hybrid layout designed with the fabulous Tutti Frutti digital kit
7/9/2008 9:14:15 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Last week Katie posted a creative prompt titled "I Am..."

I really had no idea how to finish that sentence because I feel like I am so many things at this point in my life. I decided to design a hybrid layout that allowed plenty of journaling space to detail my life as it is right this moment.

I LOVE this digital kit (Tutti Frutti) by Emily Powers and Paislee Press. Isn't it so cute!?! The colors and patterns are wonderful and the embellishments can be used in so many ways. After I designed the layout I printed it on our Epson R1900 for a gorgeous print, then mounted it to orange cardstock then a piece of 12x12 blue cardstock. Using my new scallop shears (that I absolutely love) I cut around the blue cardstock to get a clean, scalloped edge. I added ribbon, bling, and KI softies, button findings and felt embellishments to add a little dimension to the page.

Hybrid Layout: Step 2
7/8/2008 9:37:59 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

LookAlikesPaperWEB.jpg
As promised, here's my finished hybrid layout. It was a snap to put together.

Here's how it came together:

* I printed the 10x10 digital portion on our R1900 Epson printer.
* I adhered the digital page to the center of a piece of kraft cardstock.
* Using a foam make-up applicator, I applied blue and white paint to the edges of the kraft cardstock. (Almost every page I create lately incorporates paint in some way.)
*I then added a few embellishments to give the page a bit of dimension and texture.

supplies:

(Digital)
Tutti Frutti kit by Emily Powers and Paislee Press
Sticky strips by Amy Hutchinson
Date stamp: Mark That Date by Two Sisters Designs

(Traditional)
kraft cardstock
paint: Making Memories
acrylic accents and flowers: Making Memories
staples

And before signing off, I leave you with this creative prompt: Create a layout that showcases the similarities you share with a sibling or close friend (in appearance, personality, etc.). **And bonus if the layout is hybrid and incorporates paint in some way.**

Creative Prompt: I Am
6/30/2008 11:51:13 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Creative Prompt: I Am.

Interpret this prompt any way you wish. You might want to share your different roles (mother, sister, best friend … ), what you’re doing on a particular day (a slice-of-life focus), how you’re feeling when creating the page, plans for your future, etc.

i am (becoming more me every day)

supplies: Adhesive (Tombow) • Acrylic accents, paint (Making Memories) • Chipboard, button, rubber photo corners (KI Memories) • Letter stickers (KI Memories, Making Memories) • Patterned paper (K&Co.) • Pen (American Crafts) • Stamp (7gypsies) • Text card (Moo) • Misc.: date stamp, ink, staple

For my I Am page, I chose to focus on the ways we’re always changing and growing. My journaling shares some areas of growth in my life at the moment, such as making time for one of my hobbies (creative writing) by joining a writing group and reaching out to my community by searching for volunteer opportunities. Instead of keeping my journaling together in one block, I broke it up by writing on the following surfaces: on chipboard accents, directly on the patterned paper and inside a journaling block stamp.

Additional notes about my page:

• I used products from more than five manufacturers (which is the June Master's Challenge prompt). And even though the month of June is quickly coming to a close, check out the thread in the forum for inspiration and to share your own layout that showcases products from five or more manufacturers.

• To make the second part of my title stand out (the word becoming), I painted on the patterned paper and outlined and doodled on my letter stickers.

If you take part in this creative prompt, please post your layouts in our Online Idea Gallery. (Be sure to specify that you participated in this prompt.) I can't wait to see what you come up with and how you interpret the theme I Am.

All the best,

Katie

Photography: Great Tips for Portraits at Home
6/23/2008 12:55:43 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
If you're not familiar with all the technicalities of photography you might find it challenging to get professional looking photos. I remember my Photography 101 class in college. My instructor wasn't afraid to tell me that I needed to work on my photography skills. Over the years and after much practice and many tips from the experts, I have come to love photography. When I get the time, I love to go out and photograph the world around me.

Digital Photo Academy has some wonderful tips (and visuals) for taking taking portraits of children, pets, and family at home. Click here to check it out.

Here are my pictures from the weekend. The picture of the little boy was taken by my soon-to-be sister-in-law.

Creative Prompt: Take an hour or more and spend some time with your camera. Take photos of the little details you see around you that you sometimes overlook. Scrap a layout or mini-album about your world at present.

note: you don't have to have an expensive, professional camera to take great photos. I use a Sony Cyber-shot, point and shoot camera for all of my pictures and get great results.

must love dogs {mini album}
6/18/2008 11:12:47 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Growing up, there has always been a dog in our home. When I moved out of my parents house I got two of my own. There's something wonderful about coming home to wagging tails and endless kisses. And nothing compares to a stress reliever like a long walk at sunset with two faithful companions. A mini-album documenting some of my most favorite memories with Maizie and Haylee was long overdue. I finally got inspired to create by the KI Memories, 2008 Love, Elsie line (DAISY).

I used few embellishments and did a lot more journaling in this album. I added captions to photos and documented the pups unique personalities. Now I have some of my greatest memories all in one album. I even left a few open pages to finish later when I take more photos.

Creative prompt: create a layout or mini-album about your beloved pet with multiple photos and journaling. It'll surely bring back some warm, fuzzy memories :)

Inspired by the Ordinary
6/12/2008 11:15:25 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Last week, I blogged about finding inspiration in the ordinary.

My creative prompt was:
Find inspiration in the everyday objects you purchase or even with something you have around your house. Look at the packaging and mimic the colors, textures and fonts. Pick something that grabs your attention and inspires you.

As I was flipping through the latest issue of Real Simple, I was inspired to do a layout that looked similar to an article I found in it.
They used dots to point to specific parts of the object and a similar heading at the top of their page. Here's the digital layout I created based on my new favorite fruit drink, Cranergy.

This is a simple page. I didn't even use any embellishments. The most important thing to remember is your inspiration can come from anywhere. Where have you found your inspiration today?

Create something. Inspire everyone.

Sneak Peek:

Tip #9—Save maps. In whole or in part, they’ll add a unique touch to your layouts later.

(Idea: I recently incorporated a map on a collage I created (see below). To capture a textured, collage-like look on a layout, you can use the same technique I did.

Here’s how: Adhere your piece of map using gel medium. Use Vaseline on the places you’d like the map to show through. Then, paint over the entire map surface with acrylic paint. When the paint dries, you will be able to wipe away the areas you covered in Vaseline, revealing sections of your map.)

You’ve got to check out all of the incredibly inspiring reader layouts we have in this month’s galleries: It’s A Guy Thing and Reader Idea Gallery!

As always, please leave comments and let us know what you thought about this issue. We truly enjoy hearing your thoughts/suggestions/ideas.

This weekend, I’m off to my sister’s high school graduation and party. If you have suggestions for documenting graduations/parties, I’d love to hear them. Click here to share your ideas.

Wishing you a wonderful rest of the week,

Katie

Flocked and Foiled: Find Inspiration in the Ordinary
6/3/2008 2:23:06 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

It seems like nowadays you can coordinate anything to match the décor of your house. Even Kleenex boxes have become hip and trendy and are sporting textures that you can find on a lot of scrapbooking paper right now. Check out these flocked and foiled boxes that I picked up at Target the other day. These are not the kind of Kleenex boxes that you would find in your great Aunt Edna’s bathroom.

This week’s challenge: Find inspiration in the everyday objects you purchase or even with something you have around your house. Look at the packaging and mimic the colors, textures and fonts. Pick something that grabs your attention and inspires you.

I will be heading out to the Great American Scrapbooking Convention in Arlington, Texas this week, but I will post a layout next week with a picture of my inspiration. Look for an object this weekend and join me in finding inspiration in the ordinary.

Create something. Inspire everyone.

A Great Question by a Forum Member
5/15/2008 12:19:04 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

On a recent stroll around the forum, I found an excellent question posted by forum member LISAINOK, a.k.a. the question guru. (She is always asking our forum members great questions about all sorts of things.)

THE QUESTION IS:

What's the one tool or item that you just thought you had to have, and now, you never really use it? Why don’t you use it? Is it because it doesn't do what you thought it would, you don't know how to use it, or have you forgotten you have it?

Check out the post by clicking, here, and let us know which tools you haven’t used and why. For those of you who have tools collecting dust, either because you’ve forgotten you bought them or because you were intimidated to use them, I say dust off those tools and put them to good use!

The creative prompt for the week is use a tool that you own, but have never used more than a handful of times. If you're intimidated by your tool, post your questions here and we’ll all try to help you figure it out. Also feel free to post anything you’ve created with your “new” tools.

Create something. Inspire everyone.

Creative Prompt: Inspired by the Weather
4/28/2008 12:59:22 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Creative Prompt:
Take inspiration from the weather and Mother Nature on your next creative project.

When creating this digital page, I was inspired by the beautiful way the world looks after a rainstorm.

The elements in the Puddle Jumper kit were perfect for this page. I especially liked creating with the cloud accents and acrylic embellishments. (And in creating this page, I realized that lately, clouds are an element I'm drawn to. What about you? Are there any images or accents you find yourself gravitating toward?)

Post your weather-inspired pages and projects, here.

And for more inspiration from nature, click here to see beautiful photographs from Master '08 Caroline Ikeji.

Supplies: Puddle Jumper kit from We Are Storytellers designed by Emily Powers and Kasia Sikorska. Font: Dymo Font Invers

(Like what you see? In celebration of National Scrapbooking Day on May 3, we will post a free digital kit designed by Emily Powers on the MM site. Stay tuned to our blog for details!)

Enjoy your Monday (no matter what the weather!).

Get Messy: Layout Ideas
4/7/2008 12:02:57 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

paint.jpgMy weekend was a happy mess of patterned paper, acrylic paint, ink and other lovely supplies. I wanted to play and experiment. I wasn’t sure what the end result would be, but sometimes, it’s liberating to fearlessly play with your supplies and just see what happens. Normally, I feel frustrated when I smear ink or paint, but this weekend, I embraced those imperfections. I just wanted to create.

Today I’m happy to share my imperfect creations with you and tell you a little bit about how they came together. It’s my hope that you’ll be inspired to get messy and create, too—to fearlessly experiment with your supplies and just see what happens!

dessert love

Supplies:
Patterned paper, sticker (KI Memories)
Letter stickers (American Crafts, EK Success)
Transparency (Graphix)
Misc.: kraft cardboard, foam adhesive, acrylic paint, staples, ink, notebook paper

I was inspired by Assistant Editor GinaMarie’s use of a transparency to frame a photo, so I created this page. First, I experimented by laying down multiple strips of patterned paper and my photo. I then used foam adhesive to place a transparency on top of the photo. I embellished the transparency with acrylic paint, using the bottom of a pen to stamp paint circles around the edge of the transparency. The felt title letters and “love” sticker were added on top of the transparency to create another subtle layer. I then inked the edges of the page to add additional texture. It was an accident that the ink ended up being so thick (and that I smeared it a bit on the patterned papers), but it lends personality to the page.

Story behind the page: This page is a tribute to one of my favorite restaurants—Aladdin’s Eatery. When I moved to Cincinnati to work for Memory Makers, I was completely bummed that the closest Aladdin’s Eatery was in Columbus. (Yes, I checked the corporate site when I moved.) However, I just found out that there’s a new Aladdin’s right here in Cincinnati! (And you can bet I’ll be doing a page about my first trip to eat there!)

Creative Prompt: Create a layout about your favorite restaurant. (Hint: Sometimes, getting good food shots can be tricky. Click here to see a page by Assistant Editor GinaMarie and get a few pointers. And remember that lighting is key. When I took the dessert photo above, I took advantage of the fact that we were eating outside and the natural light was perfect.)

permanent ally

Supplies:

Epoxy sticker, patterned paper (KI Memories)
Label sticker (Autumn Leaves)
Letter stickers (American Crafts)
Misc.: graph paper, kraft paper, acrylic paint, bubble wrap, staples, date stamp, ink

I played with acrylic paint on this page, too, using bubble wrap to stamp circles on my kraft cardstock. This layout came together quite quickly. After laying down a few strips of patterned paper and the photo, I added a torn piece of graph paper as a journaling spot, a label sticker for the date and my title. To finish the page, I added the epoxy sticker at the top, left corner of the photo.

I recently purchased the date stamp used on this page, and I’ve had a lot of fun playing with it. (Staying with the imperfect theme of this blog entry, I love the messy look of the stamp. It’s not always straight and the ink sometimes smudges a bit. It’s great!)

Story behind the page: My sister sent me a great text message a few weeks ago, telling me that she’s a permanent ally for me. I thought it was such a funny and cute thing to say. I knew I wanted to scrapbook the memory.

Creative Prompt: Create a page about a funny or memorable text message or e-mail you’ve recently received.

I hope you’re inspired this week to dig out some of your supplies and play. And for another creative prompt, click here.

Wishing you a very inspired week,

Katie

What's in a Name?
4/7/2008 11:57:15 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
When Christy posted this creative prompt on Friday about the origin and meaning of your name, I knew I had to participate. While I enjoy the uniqueness of my name, it does create a stir when I introduce myself to people for the first time. To play up on the humorous questions I'm sometimes asked, I typed a few of them in Photoshop Elements and layered it over my picture before I printed it out. I love the idea of integrating text directly on your photo using an image-editing program or a special pen for shiny surfaces. I made my title stand out by using different letters for my name and by painting the area behind the letters.

I have enjoyed finding new uses for packaging, so on this page, I recycled the front page of a Hambly catalog and used it for a journaling spot. For more creative ways to use packaging check out our Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. article on page 46 of the March/April issue.

I hope Christy's creative prompt inspires you to create a layout about the story behind your name. Post your inspired layouts, here, in the forum and see what others have created, too!

Create something. Inspire everyone.
GinaMarie (capital M, no space)

Journaling:

So even though it can be hard when I first meet people, I still have always enjoyed my slightly unique name. I was named GinaMarie because my parents liked the way it sounded with my last name. They said it kind of sounds like music. I've always enjoyed it, even though it seems difficult for others to understand at first. All of my closest friends know that it's never just Gina. I'm always GinaMarie.

Supplies:
Letters: Ki Memories, Li'l Davis
Transparency: Hambly
Pen: American Crafts
Paint Pens: Marvy, Sharpie
Chipboard embellishment: Ki Memories
Arrow: American Crafts
Flower: Queen & Co.
Adhesive: Tombow
Misc.: Brad, button, cardstock, letters, paint, staples

release some creative energy :: creative prompt
4/4/2008 11:57:41 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Happy Friday!

This week went by so fast. Is anyone else feeling like there are not enough hours in the day? For me, I have to have several hours a week to release all the creative energy that dwells within. But lately, there have been so many things to cross off the to-do list that my creative time has been limited to smaller, 30-miutes or less, projects. This birthday card is one example. Few supplies, glue scissors, and handwritten type made this card  and matching envelope easy to complete.

Find some time to release some creative energy this weekend. I am even going to help you get started...

Use your own handwriting or download this really nice FREE font.

Writing/Creative Prompt: What is the meaning behind your name? Include a some childhood and recent photos of yourself.

Add these to your journaling if you wish:
Find out why your parents gave you the name they gave you.
Did you ever wish you could change your name? What would you have named yourself if you had the chance?
Were you named after a relative? Do you share any similarities with that relative (looks, personality, interests)? Add a photo of that relative.
Or maybe create a page about your children's names.

Post your layouts here.

Have a wonderful weekend!
christy

How to Scrap a Quirky Habit
2/21/2008 11:12:42 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Vb_tongue_Web.jpgAs I was trying to organize my scrapbooking supplies and photos, I stumbled upon some pictures my Dad took of me playing volleyball when I was in high school. I didn’t want every volleyball layout to talk about the good old days of high school, so I choose a consistent pattern I found when I looked through the pictures. After I noticed my tongue was consistently hanging out in several photos, I knew this was something worthy of scrapbooking. I still have a habit of sticking out my tongue when I am concentrating on something. I also included a close up below for good measure. When you look back at pictures from your past, do you see any patterns? Is there anything fun and quirky that you want to capture in a page? I hope this inspires you to do so, and have fun documenting what makes you, you!

Create something. Inspire everyone.

Responding to the Challenge
9/27/2007 12:30:38 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Thanks for the challenge Patty! I knew exactly what pictures I wanted to use, since I've been holding onto these fall pics since, well … last fall. What I love most about the fall and any of my favorite seasons is the way that God’s beautiful creativity shines in every season. These pics were taken from Kelley’s Island on Lake Erie, pretty close to my hometown, and I absolutely love watching the sun set on the lake. I tried to keep my embellishments simple because I wanted the focus to be on the photos. I cut out the parentheses and arrows from the Rusty Pickle School Daze collection, and used foam adhesives to give the page depth. What’s your response to Patty’s Attitude of Gratitude challenge? I challenge you to stop and think about the things we take for granted everyday that take our breath away.

Create something, inspire everyone.
GinaMarie

Supplies:
Rusty Pickle: all paper used from School Daze collection
American Crafts: felt thickers in leg warmers
Hambly Screen Prints: rub-ons
