You're Invited to a Play Date
9/5/2008 11:03:52 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) We’re big fans of Kelly Rae Robert’s new book Taking Flight (2008, North Light Books). It’s part workbook, part inspiration and just darn gorgeous! Earlier this week Katie, Beth and I had a Taking Flight play date. We set aside an hour to see what we’d come up with if we pulled out some supplies and Kelly Rae’s book. Here are a few shots. I was striving to create something that WASN’T clean and classic in style or all goodness and light. (I just seem to start out wanting to do something funky and before I know it all my papers are frilly and girly.) I’m satisfied with what I created—a small affirmation plaque that says I Come In Peace (on the left, leaning against Buddha's belly). Katie's I Dwell In Possibility affirmation (on the right, against Buddha) makes me happy, too. Where do you turn for creative inspiration? Peace & love, Patty P.S. from Beth: While hugely inspired by Kelly Rae (love that girl!), I wasn't in a creative mood and just doodled during our play date. Still, it was fun to just daydream and take flight mentally! creative prompt | layout inspiration

Creativity Prompt: Currently
9/4/2008 9:51:34 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Inspired by Master '09 Anabelle O'Malley's Currently layout and Master '09 Ronda Palazzari's Who R You layout, I created the above layout, also called Currently. As Anabelle mentioned in her blog, I too, enjoy creating layouts that
capture current likes, feelings, etc. They're so much fun to read even
just a year later.
Creative Prompt: Create a "Currently" layout of your own. Journaling reads: I am: writing regularly, reading a lot of memoirs, hopeful, anticipating fall, craving hot apple cider, inspired, thankful, wondering what my 25th year will bring, looking to compile a fall reading list; Loving: Ann Taylor Loft, houndstooth, the color plum, mint chocolate chip soy ice cream, Cranergy juice, Noodles & Co.'s Pesto Cavatappi, Jon + Kate Plus 8, Bethany Dillon, The David Crowder Band. 9-3-08 Supplies: Cardstock (WorldWin) • Fla!r buttons, stickers (American Crafts) • Glimmer Mist (Tattered Angels) • Letters (American Crafts, Making Memories) • Printer (Epson R1900) I love American Craft's new Moda Bella collection. They describe it as follows: Modern design meets bohemian style in Moda Bella, our newest collection
of patterned paper. Inspired by fashion classics and unique designs,
Moda Bella is a bright solution for any project or page. I love the bright, fun colors and the Fla!r button accents. And aren't the Puffy Thickers adorable? I love letter stickers and used my other favorite on this page: the Tiny Alphas by Making Memories. I simple adore these teeny letters. They're perfect for any project or page. And about my current search for a fall reading list (see bold portion of journaling above): I would love it if you all posted your recommendations, below—both fiction and nonfiction would be much appreciated! Wishing you a happy Thursday! Katie creative prompt | layout inspiration | products we're loving

Using Digital Elements in a Traditional Way
8/7/2008 9:58:02 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) As I was printing off some photos last night at my local grocery store, I realized that for only 29 cents I could print off some digital papers and also add them to my traditional pages. I wrote my journaling on the photograph of some digital paper with a slick writer from American Crafts. I also printed digital paper for the flower embellishment background and the title. Check my supply list below to see where I got these great digi finds. How will you merge your growing digital supplies with your traditional ones?
Supplies: Adhesive (SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES BY 3L) • Digital overlay (Emily Powers, wearestorytellers.com) • Digital patterned papers (Storyteller Essentials v.1 Bundle, WST Artists, wearestorytellers.com; Summer Time Kit, Michelle Coleman, littledreamerdesigns.com) • Epoxy letters (Li'l Davis) • Felt flower and frame, patterned papers (Fancy Pants Designs) • Flower embellishments, pen, vinyl letters (American Crafts) • Letter stickers, journaling spot (Making Memories) • Misc.: brad, corkboard contact paper, flower button Create something. Multi-photo Layout
8/4/2008 2:43:15 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) My dad RARELY allows anyone to take his picture. He normally puts his hands in front of his face or does something equally frustrating. So, when I snapped these silly pictures at my sister's cotillion, I couldn't wait to scrap them.
Idea: Use a series of photos to tell a story or show someone's personality. The series of photos I used clearly shows my dad's playful nature and his aversion to taking a "normal" photograph.
supplies: Adhesive (Tombow) • Border strips, epoxy stickers, rubber accents (KI Memories) • Letters (American Crafts) • Misc.: acrylic paint, kraft cardstock

How to Use Packaging in a Creative Way
7/18/2008 10:52:48 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I love finding new uses for items that might normally be thrown away. In this layout, I used packaging from Fancy Pants Designs and Making Memories as embellishments. I cut off the scalloped edge of the Fancy Pants packaging and inked it with a brown ink. I used the top of the packaging from Making Memories' Noteworthy collection and inked the edges in blue. I also found this little brown notebook with paper samples on our the bistro here at work. I cut out the three holes and used the paper samples to show some of the reasons why I love Zach's heart.
(F.Y.I. The bistro counter is the place where people leave objects they no longer need or want in our office. It could be anything from food to free books and magazines. It's important to pass by the bistro several times a day to check out the goods.)
Look around your house and see if there's anything that can be salvaged and used on your next scrapbooking project. Hope you're inspired to create something this weekend and turn your trash into something you'll treasure. Create something. Inspire everyone. Fourth of July Layout
7/14/2008 9:57:48 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Have you scrapped your Fourth of July memories yet? On Saturday, I created this hybrid page to document a lovely dinner and trip to the fireworks with Art Director Christy Miller. (I apologize for the slightly crooked scan of this page.) I used the I Am Free kit by Emily Powers, which is chock full of digital elements that have a great textured look. I especially enjoyed using the paint and torn kraft paper elements, as those are often staples on paper layouts I create. Lately, I've been loving the time-saving nature of hybrid layouts. For this page, I mounted my 10x10 digital page on notebook patterned paper from KI Memories. I added staples (because I like the look of staples but also because I ran out of my Tombow adhesive while scrapping this page). Then, I added the white glitter chipboard letters and accents from American Crafts. Final step: Adding the date stamp in the upper, right corner, which is quickly becoming a constant on my pages. After admiring Kal Barteski's use of the date stamp, I've become quite fond of the smudgy, imperfect look it leaves on my pages. (I also appreciate her bulletproof postive attitude. What a great way to create!) Have a great Monday! —Katie (And if you've created any Fourth of July layouts, share them with us here.) hybrid layout designed with the fabulous Tutti Frutti digital kit
7/9/2008 9:14:15 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Last week Katie posted a creative prompt titled "I Am..."I really had no idea how to finish that sentence because I feel like I am so many things at this point in my life. I decided to design a hybrid layout that allowed plenty of journaling space to detail my life as it is right this moment. I LOVE this digital kit ( Tutti Frutti) by Emily Powers and Paislee Press. Isn't it so cute!?! The colors and patterns are wonderful and the embellishments can be used in so many ways. After I designed the layout I printed it on our Epson R1900 for a gorgeous print, then mounted it to orange cardstock then a piece of 12x12 blue cardstock. Using my new scallop shears (that I absolutely love) I cut around the blue cardstock to get a clean, scalloped edge. I added ribbon, bling, and KI softies, button findings and felt embellishments to add a little dimension to the page. creative prompt | Digital Scrapbooking | hybrid scrapbooking | layout inspiration | Photo Printing

Creative Prompt: I Am
6/30/2008 11:51:13 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Creative Prompt: I Am. Interpret this prompt any way you wish. You might want to share your different roles (mother, sister, best friend … ), what you’re doing on a particular day (a slice-of-life focus), how you’re feeling when creating the page, plans for your future, etc. i am (becoming more me every day)supplies: Adhesive (Tombow) • Acrylic accents, paint (Making Memories) • Chipboard, button, rubber photo corners (KI Memories) • Letter stickers (KI Memories, Making Memories) • Patterned paper (K&Co.) • Pen (American Crafts) • Stamp (7gypsies) • Text card (Moo) • Misc.: date stamp, ink, staple For my I Am page, I chose to focus on the ways we’re always changing and growing. My journaling shares some areas of growth in my life at the moment, such as making time for one of my hobbies (creative writing) by joining a writing group and reaching out to my community by searching for volunteer opportunities. Instead of keeping my journaling together in one block, I broke it up by writing on the following surfaces: on chipboard accents, directly on the patterned paper and inside a journaling block stamp. Additional notes about my page:• I used products from more than five manufacturers (which is the June Master's Challenge prompt). And even though the month of June is quickly coming to a close, check out the thread in the forum for inspiration and to share your own layout that showcases products from five or more manufacturers. • To make the second part of my title stand out (the word becoming), I painted on the patterned paper and outlined and doodled on my letter stickers. If you take part in this creative prompt, please post your layouts in our Online Idea Gallery. (Be sure to specify that you participated in this prompt.) I can't wait to see what you come up with and how you interpret the theme I Am. All the best, Katie creative prompt | layout inspiration

short on time? try hybrid scrapbooking
6/27/2008 9:58:04 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I will admit that when digital scrapbooking became an option, I was less than impressed with the digital projects out there. I thought that there was no way to get a layout that compared to the look and feel of paper scrapping. And then I found several designers whose work I fell in love with and who never disappointment me with their selection of digital products. Once I started getting into a groove, digital scrapbooking became fun and a much faster way to get my photos and layouts in albums with less mess. I guess I should mention it makes my piggy bank happy too :) I still love getting out all my supplies and painting, ripping paper and creating layouts with real texture (I still do this often), but hybrid scrapping is splitting equal time with paper scrapping these days. I took some pictures last weekend and created a layout with one of the photos. I used Little Dreamer Designs Summer Time digital kit to create a 10"x10" layout. After designing the layout on the computer, I printed it using our Epson R1900 Photo printer and mounted it to a blue piece of cardstock that coordinated with the layout. Here are the areas that I added embellishments:• The rays of the sun are ribbon. • I added buttons to frame the smaller photo. • There is bling on the small flowers and on the large flower. • I added stickers letters on the big flower to spell out the name of the little boy. • There is a brad in the corner of the large photo. • Dimensional glue outlines the waves on the bottom of the layout. • A felt button is glued in the center of the small yellow flower. I got the best of both scrapping worlds with this layout: I got to play with my supplies to add dimension, while getting to play with some really cool digital embellishments and paper. I love having the option of hybrid scrapping when there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day! Have you tried hybrid scrapping? back to basics: paper and scissors
6/13/2008 9:12:04 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I love digital and hybrid scrapbooking because it's fast, less mess, and I can take my computer anywhere to do it. But, when I haven't worked with paper, scissors, and my Tombo Mono Adhesive (I LOVE this stuff) in a while I start to experience some serious withdrawal symptoms :) There is just something so different about tearing paper, layering embellishments, adding dimension, painting, etc. My cousin just had a beautiful baby girl about 2 months ago. I haven't had the chance to meet her, but will see her at the wedding in a couple of months. I couldn't wait to create a layout about little Bella. I was also excited because this is my first baby page. Talk about breaking out of my traditional patterns and colors. It was tough going through my supplies to find that I barely had anything pink and yellow or for babies. I normally love to do multi-photo layouts, but my focus was to make this more of a home decor project for my cousin. It would be so adorable in a 12x12 shadow box in the baby's room. I made little pockets at the bottom of the layout with three journaling prompts so that the happy parents could write little notes to Bella. They read 1.) We love your... 2.) You make us... 3.) We hope & pray... This layout took me about 30 minutes. My main techniques were layering paper, ribbon, and embellishments. I gave the layout added dimension by adding thick pop dots behind the photo to lift it off the page. Happy Friday and have a wonderful weekend! winner will receive a Making Memories’ prize package of the new
Noteworthy Collection, and will be announced on the morning of Tuesday, June 3, 2008
in the forum. Make sure to check out Making Memories’ blog for additional product information and inspiration. I was so inspired by the colors and patterns of this line, I couldn't wait to create a layout with this collection. It can fit every style from clean and classic to graphic and trendy. I played off of the briliant colors in this collection by adding text to my pictures in Photoshop that matched the colors in the line. Tip:In order to get a cropped image with text to print at any photo lab, open up a blank white document in photoshop that is 4x6 and 300 dpi. Place your cropped picture on the white background and add the text you want. After you've added text, flatten your image and print it off at any photo lab. This is will ensure that cropped photos will not be stretched into a 4x6 photo format. Supplies: All patterned paper and embellishments were from the Noteworthy line. Layout Inspiration + An Easy How-to
5/27/2008 10:47:29 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I spent much of my long weekend crafting. I enjoyed using Making
Memories' new Noteworthy collection on the Coffee Talk layout below. Like what you see? Tomorrow, you'll have
a chance to enter a contest to win your own set of Noteworthy supplies. I love all of the scalloped shapes, acrylic accents and bright colors, and everything coordinates so well. Layout tip: Use acrylic paint to add texture to pages. Using a foam make-up sponge, I quickly swiped white acyrlic paint on the Noteworthy patterned paper. A few quick swipes set the stage for my title, and the paint was a great contrast to the glitter title letters. Supplies: Acrylic embellishments, letter stickers, patterned paper, metal accent (Making Memories) • Journaling spots (Every Jot and Tittle) • Word stickers (KI Memories) • Misc.: acrylic paint, date stamp, staples How-to: Make Your Own Painted Paper Accent
On the Collage layout above, I created a painted paper accent to anchor my photos and embellishments to the page. We used this technique in my collage class to create a variety of layers for our collages. Here's how:1. Tear or cut a piece of watercolor paper to the size and shape you want. 2. Coat the paper in gesso (I used Liquitex Basics). To create texture, use a liberal amount of gesso and spread it around the paper with a paint brush or your fingers to create ridges, circular shapes, lines, etc. (You also can use a pen to draw shapes in the wet gesso, or use other objects, such as the lid of a jar, to create shapes and textures.) 3. Let the paper dry completely. 4. Paint the gessoed paper with the acrylic paint of your choice. 5. Let dry. 6. Place your painted paper accent on the page. I created the text cards (Grow, Inspire, Create) at Moo.com. I enjoyed being able to personalize the cards, using words, phrases, colors and fonts of my choice. They have a variety of colors and fonts to choose from on the site, and you also can create mini-cards using photos. You can check both products out at Moo.com. supplies: Bird accents (me & my BiG ideas) • Epoxy stickers (KI Memories) • Patterned paper (October Afternoon) • Journaling spot (Luxe Designs) • Letter stickers (Li'l Davis) • Text cards (Moo.com) • Word stickers (K&Co.) • Misc.: acrylic paint, gesso, watercolor paper, staples How did you spend your weekend? Painting Technique
5/22/2008 1:38:25 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) On an earlier entry, I posted this creative prompt in response to a question posed by one of our forum members. The creative prompt of the week is use a tool that you own, but have never used more than a handful of times.
This is the layout I created based on the prompt. I used our Cricut machine in the office, because I had never tried to use it before. We just recently received some of the new cartridges from Provo Craft, so I busted it out and used the Street Sign cartridge to cut out the word wish and the arrows. I love this new font, and I could see myself using the arrows on a lot of my pages. Click, here, to see what others have created with their "new" tools, and join in the forum fun! I used a simple painting techinque on this page and carried it through each element. I used a foam make-up applicator and brushed the paint on the edges and the places where I wanted the journaling stickers to go. I also brushed some paint over the wish word and the arrow to give them some more dimension. I liked using the foam make-up applicator because it gave me more control than a bulky foam brush. Inspiration: I created this page based on a piece of artwork my grandma created many years ago. She's been gone now for a few years, but there's a part of me that wishes she could see the things I'm creating right now. The journaling says: Sometimes I wish you could see the artist in you is now a part of me. Supplies: Letter stickers, Paint: Making Memories Cricut machine/cartridge: Provocraft Cardstock: misc. So Berry Sweet
4/16/2008 1:07:03 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) When I saw K&Co.'s Berry Sweet paper pack, it took me right back to my childhood, growing up '70s Midwestern suburbia. I knew right away that the bright girly colors, and images of butterflies, rainbows, mushrooms and, yes, the owls, would capture my happy memories. They brought back memories of riding my banana seat bicycle, watching Little
House on the Prairie, collecting Wacky Pack cards, making crafts
(loomed potholders, anyone?) and voraciously reading every Nancy Drew book in existence. I've got the makings of a great mini-album for some
of my best memories. I'm purposely creating the album in a basic way,
almost as though I made the album when I was 8. I'm enjoying the
process and the memories and am less concerned with technique. This album is all about the feelings it invokes, and I know it's
one I'll turn to again and again.
And, hey, if you need a good laugh today, check out my ears and my Carol Brady hairstyle. Oh, my! Share your own childhood pictures and memories here!
Best,
Beth layout inspiration

Text as a Design Element
4/14/2008 5:03:03 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I was inspired by Assistant Editor GinaMarie's hybrid layout, so, I created one of my own, using her idea of placing text behind a photo. Here's how I created the page:1. I took one of the photos I shot in the park and added the word "bliss" directly on the photo in Photoshop. I also added the brackets. 2. Then, I opened a new blank 8.5x11 document in Photoshop. I placed the book photo on the page. 3. I placed a digital overlay on top of the entire page and moved that layer back, by going to LAYER>ARRANGE>SEND BACKWARD until it wasn't covering up my photo. I also adjusted the opacity, so the overlay wasn't overpowering. I also knew I wanted to place text on top of it, so I wanted the text to be legible. 4. Next, I created a text layer and typed the two quotations I wanted to use on the page: "We should read to give our souls a chance to luxuriate" (Henry Miller) and "Books are the quietest and most constant of friends ... " (Charles W. Eliot). I varied between black and gray text. 5. I then added gray bars on the top and bottom of the photo to frame it. 6. I printed my embellished photo document, and I glued it directly on my patterned paper. (Note: Before gluing the photo down, I attached a piece of cardboard to the page and layered the photo on top of that to add depth. 7. I finished the page's title "Book Bliss" by adding white letter stickers. 8. The hand-written journaling was placed on a digital journaling circle that I printed. I stapled the journaling block to corrugated cardboard (from a Starbucks cup sleeve) and attached both to the page using foam adhesive squares. 9. To finish the page, I added buttons to the corners of the photo. Hybrid How-to
4/10/2008 10:47:45 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) I wanted to create a background for my photo with a certain amount of significance. In Photoshop Elements, I typed a passage from the Bible to use as my background and then placed a digital overlay and my photo on top of the text. I also included a digital piece of paper for my journaling spot. After I printed the 8x9 digital layout, I placed it on a 12x12 piece of patterned paper and added the title, handwritten journaling and other embellishments to complete the hybrid look. Responding to the Challenge
9/27/2007 12:30:38 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Thanks for the challenge Patty! I knew exactly what pictures I wanted
to use, since I've been holding onto these fall pics since, well … last
fall. What I love most about the fall and any of my favorite seasons is
the way that God’s beautiful creativity shines in every season. These
pics were taken from Kelley’s Island on Lake Erie, pretty close to my
hometown, and I absolutely love watching the sun set on the lake. I
tried to keep my embellishments simple because I wanted the focus to be
on the photos. I cut out the parentheses and arrows from the Rusty
Pickle School Daze collection, and used foam adhesives to give the page
depth. What’s your response to Patty’s Attitude of Gratitude challenge?
I challenge you to stop and think about the things we take for granted
everyday that take our breath away. Create something, inspire everyone. GinaMarie Supplies: Rusty Pickle: all paper used from School Daze collection American Crafts: felt thickers in leg warmers Hambly Screen Prints: rub-ons creative prompt | layout inspiration

Scrapping Everyday Life
9/20/2007 10:12:01 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) In light of Katie’s blog, I wanted to share with you what I created during our fun craft time. I was also inspired by the Love, Elsie Jack + Abby line from KI Memories because it has a lot of neat designs and embelli shments for scrapping about your home, and the color scheme was perfect. I recently moved down to Cincy and purchased new bedding, which was no easy task, because I’m picky and don’t like a bunch of flowery things. After many hours of shopping online … I finally found a coverlet, sheets and pillows that I absolutely love. The brown and blue colors mixed with a simple but graphic design, is completely my style. I wanted to scrap a part of my everyday life, and the simple things like a new bed and bedding that can seriously make you feel, well … warm and fuzzy on the inside. I entitled the page My Sanctuary to emphasize the feeling of rest and peace that I find there. What does your everyday life look like? Feeling Crafty
9/19/2007 10:37:34 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Last night, GinaMarie and I were feeling crafty, so after work, we got
together at my place for some hot apple cider and scrapbooking. As
mentioned in a recent blog, I've been wanting to make a page about
fall, since it's my absolute favorite season. I decided to use product
from the Love, Elsie Jack + Abby line from KI Memories. I felt the colors worked
wonderfully for an autumn-inspired page, and I had fun mixing and
matching all of the coordinating embellishments. I'm happy with the end result. I like that I was able to incorporate an array of different colors, and the Love, Elsie accents were playful additions. I also loved using the fabric patterned paper. When I started the page, I planned to include handwritten journaling with a few of my favorite fall memories. That changed, though, as the page neared completion. Instead, I ended up using a few key words: books, blankets, traditions, colors and memories. I cut the words from the back of the Jack + Abby Words patterned paper. I then used the American Crafts chipboard arrow to connect the title to the key words. —Katie layout inspiration
