7 Things
Monday, July 09, 2007 2:52:41 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Recently, I discovered the Web site Inspire Me Thursday: A weekly dose of inspiration for mixed media artists and creative types to nurture their muses and CREATE!

For those who read my weekly e-newsletter, you know I'm a lover of prompts. I like coming up with them, finding them in books and on Web sites and sharing them with others. (Quick, shameless plug: If you don't subscribe to the Memory Makers e-newsletter, you can sign up to get it for free, every week, here.)

What I like about the Inspire Me Thursday site is that it offers a variety of delicious inspirational information every week. You'll find related prompts for journaling and creating, as well as a "Reflect" section with quotations and notes about art, life and creativity, a "Connect" section that encourages discussion and an "Explore" section with random resources about being creative.

The prompt for Thursday, July 5 was the number 7.

Today is my first day back in the office after a few days of vacation visiting family for the Fourth of July. It was a wonderful visit, and in honor of the 7 prompt, I'm going to share 7 happy highlights from my trip:

1. Laughing with my sister.
2. Delicious food (Chocolate silk pie, fruit salad, deviled eggs, bbq chicken).
3. Fireworks.
4. Catching up with friends and loved ones.
5. Sunshine.
6. Great music for the drive.
7. A new plant for my apartment.

What's your interpretation of this prompt? If you make a page, share it with us (and leave a link on the Inspire Me Thursday site.) If you journal using the prompt, let us know.

Or, just leave your thoughts about the prompt in the comment section of this blog entry. Share seven things you're grateful for today, seven favorite foods, songs, books, people, places. Share seven things on today's to-do list, seven wishes, seven goals. As you can see, the beauty is that there are so many ways this prompt can get you thinking and creating.

And while we're talking about favorites and lists, check out the article "A Few Favorites" by Contributing Editor Kari Hansen. It will help you celebrate the best-loved aspects of your life by creating a favorites mini-album. (And why not stick to the number 7 theme?)

I look forward to hearing all of your thoughts on this prompt and getting to know seven quirky things specific to you. Also, if you've found other sites like Inspire Me Thursday, please share them here.

Happy Monday, everyone!

Katie

Why don't we play more?
Saturday, July 07, 2007 2:56:40 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Take time to play today. Forget about the laundry or trimming the hedge—they'll wait. Just do something fun. I'm thinking of blowing bubbles off my balcony and watching them float away over the neigborhood. And my sister will probably come over and try to kick my butt at Scrabble (which she does with alarming frequency these days, though I tell her I'm at a disadvantage due to cancer. hey! i won't have the excuse forever ;-)

When you're done playing, take a minute to notice how you feel. Lighter? Happier? Younger? More free? Why don't we play more?

I leave you with this thought:

"Sometimes I found that in my happy moments I could not believe that I had ever been miserable."
—Joanna Field

Peace and love,
 Patty

What Are the Wonders of Your World?
Friday, July 06, 2007 10:59:20 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
You may still have time to vote for the New 7 Wonders of the World. The campaign started by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber in 1999 ends at 8 p.m. EDT today. Winners will be announced Saturday.

Makes me wonder where I’ve been the last eight years, because today is the first I heard about it, thanks to an Associated Press Web article.

Finalists include ancient notables such as the Great Wall of China, and Stone Henge as well as more recent structures such as the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty. Each structure represents huge forces affecting our cultural and political thinking—things that affect us daily, though we hardly think about them.

I have to admit, I’m more likely to think of the Central Wonders of My World. Restricting my choices to created beings and things, my hands-down, number-one Central Wonder is my daughter. My husband, I’m sure, would agree. Chances are, you would not. She is, after all, the central wonder of MY world.
newspaper.jpg
Now isn’t that what scrapbooking is all about? Not the big history-book people and events, but the big personal-life people and events. The people closest to us are the movers and shakers of our world.

So yesterday I was delighted to find a news-clipping generator that creates a digital news snippet that can be added to a blog or scrapbook page. You type the newspaper name, date, headline and a few sentences—the generator creates a clipping. The width is fixed, but the length expands to your text length. Download the clipping on a digital layout or print it for a physical layout.

So what are the central wonders of your world? C’mon, I’m inviting you to do some bragging here. And let me know what you think of the news-clipping generator.

Where in the world is Christy Miller?
Thursday, July 05, 2007 10:49:28 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
We take turns blogging and Thursdays are usually Christy’s day. But as you may recall, she’s currently 10,000 miles away from home in Mamelodi, South Africa, on a mission trip with her church.
She’s on my mind constantly—I pray for her safety and that her experiences are life affirming for her and the people she meets there in S. Africa.
Before Christy left, she packed up a stuffed animal she and I kept on the cubicle wall between our desks. It’s a soft turtle, given to me by another dear friend as a reminder that slow and steady wins the race (and to apply that same principle to my cancer challenge). Christy named the turtle Africa long before she left on her trip, and we laughed that she could take photos of Africa (the turtle) all over Mamelodi. Kind of like the traveling gnome! I created this layout in preparation of a picture of Africa and Christy in Mamelodi. I can’t wait to hear all her stories and to welcome her home after her amazing adventures.
Peace and love, Patty

Scrapbooking For Charity
Monday, July 02, 2007 1:37:52 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I recently received an e-mail from Linda Woods, one of the authors of Visual Chronicles, about a great scrapbooking charity event that's happening in July, and I wanted to share the details with all of you.

Event Details:

The July 14 event is to benefit The John Tracy Clinic, a non-profit organization that provides free services to families of children with hearing loss.

The event will consist of three classes, three meals, a welcome kit, a goodie bag filled with scrapbooking products, prizes and a silent auction that will include handmade items.

The event classes are being offered by Linda Woods and Karen Dinino, the authors of the best-selling book Visual Chronicles and the soon-to-be released Journal Revolution (both published by North Light Books), Suzi Finer (Happily Ever Crafter, North Light Books 2008) and Elena Etcheverry of Scrapbook Royalty.

Linda told me that she and Karen will be teaching their Personal Palette project, which appears in Visual Chronicles.

(On a side note: I have a copy of the book, and I'm currently putting my own Personal Palette together. I'm having fun picking colors to match my moods, the important people in my life, different aspects of my personality, special memories, etc. The great thing about making a Personal Palette is that you can keep adding to it, and the collection will spark ideas again and again. I've been making a list of everything I want to represent in my palette, such as my love for pasta, the beloved dog I had growing up, my very loud laugh, the soothing sound of rain (which always relaxes me) and so on. I've also been trying to decide what color represents "me" in general, and I'm leaning toward a bright, vibrant pink or a saturated grape purple.

(Color swatches downloaded from Resene Paints.)

For more information about the charity event and to register, visit www.scrapbookroyalty.com.

I'd also like to wish all of you a very happy Fourth of July. (And don't forget to take part in our Fourth of July Challenge!)

All the best,

Katie

Let Freedom Ring
Friday, June 29, 2007 11:22:44 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Have you ever pursued a goal, only to have your efforts fall through when you were just on the brink of success? That’s what happened to Katie Watson.

She created a winning layout for Memory Makers’ July Reader Idea Gallery, gathered all the necessary forms and information and mailed everything to our office in plenty of time. Somehow the package arrived late. Way late. Past our photography date late. Through no fault of her own, her layout—perfect for the Fourth of July--missed the July issue.

That’s why I have the privilege of including Katie’s layout, The Good Ole USA in my blog.

KWatsonUSA1.jpgHere’s what Katie has to say about her page:
“At the time I took this photo of my daughter and nieces, my husband was deployed in Iraq. The war had just started, and I vividly remember looking at these four precious little girls who I love so much and silently thanking my husband for his sacrifice. Four reasons to keep this country free.”

As the United States’ Independence Day approaches, I review mental snapshots of how I’ve celebrated over the years—weaving red, white and blue crepe-paper strips into bike spokes, waving flags and sparklers, chomping into watermelon, picnicking with friends and relatives, and, best of all, watching fireworks.

How frustrating that fireworks, the most spectacular part of Fourth of July celebrations, should be so tricky to photograph. Not to worry. Here are tips on digital fireworks photography from MalekTips.com.

Whether you live in the United States or not, I hope you enjoy the freedom to pursue happiness, follow your deepest beliefs and express yourself. Why not exercise that last freedom by sharing thoughts about your homeland or memories of a patriotic celebration.

I'm Vanilla
Friday, June 29, 2007 9:14:04 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Took the icecream.com challenge mentioned in Katie's blog yesterday, and it turns out I'm vanilla (Although if peanut butter chip had been a choice, that would have been me!). I like vanilla because it's versatile and goes well with just about everything ... pie, cake, shortcake ... mmmm, I'm getting hungry now!

Vanilla:
There is nothing plain about vanilla. In fact, if you love vanilla, you are actually a colorful, dramatic risk taker who relies more on intuition than logic. Emotionally expressive and idealistic, you tend to set high goals for yourself, and push yourself to meet and exceed them. On the romantic front, you tend to rely on secure romantic relationships that fulfill your emotional needs while working toward future objectives.

What flavor are you? Have a scoop or two this weekend to start off National Ice Cream Month in good taste! (And, no, we're not getting a kickback from the National Dairy Association!)

Have a great weekend!

Best,
Beth

July 2007 Issue
Thursday, June 28, 2007 5:49:12 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
JULY cover_final_175.jpg

So, this is a little later than promised...but here I am to discuss our July 2007 issue, which went on sale June 19.

Pg. 2.
Like last month, I love Executive Editor Beth Williams' Top Ten Corner. I especially like it because she mentions Diet Coke. Twice. At most meetings, we can both be seen with our cans of Diet Coke. (Anyone else out there a devoted Diet Coke fan? And although this has nothing to do with the July issue, has anyone tried the new Diet Coke Plus? I have not, but I'm skeptical and unsure if it can hold up to the greatness of the original Diet Coke.)

Pg. 19
Remember our Win a Dream Scrapbooking Year Sweepstakes? You can read about our winner, Olivia Sullivan, in July's Scraphappenings section.

Also in the July Scraphappenings, you'll find some great summer prompts. For example: National Ice Cream Month. "If you could be an ice cream flavor, which flavor would you choose? Why?" (If I could be an ice cream flavor, I think I'd be Mint Chocolate Chip.)

According to icecream.com, this is what my mint-chocolate chip preference says about me:

"As a Mint Chocolate Chip lover, you tend to be ambitious and confident… yet a little skeptical about life. You are a realist who prepares for the future, needing a solid plan to feel secure. While your stubbornness is a business asset, it can add a challenging element to your relationships. Nonetheless, your loyalty, honesty and dependability create lasting friendships and close family ties."

What about all of you? Leave comments and let me know what your ice-cream personality is, or even just what your favorite flavor is.

Pg. 48
Who isn't looking to save time? "Map & Go" by Becky Fleck is a great resource for busy scrappers. Becky shows how using page maps can not only save you time but can boost your creativity, as well.

Pg. 83
Have you ever wondered what makes a layout coverworthy? Check out "Got It Covered" to find out.

Pg. 89
As a food lover, I adore the "A Taste of Summer" feature. I find it so inspiring to see the kinds of everyday things that can influence our creativity.

When I think of foods that remind me of summer, I think of deviled eggs. (I realize that might sound odd.) My grandmother makes THE BEST deviled eggs, though, and every summer, she makes them multiple times, so I can enjoy them at all of our family picnics. (I'll be with family on the 4th, and she's already promised to make them for me!) This got me thinking about the color palette for a deviled eggs-inspired page: If I were to create a page, like those featured in "A Taste of Summer," I'd use a light, creamy, golden yellow, a bright white and spicy reds and oranges to match the color of paprika.

Pg. 96
"Sarah's Story" by Karen Wilson-Bonnar, is a beautiful layout with lovely journaling that touched all of us at the office. It's a great example of how to tell a story with memorable photos, eye-catching design and heartfelt words.

Pg. 118
I also found myself incredibly inspired after reading Sandra Magsamen's Artful Memories piece. Her writing is warm and encouraging, and it always soothes my creative soul. July's column, about attitude, is no different. It's full of great ideas like making a list of projects you want to do (a great scrapbook page idea!) and using found object art to make something that is precious to you.

A few questions for all of you:

1. What was your favorite article or column of this issue?
2. What layout in the magazine do you think you are most likely to scraplift?

Happy reading! I can't wait to hear your thoughts.

10,000 Scrapbookers All in One Place ... Whew!
Wednesday, June 27, 2007 11:30:56 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Hi! I was going to video blog about my thoughts and experiences at GASC Arlington from earlier this month, but at the rate I'm going, it will be November before I put voice and video together!

So, before any more time passes me by, I'm just going the "old-fashioned" route and posting some photos of this really cool event.

The Great American Scrapbook Conventions are a sister event for Memory Makers, hosted by our parent company, F+W Publications. This year's GASC sites are in Arlington, Texas; Chantilly, Virginia; and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

So, how to describe my first GASC? The official take is that "GASC is a fun-filled event of more than 10,000 scrapbook enthusiasts over several days and nights. GASC is a great place for scrapbookers to reconnect with
friends, make new friends, learn new skills and techniques, recharge their creative batteries and get inspired by thousands of other scrapbookers."

My unofficial take? GASC is W-I-L-D! I've never seen so many like-minded people of all different ages and backgrounds and so into their passion/hobby ... all in one place! It was incredibly exciting.

Shopping, make & takes, workshops and cropping parties are core to GASC, not to mention food, laughter, creativity, and lots of adhesive and embellishments!

Most of the time, I was working the general admission booth or in the back room prepping goodie bags for the evening cropping parties, which was great.
DSC07584.JPG
Still, I was itching to get onto the showroom floor to ooh and ahh over aisle upon aisle of scrapbooking goodness, and I did, but just for short bouts of time. Maybe it's just as well, as I wouldn't have been able to fit everything I wanted into my suitcase!

DSC07614.JPG I also wanted to "audit" a few of the workshops. They were in big demand, though, often selling out. There were so many awesome classes featuring digital techniques, photography tips and tricks, 2-page layout designs, home décor, theme albums and tool techniques, to name just a few. And, experts in the field teach the workshops, including our very own 2007 Memory Makers Masters Crystal Jeffrey Rieger. Ronee Parsons and Hillary Heidelberg. We were so busy that Crystal and I didn't even cross paths until we were waiting for the airport shuttle Sunday morning!

And, don't even get me started on the cropping parties. Two crops are held each evening ... a digital DSC07526.JPGcrop and a traditional crop. More than 500 scrapbookers attend each traditional crop, and they line up for an hour or two before the cropping party doors even open. Talk about enthusiastic!

There's something awesome and awe-inspiring about seeing all the creativity in one place ... watching mothers, daughters, best friends, sisters, grandmas and -- even coolor, the occasional dads and brothers! -- all working on memory making and having a blast. I love that this
hobby/craft/calling/art form ... whatever it means for each person... brings so many people together in such a positive way.

Next year, I'll be reserving a space at a scrap table! I wanna get in on the fun!

Best,
Beth

We're Listening!
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 2:11:13 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Thanks to all of you who participated in the October cover test. All the votes are currently being tallied. Word on the street is that we had close to 10,000 votes...that's about twice as many votes as the last couple cover tests. The editorial team is also sorting through all the great feedback you gave us about color, readability, photography... I am in the process of incorporating a lot of your suggestions into the covers. Thanks for contributing to the success of the magazine. Your feedback is taken to heart as we continue to create an inspiring magazine that is tailored just for you.

Didn't get a chance to vote? Make sure you sign up for the e-newsletter to make sure you get in on the next cover test!

I am heading off to South Africa on Thursday! I am bursting with joy and excitement, but also a little nervous about the 18-hour flight. I am almost finished packing my ONE suitcase. One suitcase is kind of hard to pack for 10 days. I keep overanalyzing what I need and don't need.

I'll be sure to share some of my experiences with you when I get back. Until then...

Blessings,
Christy

How fearless are you?
Monday, June 25, 2007 3:36:18 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
With the Sanskrit word fearlessness permanently tattooed on the inside of my right wrist, I’m reminded daily to make choices out of love not fear. (There’s a topic for a future blog: my belief that we either operate from a platform of fear or love.)

I’ve been letting my fear of creating something hideous stop me from doodling on my layouts. My inner artist felt paralyzed—I needed some love to set her free! So this weekend the art gods must’ve been smiling on me, for I had the courage to take the leap of faith and doodle on my LO—and had a ball doing it.

blog625.jpgMy dear friend Erin turns 39 this week and this is her cyber birthday card. (E: The years look great on you, little sister. Don’t forget: 40 is the new 30, and you’re not even there yet!)

I used patterned paper with a floral design that provided a sort of doodling template. There are a couple spots I’m not thrilled with, but in the overall I quite like the finished product.

What are you avoiding creatively because you’re afraid it will be less than perfect? Post your fears here (I check back often to see what y’all have to say). Or better yet, face that fear head-on and create a LO.

Peace and love,
     Patty

p.s. Journaling says: Love you like a sister! happy birthday june 2007

'Tis a Gift to Be Simple
Friday, June 22, 2007 1:08:53 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Clock_s.jpgLately my daily affairs leave me feeling like this clock--ticking along, colorless, frayed around the edges, always five minutes from the next deadline. That's no way to live.

I would commit myself to some fun activity, but that would just add another commitment. Fortunately, there's another approach.

Years ago I read a list of daily activities that give people the most pleasure. Among the top ten were getting the mail, taking a shower, reading the newspaper--simple things that most of us do on a daily basis.

I enjoy sipping a morning cup of coffee, looking at the sky, hearing about my husband and daughter's day, flopping on the couch after dinner, stroking my cats and reading in bed for five minutes just before turning off the light. These are also my daily affairs, and they present a much more attractive picture than the dull, gray clock.

What are the most pleasurable parts of your days? I'd really like to know--and if you've ever scrapped them, share your page, too. I'm sure we could all use reminders of life's simple pleasures.
