily Secretkeeper Cards
I also really liked Tinkering Ink's Blur line, K&Co.'s Silhouette Kit, Technique Tuesday's Rocket Man acrylic stamps and Sandylion's Licorice Lane collection. Later in the evening, Courtney Walsh and 2007 Masters Katrina Simeck, Michele Skinner, Catherine Feegel-Erhardt, Lisa Tutman-Oglesby and Crystal Jeffrey Rieger joined our company team for dinner tonight ... lots of laughter and fun. What an awesome group of women! Only wish all of our Masters dcould have been there! After dinner, Catherine, Michele, Katrina, Lisa, Crystal and I went to the hotel where several of them were staying, and where a horrorfest weekend was being held. The word on the street was that Freddie Krueger (Robert Englund) was there, and sure enough, he was! I managed to catch the back of his head with my camera. My trigger finger was a little slow! Quite the highlight of the evening! (I'd load my photos, but I've crashed this blog three times now, so it looks like it's not meant to be. Grrr. Oh, well.) Heading to bed now ... hope I don't have Freddie nightmares! Best, Beth

Are you going to join in the fun?
Friday, July 20, 2007 9:22:10 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I’m lovin’ the activity our 2-page, multi-photo challenge has generated in the forum! The pages I’ve seen so far are great, and I can’t wait to see more. You’ve still got time to enter because the deadline for this challenge isn’t until 12:00 a.m., Monday, July 23. (The winner of this challenge will receive a copy of We Dare You from Memory Makers Books!) I said I’d share my 2-page, multi-photo layout with y’all today, and here it is. I’m not quite finished, but it’s coming together. Working on this reminded me how frustrated I get when creating 2-page layouts! Christy and Katie came over to see what I was doing yesterday, and at first glance it looked like I was having a ball, just merrily scrapping away. They quickly saw I was stressed and just as quickly found reasons to return to their desks—they’re smart women . Next Friday (July 27), I’ll post the winner here, so be sure to come and see who won … it could be you! Peace and love, Patty

Hanging Out at CHA
Thursday, July 19, 2007 10:07:04 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Christine and I taught our dimensions and texture class at pre-CHA this morning. Lots of fun with Diamond Glaze; acrylic letters Mod Podged with tissue paper; and freehanded and templated felt embellishments. Loved the way everyone just dove in and played with the process ... this class was all about experimentation rather than cookie-cutter finished pages, and it was so inspiring to see what everyone did with their materials. We had a special guest stop by and help us out ... 2007 Master Crystal Jeffrey Rieger. She added some spunk and insight into the processes, as two of the projects we shared were ones she provided for Memory Makers. Looking forward to walking the huge showroom floor tomorrow, so I'm heading to bed now for a good night's sleep! More tomorrow. Best, Beth

Scrap, for kids’ sake!
Thursday, July 19, 2007 3:35:52 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Kids make me laugh. Their zest for life, candid words and creative energy bring me so much joy—I couldn't get enough of the kids in South Africa. Even though I was exhausted at the end of each day, I went to bed with a happy heart. So when it comes to organizations that help kids I like to be involved. Memory Makers is partnering with Scrapping 4 Inclusion to benefit The Bubel/Aiken Foundation (TBAF) with a special fundraiser subscription drive that you can help with right now! Extend your current Memory Makers subscription, or subscribe through a special fundraiser page, and 30% of the proceeds will go to help kids enjoy inclusion activities through your support of TBAF! Learn great ideas and help now. Through local all-day crops, communities will spend the day scrapbooking, making new friends, and gathering and sharing new ideas. While doing what they love, scrappers are helping Scrapping 4 Inclusion carry out its mission of creating awareness and raising funds on behalf of children with disabilities and their advocates at The Bubel/Aiken Foundation (TBAF). Whether you want to attend, organize or help get the word out, visit scrapping4inclusion.com where you can learn more and find a crop close to you. Here are the next three crops: August 12 Des Moines, IowaAugust 25 Columbia/Sumter, South CarolinaSeptember 15 Raleigh/Durham, North CarolinaIt's not everyday that I find a way to combine two of my greatest passions, kids and art, so I e-mailed the organizer for the crop here in Cincinnati this morning in hopes of getting involved locally. I hope you feel inspired to get involved, too! Blessings, Christy

Heading Off to CHA!
Wednesday, July 18, 2007 8:36:59 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I'm way beyond excited to be heading off this morning for the Craft and Hobby Association summer show outside of Chicago! I can't believe it's finally here! Christine and I are teaching a class Thursday morning on adding dimension and texture to pages, and then Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be filled with opportunities to check out the latest and greatest scrapbooking products to be released soon. YAHOO! I'm just a wee bit thrilled. I'll be blogging from the show and will share new finds and adventures as time and WiFi allows. Well, better go load up the car for my five-hour drive from Cincinnati to Chicago. Suitcase? Check. 20-ounce Diet Coke? Check. Laptop? Check. Marie Antoinette book on tape? Check. High School Musical and Hannah Montana CDs? Check. (I'll explain those in a second.) Mei-Lin and her stuff? Check. My little 6-year-old road warrior will be traveling with me to Indianapolis (to hang out with my parents for a few days of fun), and on the way, we'll be rockin' out to "Best of Both Worlds" and "Get'cha Head in the Game." Do we know how to have fun or what?! Chicago, here I come! Best, Beth

Be a 2008 Memory Makers Masters Contest Winner
Tuesday, July 17, 2007 2:00:37 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) The Ohio Lottery has a slogan: If you don’t enter, you can’t win. I’m not much for lotteries, but I encourage you to enter the 2008 Memory Makers Masters Contest. Do it soon, because the entries must be postmarked no later than July 31, 2007. Click here for rules and other contest information. As a magazine editor, I’m not eligible to enter, but as the moderator of the Memory Makers Masters Contest forum, I feel the excitement. I'm the one who answers questions that no mere set of rules could ever hope to cover. Contest entrants occasionally reduce their stress levels by talking to each other about their frustrations or nervousness. As a moderator I don’t have that kind of creative stress--I have what you might call don’t-be-creative stress that comes from making sure I answer questions correctly and consistently so I don’t lead anyone astray. It’s harder than you might think. I sometimes wonder if the contest entrants have gotten together on a different forum somewhere to devise a game of Trip Up the Moderator. “She’ll never be able to answer this one,” they say, or “Let’s see if we can get her to contradict herself.” I love the MMM Contest entrants. They’re a hardy, hopeful, creative bunch. Ten will become 2008 Masters and the rest will have grown tremendously from the experience. Sure, that’s easy for me to say, but I only say it because it’s what the entrants are telling me and each other on the forum. If you don’t enter, you can’t win. But, unlike the Ohio lottery, if you do enter, you will win. Maybe you won’t be a Master, but you’ll still win by creating five new layouts, meeting a challenge, boosting your self-esteem and stretching your creativity. So go to the contest Web pages for the basic rules and visit the forum if you have additional questions or need a bit of moral support. But do it soon. That July 31 postmark due date is just around the bend. Meet you at the forum, Holly Davis

Calling All 20-(and older) Somethings
Monday, July 16, 2007 3:35:53 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Last week, I came across this article about scrapbooking being "hip" with the 20-something crowd. I found the article interesting—and not just because I'm a 20-something. I was quite interested in the comment section, actually. I enjoyed reading what people had to say about the article's claims and appreciated the diversity of responses. So, that got me thinking, and based on that article, I have a few questions to post for discussion. Please share your thoughts on the following in the forum (as well as any other comments you have in regards to the article). Or, if you prefer, leave your comments in the comment section of this blog entry. In all responses, please indicate what age group you fall into: under or over 30. 1a. How do you think the act of scrapbooking differs for 20-somethings when compared with those 30 and older? 1b. How do you think it's the same? 2. Why do you scrapbook? 3. What subjects do you primarily scrapbook? 4. How did you get started scrapbooking? 5. Where do you share your work? 6. Do you use social networking services like FaceBook and MySpace to connect with other scrappers? 7. Do you do any digital scrapbooking? If so, how did you get started and why? If no, are you interested in doing it? Why or why not? 8. Lately, scrapbooking has been called both "hip" and "dowdy" by the news media. What's your take? 9. In the article, it says many 20-somethings enjoy customizing their scrapbooking supplies by making their own paper, painting on layouts, etc. Do you like to use time-saving products like pre-decorated albums, or do you prefer to custom make your scrapbooking supplies? 10. What are your can't-live-without supplies? 11. What did you think of the article? Do you agree with it? Disagree? Why? We can't wait to hear your thoughts! All the best, Katie

Wanna win?
Friday, July 13, 2007 1:35:06 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) We’re in the process of tabulating responses from our Reader Survey (which went to a random selection of e-newsletter subscribers), and it’s clear that folks want to see more photos on a layout and more two-page layouts. So let’s be ahead of the curve and flex our creative muscles and see just what we can come up with! You can WIN one of the newest Memory Makers Books titles, We Dare You, if you post your work by Monday, July 23 in our forum. We’ll choose a winner and send her a copy of We Dare You from Memory Makers Books. Plus, we’ll let you know who the winner was in an upcoming e-newsletter. If you’re not on the that mailing list, subscribe now by clicking here. I’m going to do a layout, too and will post mine here next week. My daughter and fiancé are coming home this weekend so perhaps I’ll start on the opening spread of that wedding album. Can’t wait to see your stuff! Peace and love, Patty

What Are The Top 10 Things You Take For Granted?
Thursday, July 12, 2007 12:47:57 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) The plane landed in Washington at 6 a.m. last Saturday morning. After the 16-hour flight home from South Africa it felt so good to touch the ground. Even though it was good to be home, my feelings were bittersweet. I learned so much while I was is South Africa, not just about another culture and worldly issues, but also about myself, that I wasn't quite ready to come back home. Every person I encountered was a blessing. They were the happiest, most welcoming people I have ever met. Seeing the joy in their eyes and faith in their heart was so inspiring. It is so obvious that their joy does not come from their circumstances. Some of the living conditions, lack of resources and sometimes food would be enough [you'd think] to make someone blue. But they sing, dance, and laugh like they are on top of the world. It hit me when I landed in D.C. and had access to warm water, over abundance of food [and choices], and clean air, etc... that I am so blessed. It has been challenging getting back into the swing of things this week. I have had a lot of reflection time about my experience in South Africa and I came up with a list of the top 10 things that I take for granted: 1: clean air 2: hot showers 3: family 4: shoes 5: food 6: beauty of nature 7: freedom 8: laughter and hugs 9: good health 10: indoor plumbing This list sounds like the start of a great layout! Have a great day! Christy
