Get It Scrapped: Thanksgiving
12/2/2008 11:54:28 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

After returning from my Thanksgiving trip out of town, I set about creating a layout that documented the bits and pieces I wanted to remember. While out of town, I visited a very cool papercrafting store and found the gold cardstock. As soon as I spotted it, I knew I had to use it for a Thanksgiving layout. Later, I saw Master '09 Vee Jennings' Cherish layout on her blog and was further inspired.

So, I created Giving Thanks. To get the journaling done quickly, I used a list format. (For more ideas on how to get your stories recorded, check out the book Your Words, Your Story by Michele Skinner.)

My photos didn't print well, but I embraced their flaws and scrapped them anyway because I wanted to create a page before I moved on to scrapping the holidays and other new memories. (For helpful hints on scrapping even your flawed photos, check out the book When Life Gives You Lemons by Sherry Steveson.)

I kept the embellishments simple and used coordinating products from Sassafras Lass' two Life is Beautiful collections (the die-cut paper strip, letter stickers and chipboard woodgrain heart). I fell in love with these collections the minute I saw them because they combine one of my favorite trends—woodgrain—with cute, whimsical embellishments, letter stickers and patterned papers.

Other supplies used: Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist and tiny letter stickers from Making Memories

How are your Thanksgiving layouts coming together?

—Katie

More Fun Holiday Projects + Inspiration
11/7/2008 1:47:09 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

Like Katie, visions of holiday décor have been dancing in my head.  And it all started with some free downloadable inspiration at Amy Butler Designs.

What struck me most about Amy’s beautiful holiday crafts was the unexpected color scheme: shades of blue and green.  I’m not such a fan of red, and my home is spotted with sage and sky, so it was nice to see an example of holiday cheer in nontraditional colors. Inspired by Amy’s organic, natural holiday décor style, I created this hybrid layout to hang in my living room:

(Digital paper and flower embellishment from the new Philisophie kit by Paislee Press. Tiny alphas from Making Memories. Chipboard alphas, ribbon from American Crafts. Dead Secretary, Cricket fonts from scrapvillage.com.)

I recently went on an Internet treasure hunt for all sorts of holiday paper goodies, and it turns out that nontraditional holiday style is quite the trend.  Here are some of my favorites finds:

1. Happy Holidays rub-ons from Fancy Pants. 2. Two Front Teeth paper from American Crafts Christmas 2008 collection. 3. Letterpress holiday card from etsy seller paperedtogether. 4. Oliver Road paper from Scenic Route Garland Holiday collection. 5. Reindeer Games paper from American Crafts Christmas 2008 collection. 6. Letterpress holiday card from etsy seller YeeHaw. 7. Holiday card design featured on Print + Pattern. 8. Letterpress holiday card from etsy seller afavorite. 9. Once Upon a Christmas digital kit by Emily Merritt and Designs by Lili at We Are Storytellers.

(Photo mosaic made here.)

If your home décor is yellow or blue, your style is funky or modern, or you just want to try something new, kick out of the typical holiday hues box: try raspberry and lime, gold and gray, orange and ivory, or whatever else strikes your fancy.

Let us know what's your holiday decorating wish list and leave a comment on this post.

Happy Friday!
Kristin

Holiday Projects + Inspiration
11/6/2008 9:47:56 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

Lately, visions of holiday decorations have been dancing in my head.

I've been seeing holiday inspiration everywhere—from blogs and Web sites, to store decorations and even Starbuck's holiday marketing campaign. (This morning, when I picked up my skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte, I noticed they were using their holiday cups, which are even an inspiration!) I love the smudgy white designs on the red textured background.

So, of course, with all of this inspiration, I had to make something! I created Tidings of Comfort + Joy after being inspired by the Peace on Earth graphic. I found the Peace on Earth project on Amy Butler's Web site. You can find that project and other free downloadable projects, here.

I plan to use my design on my holiday cards this year and as a wall decoration. I haven't decided on a size yet, but once I do, I will print the design and frame it.

supplies used: Patterned papers (Corina Nielsen, download the FREE kit here) • Leaf accents (Tutti Frutti Kit by Emily Powers and Paislee Press) • Word art (Philosophie, by Paislee Press).

Read Christy's latest blog entry to learn more about the Philosophie kit and to find out where and when you'll be able to buy it.

I LOVE the word art created by Paislee Press. Here are a few word art kits to check out:

What are your holiday decorating plans this year? Are you making cards to send to family and friends?

Be sure to check back tomorrow. MM Books Editor Kristin Boys will stop in to share more holiday decorating ideas.

Happy crafting!

Katie

Ideas for scrapbooking baby
10/16/2008 9:55:53 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
It’s October 16, so you’d think I’d have fall or Halloween on the brain.  Nope. It’s babies on the brain around here!  I have a sweet baby niece, a friend whose water just broke, plus a baby shower for three coworkers in the works. Oh, baby!

Whether you have babies on the brain, too, or just want some adorable ideas, check out my current baby-related favorites:

Fancy Pants Designs is retiring several of their kits, so they’re on sale! This soft and sweet Crush kit (below, left) would be perfect for baby girl projects.

It seems to be easier to find feminine embellishments than ones for boys. But the adorable chipboard and plastic animals from American Crafts' Treehouse collection (above, right) are perfectly suited for adorable baby boys pages.

Instead of congrats cards, why not make a new mom a little brag book? This sturdy  album I made about my niece tucks into a mint tin and is small enough to fit inside a purse for sharing at a moment’s notice:

And for tons of precious, adorable lovable ideas for scrapbooking baby pages, get a copy of Oh, Baby!

Happy Thursday,
Kristin

Fall Layout Goodies
10/9/2008 11:19:56 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I love the new Falling Leaves kit by Two Sisters Designs.
Supplies: Falling Leaves kit, paint accents (Two Sisters Designs, Wearestorytellers.com)

And check out this adorable owl patterned paper from the kit:

Isn't it so much fun? I love the patterns and colors in this kit!

And the last fall goodie I have to share today is a card that's in progress:

About a month ago, I started creating this card using a template from Emily Merritt's Once Upon A Dream kit. I might use it as an invite to a little autumn party: apple cider, pumpkin pie, fall movies. Speaking of, do you have any fall movie recommendations?

And how are your fall layouts coming along? I'd love to see what you've been making. Share your artwork, here.

Wishing you all a happy Thursday!

Katie

a few of my favorite things ...
10/8/2008 9:21:44 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Graphic 45 paper:
I've never really been drawn to vintage papers until I came across Graphic 45 (I'm a contemporary and minimalist kind of girl). The colors, collage and layered look, and vintage feel make all their collections SO yummy!

American Crafts clear back letter stickers:
I love how these stickers are easy to peel off and work with. They have unique font choices too! (the photo shows the Chloe font). I love how they don't look like stickers when I adhere them to a project.

These two products made a simple and lovely birthday card for a dear friend.

My newest favorite thing is photography. I mean, I've always loved it, but I have been spending more time lately learning more about the technical side and taking lots more photos. Luke and I got our wedding photos back last weekend and every time I look through them I remember why I love photography so much ...

... It's moments like this, with my dad, that I want to vividly remember. The photo tells the whole story; the time of day, the occasion ... and by our expressions i can still feel the emotions i felt that moment every time i look at the photo. I believe it's why I love to scrapbook too, it captures all those beautiful memories I want to always hold close to my heart.

Playing With Paint Digitally
9/9/2008 9:57:25 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I was inspired by Contributing Editor Emily Powers' blog yesterday. I use paint on almost all of my traditional pages, so I was excited to try painting in the digital realm.

To create my I Love Local Cafes page, I used the Artist's Canvas kit by Two Sisters Design and had fun customizing the paint accents for my page. (And bonus that I could use any color I could dream up!) Quick, easy and no mess!

Supplies: Backward staple (Emily Powers, wearestorytellers.com) • Paint accents, journaling block (Two Sisters Design, wearestorytellers.com) • Patterned paper (Kathryn Wilson, wearestorytellers.com) • Letters (Angela Powers, Emily Powers, wearestorytellers.com)

Creative Prompt: Play with paint this week—either traditionally or digitally. Post your finished pages and projects, here. I'll pick one or two to feature next week right here in the blog and in our weekly e-newsletter.

Painting Without the Mess
9/8/2008 1:47:49 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Do you love adding paint to your layouts, but hate the mess?

When I want to add paint to an art project, I have to drag out all of my supplies, set my three-year-old up with her own painting station and then the clean-up...oh! I might as well just break out the hose. Somehow, even our dogs get paint in their fur.

I often invite the mess in the name of creativity, but sometimes I'm short on time and patience. That's when I reach for my one-stop-digi-art-supply-shop. My sister, Angela, and I created The Artist's Canvas for digtal and hybrid artists. It's filled with art strokes, marks, splats, lines, overlays, borders and corners.

Here's a layout I created for the Hodge Podge Challenge that is full of digital paint! Quick, easy and NO MESS!

CREDITS: Anchors Away by Emily Powers, Emily Merritt and Tiff Brady. Scrap Stash: Chipboard by Two Sisters Designs. Acrylic Stickers 1 by Emily Powers. The Artist's Canvas by Two Sisters Designs. Life Snip Stickers (from a variety of kits and element packs) by Emily Powers. Deco Borders by Emily Powers. Snapshots Frames by Paislee Press. Alphabet Soup: Acrylic by Emily Powers. Art Nation: Blossom by Emily Powers. Fonts: Pea Cammi-Pea, CK Painterly.

If you are a hybrid scrapper, you could add paint to a piece of digital paper and print. Then you could add your photo, journaling and paper elements in the traditional manner.

You can also find a great FREE paint font here.

Grace and Peace,

Emily Powers

Emily is a freelance artist and photographer from northeast Ohio. She is a 2009 Contributing Editor to Memory Makers Magazine. She's married to her high school sweetheart and has a three-year-old daughter and three furry children.

Creativity Prompt: Currently
9/4/2008 9:51:34 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Inspired by Master '09 Anabelle O'Malley's Currently layout and Master '09 Ronda Palazzari's Who R You layout, I created the above layout, also called Currently.

As Anabelle mentioned in her blog, I too, enjoy creating layouts that capture current likes, feelings, etc. They're so much fun to read even just a year later.

Creative Prompt: Create a "Currently" layout of your own.

Journaling reads: I am: writing regularly, reading a lot of memoirs, hopeful, anticipating fall, craving hot apple cider, inspired, thankful, wondering what my 25th year will bring, looking to compile a fall reading list; Loving: Ann Taylor Loft, houndstooth, the color plum, mint chocolate chip soy ice cream, Cranergy juice, Noodles & Co.'s Pesto Cavatappi, Jon + Kate Plus 8, Bethany Dillon, The David Crowder Band. 9-3-08

Supplies: Cardstock (WorldWin) • Fla!r buttons, stickers (American Crafts) • Glimmer Mist (Tattered Angels) • Letters (American Crafts, Making Memories) • Printer (Epson R1900)

I love American Craft's new Moda Bella collection. They describe it as follows: Modern design meets bohemian style in Moda Bella, our newest collection of patterned paper. Inspired by fashion classics and unique designs, Moda Bella is a bright solution for any project or page.

I love the bright, fun colors and the Fla!r button accents. And aren't the Puffy Thickers adorable?

I love letter stickers and used my other favorite on this page: the Tiny Alphas by Making Memories. I simple adore these teeny letters. They're perfect for any project or page.

And about my current search for a fall reading list (see bold portion of journaling above): I would love it if you all posted your recommendations, below—both fiction and nonfiction would be much appreciated!

Wishing you a happy Thursday!

Katie
