Techno Tuesday: Organize Your Digital Stash + A Layout Prompt
2/23/2010 3:47:59 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

Whether you're just starting to collect digital freebies or have amassed a solid collection of digital product, you could probaly use some ideas for organizing your stash. In this month's Techo Tuesday, Michelle Coleman of Little Dreamer Designs shares her tips and advice.

Organize Your Digital Product Files

I found that the best (and quickest!) way to organize is to use a program created specifically for digital organization. Depending on how much time or money you’re able to devote to organization, here are some great options:

ACDsee 10 Photo Manager
(This program is not Mac compatible.)
This program lets you attach keywords and categories to your files and search within those keywords. You also can make minor corrections to your photos, such as red-eye removal and erasing blemishes.

iPhoto
(This program is not PC compatible.)
iPhoto (included in iLife) organizes your entire photo library by event, and you can attach a rating or keyword to your digital files to make finding them a snap. You also can quickly create calendars, cards and photo books.

Adobe Bridge
Available in all six editions of Adobe Creative Suite 3, Adobe Bridge allows you to categorize your files using groups and keywords. With the latest version, you can preview multiple files at once (perfect for coordinating patterned papers) and make corrections to your photos.

My Take:
I like using Bridge because it’s already on my computer, it’s easy to use and it was created specifically for Photoshop.

Categorization
Once you’ve settled on a program, the next decision is whether to keep your digital kits together and categorize them by designer, or separate the elements into groups, such as buttons, ribbons, metal, etc.

Michelle’s Categorization System:
I have a main download folder where I unzip my files, and subfolders organized by designer. I like leaving each kit intact. I don’t separate my elements or papers because it makes it easier for me to find the correct credit information after I’ve completed a layout. I do, however, delete any paper or element that doesn’t fit my personal taste.

In Bridge, I add keywords to all products in a kit. The paper gets coded with the pattern/style, the color and the designer’s name. Elements are coded this way, too. If a kit is themed, such as Christmas or birthday, the entire collection gets coded with that keyword. (Helpful hint: In Bridge, to add keywords to more than one item at a time, hold down Control as you select the items.)

Keyword suggestions: color, pattern, designer, element type, shape, kit name, store name, theme

You also might find it helpful to make a special folder or category for favorite items you use again and again, such as your favorite solid papers, or those cluster frames you just can’t get enough of.

Organizing your digital kits and elements lets you spend less time searching for the perfect embellishment and more time actually creating with it. You might even save money because knowing what you have means fewer duplicate purchases.

Techno Tuesday: insert a photo into a digital frame
1/26/2010 2:56:48 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Is one of your goals for the new year to learn something new? If you're not yet a digital scrapbooker, why not learn some tricks of the trade? Traditional scrappers can apply digital techniques to enhance photos and to add creative details to make hybrid layouts.

Once a month, we'll be presenting a technical tutorial to give you some digital know-how.

How to Insert a Photo into a Frame

You will need:
Photoshop Elements
A digital photo
A digital photo frame
(Click here to download the Wild Sorbet digital kit, which includes a photo frame)

(Please note that if you're on a Mac, you'll want to hit the Apple key instead of the Control key for the steps below.)

1. Open your photos. Adjust your exposure/settings, if needed.
2. Select your photo with the Marquee tool. Hit Control+C to copy your photo.
3. Drag your frame onto your layout.
4. Use the marquee tool to draw a selection for your photo. Keep your selection inside the edges of the frame.

5. Create a new layer under your frame layer.

6. Go to Edit>Paste Into. (This will paste your photo into your frame.)

7. You must then re-size your photo to fit. Use keyboard shortcut, Control+T to transform/re-size your photo. Hold down the shift button while you drag your photo from one of the four corners. Holding down the shift button keeps your photo from distorting while you re-size.

8. Repeat these steps to fill your frame with photos. When you’re finished, merge your photos and the frame together into one layer by using keyboard shortcut Control+E. This will allow you to move the finished element around your page.

(This digital frame technique, by Michelle Coleman, appeared in the March/April 2008 issue of Memory Makers magazine. Visit our online store to order a copy of the March/April 2008 issue.)

For lots more digital techniques for scrappers, featuring both Photoshop Elements and Word, check out Paper + Pixels here.

Download a free summer-themed digi kit
6/1/2009 10:59:14 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

When I stepped outside into the cool air this morning, I was reminded of how much I love quiet summer mornings. And now that it's June (happy June 1!), I'm looking forward to enjoying many quiet mornings this summer.

I decided to document this little favorite on a digital layout. Perhaps I will do this all summer and then print each layout to create a mini-album of summer moments. To create Sweet Summer Mornings, I used elements from our free summer kit, Mrs. C's Confectionery, designed by Lisa Warren. Other supplies used: Photo overlay (Paislee Press), acrylic paint accent (The Artist's Canvas by Angela and Emily Powers)

Click here to download the FREE summer kit.

Enjoy! We'd love to see what you make with the kit. Post your creations, here.

Jenni Bowlin Goes Digital
2/24/2009 8:57:06 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Can I just say how excited I am about Jenni Bowlin's foray into the digital world? She's joined our good friends at  {we are} storytellers to launch her gorgeous Spring Picnic line in digital format. I'm not much of a digital scrapper, but this line might just push me over the edge! And the elements are great to have on hand to just print out and use on a traditional layout. Hmm ... Looking at these gorgeous elements gives me hope that spring truly is just around the corner!

Best,
Beth

short on time? make digital valentine's day cards.
2/10/2009 2:30:20 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Time has just gotten away from me the last two weeks. I had every intention, just like Beth, of making some fancy valentine's day cards, but it just didn't happen. Just because I am not making fancy cards, doesn't mean I want to forget the project entirely. So, I relied on several Paislee Press digital kits (Philosophie, Sociologie, Press Lines No. 5-Love, Mailing Label Frames, Ecologie) I already had, pulled red and pink elements from them and layered them to create business card size valentines. I printed them on our Epson R1900 printer and embellished them with ribbon. Simple enough to create in a hurry, pretty enough to give to loved ones.

More Fun Holiday Projects + Inspiration
11/7/2008 1:47:09 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

Like Katie, visions of holiday décor have been dancing in my head.  And it all started with some free downloadable inspiration at Amy Butler Designs.

What struck me most about Amy’s beautiful holiday crafts was the unexpected color scheme: shades of blue and green.  I’m not such a fan of red, and my home is spotted with sage and sky, so it was nice to see an example of holiday cheer in nontraditional colors. Inspired by Amy’s organic, natural holiday décor style, I created this hybrid layout to hang in my living room:

(Digital paper and flower embellishment from the new Philisophie kit by Paislee Press. Tiny alphas from Making Memories. Chipboard alphas, ribbon from American Crafts. Dead Secretary, Cricket fonts from scrapvillage.com.)

I recently went on an Internet treasure hunt for all sorts of holiday paper goodies, and it turns out that nontraditional holiday style is quite the trend.  Here are some of my favorites finds:

1. Happy Holidays rub-ons from Fancy Pants. 2. Two Front Teeth paper from American Crafts Christmas 2008 collection. 3. Letterpress holiday card from etsy seller paperedtogether. 4. Oliver Road paper from Scenic Route Garland Holiday collection. 5. Reindeer Games paper from American Crafts Christmas 2008 collection. 6. Letterpress holiday card from etsy seller YeeHaw. 7. Holiday card design featured on Print + Pattern. 8. Letterpress holiday card from etsy seller afavorite. 9. Once Upon a Christmas digital kit by Emily Merritt and Designs by Lili at We Are Storytellers.

(Photo mosaic made here.)

If your home décor is yellow or blue, your style is funky or modern, or you just want to try something new, kick out of the typical holiday hues box: try raspberry and lime, gold and gray, orange and ivory, or whatever else strikes your fancy.

Let us know what's your holiday decorating wish list and leave a comment on this post.

Happy Friday!
Kristin

Holiday Projects + Inspiration
11/6/2008 9:47:56 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

Lately, visions of holiday decorations have been dancing in my head.

I've been seeing holiday inspiration everywhere—from blogs and Web sites, to store decorations and even Starbuck's holiday marketing campaign. (This morning, when I picked up my skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte, I noticed they were using their holiday cups, which are even an inspiration!) I love the smudgy white designs on the red textured background.

So, of course, with all of this inspiration, I had to make something! I created Tidings of Comfort + Joy after being inspired by the Peace on Earth graphic. I found the Peace on Earth project on Amy Butler's Web site. You can find that project and other free downloadable projects, here.

I plan to use my design on my holiday cards this year and as a wall decoration. I haven't decided on a size yet, but once I do, I will print the design and frame it.

supplies used: Patterned papers (Corina Nielsen, download the FREE kit here) • Leaf accents (Tutti Frutti Kit by Emily Powers and Paislee Press) • Word art (Philosophie, by Paislee Press).

Read Christy's latest blog entry to learn more about the Philosophie kit and to find out where and when you'll be able to buy it.

I LOVE the word art created by Paislee Press. Here are a few word art kits to check out:

What are your holiday decorating plans this year? Are you making cards to send to family and friends?

Be sure to check back tomorrow. MM Books Editor Kristin Boys will stop in to share more holiday decorating ideas.

Happy crafting!

simple, handmade 2009 calendars make great stocking stuffers
11/4/2008 12:48:21 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
This is a project you can make digitally or with paper. Here are two examples of both that I made this past weekend.

Here I used a beautifully designed digital kit by Paislee Press. The papers are gorgeous and I LOVE all the elements. I was introduced to Paislee Press on We Are Storyteller's Web site. This kit is available here on December 1st. You can find inexpensive calendar CD cases here (they even have a mini calendar case).

With the same kit I made a 12x12 layout and placed it in a shadow box that will soon hang on the dining room wall in our new house. I printed the calendar and this layout on our Epson R1900 Photo Printer.

Here's the paper calendar I made. I cut out and painted a piece of canvas for a durable cover. For the inside pages I used patterned papers (that had a vintage look), ribbon, Making Memories Tiny Alphas, and calendar dates that I cut out of this template that I designed. Here is a hi-res PDF file that you can print or a .png file that you can crop and place into a digital calendar or layout.

A good-bye gift album
10/31/2008 9:37:03 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Our sweet coworker, Eileen is leaving the Memory Makers family to pursue a new career as a mom. We’ll really miss Eileen and her sweet nature and great ideas, but we’re really excited for her new path in life.

Of course, being the crafty people that we are, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to do something creative as a good-bye gift. The result of some brainstorming and participation from the MM and North Light craft teams, is a sweet little book full of funny, encouraging and inspiring quotes.  Plus, each page reveals a little pocket with tags of good-bye messages.

To design the pages, we made use of digital paper and elements from the adorable kits available at We Are Storytellers, including Autumn Sky, FALLing Leaves, Puddle Jumper, Kabloom, Once Upon a Dream and Retro Quirk.

And Happy Halloween to you all!  Do you have any crafty (or other) Halloween plans?  Leave a comment and let us know!

Happy Friday,
Kristin

Fall Layout Goodies
10/9/2008 11:19:56 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I love the new Falling Leaves kit by Two Sisters Designs.
Supplies: Falling Leaves kit, paint accents (Two Sisters Designs, Wearestorytellers.com)

And check out this adorable owl patterned paper from the kit:

Isn't it so much fun? I love the patterns and colors in this kit!

And the last fall goodie I have to share today is a card that's in progress:

About a month ago, I started creating this card using a template from Emily Merritt's Once Upon A Dream kit. I might use it as an invite to a little autumn party: apple cider, pumpkin pie, fall movies. Speaking of, do you have any fall movie recommendations?

And how are your fall layouts coming along? I'd love to see what you've been making. Share your artwork, here.

Wishing you all a happy Thursday!

93 days until Christmas ...
9/22/2008 2:41:17 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Can you believe it? My sister sends me a text message last night reminding me of this. I haven't even thought about it to be honest ... but she got me thinking about how these projects that I created last week might make creative and thoughtful Christmas gifts for a teacher, holiday party hostess, co-worker, stylist, etc ...

With a little time and few supplies, you can create these projects in a flash!

My sister just bought a new house a couple of months ago. Her favorite colors are red, white, and black. So I used the new Twilight in My Garden digital kit by Michelle Coleman at Little Dreamer Designs and designed her some recipe cards that would look great in her new kitchen. I designed the 4x6 cards on the computer, printed and cut them, then used ribbon and a tag to create a cute little package.

My mom loves little handmade note cards, so I made her a little pack and gave it to her when my parents came to visit this past weekend. This was a great way to use my scraps and embellishments! I did not buy anything new for this project.

cute. simple. thoughtful. easy to make.

Have a great week!

In the Wake of the Storm
9/15/2008 3:50:49 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
You may have heard that remnants of Hurricane Ike messed with the Midwest yesterday. Among other damage, near-hurricane force winds left 1.5 millions homes without power between Louisville, KY and Columbus, OH including those in the Cincinnati metro area. Which means that the F+W office is without power today, as are the homes of most of my coworkers. Thankfully, I'm among the blessed few that were granted power for the day...along with an unexpected day off.

So, what's a girl to do with some extra free time? Finish a novel? Clean the house?  Fold laundry?  Yeah, right.  She scrapbooks, of course!

I took a walk in the cool of the morning to assess the wind damage near my house. We were spared too much damage in our area,  but fallen tree limbs abounded.

(Bracket journaling box from Michelle Coleman's FREE Bohemian Summer kit.)

My thoughts and prayers are with all the victims of Hurricane Ike as well all those in the Midwest affected by the storm. We hope all our readers are safe and sound!

Happy Monday,
Kristin

Playing With Paint Digitally
9/9/2008 9:57:25 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I was inspired by Contributing Editor Emily Powers' blog yesterday. I use paint on almost all of my traditional pages, so I was excited to try painting in the digital realm.

To create my I Love Local Cafes page, I used the Artist's Canvas kit by Two Sisters Design and had fun customizing the paint accents for my page. (And bonus that I could use any color I could dream up!) Quick, easy and no mess!

Supplies: Backward staple (Emily Powers, wearestorytellers.com) • Paint accents, journaling block (Two Sisters Design, wearestorytellers.com) • Patterned paper (Kathryn Wilson, wearestorytellers.com) • Letters (Angela Powers, Emily Powers, wearestorytellers.com)

Creative Prompt: Play with paint this week—either traditionally or digitally. Post your finished pages and projects, here. I'll pick one or two to feature next week right here in the blog and in our weekly e-newsletter.

Painting Without the Mess
9/8/2008 1:47:49 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Do you love adding paint to your layouts, but hate the mess?

When I want to add paint to an art project, I have to drag out all of my supplies, set my three-year-old up with her own painting station and then the clean-up...oh! I might as well just break out the hose. Somehow, even our dogs get paint in their fur.

I often invite the mess in the name of creativity, but sometimes I'm short on time and patience. That's when I reach for my one-stop-digi-art-supply-shop. My sister, Angela, and I created The Artist's Canvas for digtal and hybrid artists. It's filled with art strokes, marks, splats, lines, overlays, borders and corners.

Here's a layout I created for the Hodge Podge Challenge that is full of digital paint! Quick, easy and NO MESS!

CREDITS: Anchors Away by Emily Powers, Emily Merritt and Tiff Brady. Scrap Stash: Chipboard by Two Sisters Designs. Acrylic Stickers 1 by Emily Powers. The Artist's Canvas by Two Sisters Designs. Life Snip Stickers (from a variety of kits and element packs) by Emily Powers. Deco Borders by Emily Powers. Snapshots Frames by Paislee Press. Alphabet Soup: Acrylic by Emily Powers. Art Nation: Blossom by Emily Powers. Fonts: Pea Cammi-Pea, CK Painterly.

If you are a hybrid scrapper, you could add paint to a piece of digital paper and print. Then you could add your photo, journaling and paper elements in the traditional manner.

You can also find a great FREE paint font here.

Grace and Peace,

Emily Powers

Emily is a freelance artist and photographer from northeast Ohio. She is a 2009 Contributing Editor to Memory Makers Magazine. She's married to her high school sweetheart and has a three-year-old daughter and three furry children.

Digital Embellishments: Not Just for Scrapping
9/5/2008 10:21:33 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
It’s no secret that there seems to be a thousand different ways to use scrapbook embellishments for non-scrapping purposes (like Master ’09 Jaime Warren’s adorable necklaces.) With an ever-growing stash, I’m always thinking about new uses for traditional scrapbook supplies. But what about those digital embellishments cluttering my hardrive?

I love crafting digital and hybrid pages, but rarely think beyond layouts for using digi elements. It wasn’t until the other day while playing around with wedding (not mine) invitation ideas that I realized how well digital embellishments translated into clean and modern stationery designs. With my social circle brimming with upcoming wedding and births, I have tons of opportunities to put digi embellishment to use. Here are just a few ideas:

Wedding Invitation: Leaf embellishment from the Tutti Frutti kit by Emily Powers & Paislee Press at We Are Storytellers.

“Save the Date” Card: Swirl embellishment from the Bohemian Summer kit by Michelle Coleman (of Little Dreamer Designs).

Birth Announcement: Leaf embellishment from the Tutti Frutti kit by Emily Powers & Paislee Press at We Are Storytellers. Bird embellishment is from the Puddle Jumper kit, also by Emily Powers.

What can you do with your digital embellishments? Don’t forget about our free digital kit downloads. Have fun and play around this weekend!

Happy crafting,
Kristin

Hybrid Card and a Fond Farewell
8/15/2008 10:03:37 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
I made this hybrid card for our oh-so-talented Art Director, Christy. It's her birthday tomorrow, so make sure to wish her happy birthday! I used the Once Upon a Dream kit by Emily Powers and added some dimension with ribbons, a button and chipboard letter on top.

I also wanted to chime in and wish you all a fond farewell! I'm moving back to my hometown to be married in September, so I will no longer be a member of the Memory Makers team. I'm sure I'll be popping up here and there, so keep your eyes open. I have enjoyed my time here and not only working with a fantastic team, but working with many of you! Thanks for making this year so rewarding and fun.

Create something. Inspire everyone.

Lots of photos? Here's a time-saving solution for getting your photos scrapped.
8/1/2008 1:00:56 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

... Mini-Albums. I love them! I take a ton of photos during one event, and rather than choosing one to three and create a layout, I can fit a lot into a small album. Combine hybrid scrapping + a mini-album and you get a great time-saving solution for using lots of photos.

Luke and I had our engagement photo session with our photographer at the beginning of June. We had a lot of great photos. I narrowed it down to 12 of my favorite and created this little album to display at our wedding. I also included journaling describing our different personalities and little quirks.

While it's convenient (and tempting) to go out and buy an album, I am on a tight budget these days with only 5 weeks to go until the wedding and house hunt. So I made my own album out of corrugated (cover) and thin cardboard (inside pages) that I had leftover from another project.

Here's the step by step:
1. Find a mini-album template from your favorite digital designer and download it. (I downloaded the Tutti Frutti 4x6 Quick Page Album from We Are Storytellers.) Gather some cardboard or a blank album you already have.

2. Design your album in PhotoShop, PS Elements, or any design program with the digital template you downloaded.

3. Print and trim your pages. (I printed my pages on our Epson R1900 and trimmed them with an Xacto knife).

4. Now is the time to add embellishments to your pages that you don't want sticking through the other side of your cardboard. For example I wanted stitching on my cover, but I didn't want to see the stitching on the other side of the cardboard. So I stitched the cover before I adhered it the cardboard so that it looked seamless. (This would be a good time to add any brads.)

4. Measure and cut out cardboard to match the size of your album. Adhere your designed pages to the cardboard. (My album is 4x6 and I used Tombow Mono Adhesive)

5. Use a hole punch to create holes for binding. Use ribbon, binder rings, or other binding method to finish your album.

6. Add any stamps, embellishments or handwritten journaling to finish the album.

This hybrid album took about half the time it would have taken me if I didn't start with a digital template. Do you have any time-saving tips to share for making mini-albums or multi-photo layouts?

Have a great weekend!
Christy

Digital + Paper + Paint = Cute Card
7/23/2008 12:19:53 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

My first ever hybrid card. I must say that I am pretty excited about how it
turned out. I have been experimenting more with digital and paint lately, and
this project was a great way to bring the two together.

You can create something similar by following these simple steps:

1. Cut out a template from a neutral piece of cardstock. (My
template is a 5x10-inch rectangle. When it's folded, the final size is
a 5x5 inch square.)

2. Find a digital piece of paper that you love and print it. (I printed
a design by Tiff Brady at We Are StoryTellers.) If you
don't have any digital elements, find a piece of patterned paper and use that
instead.

3. Cut out your paper design and glue it on your template.

4. Find embellishments that complement the paper’s design and adhere
them to the card. (I used felt and paper flowers, a brad and white ribbon.)

5. Choose paint colors that complement your card’s colors. Take a small
paint brush or sponge, and paint around the sides of your card, or around
the main design on your card. (I used red acrylic paint and several shades of green to
paint around the flowers to draw attention to them.)

6. I cut a strip off the front of the card with scalloped shears to add a
decorative edge to the card and to reveal a portion of the inside of the
card (a great place to hand write something!).

7. Let the paint dry before you decorate the inside of the card.

8. Finally, add any photos, embellishments and paint to the inside of the card.
(I used a little card that I got from Moo.com, painted around its edges with
the same paint colors I used on the front of the card, and then added little
Pearls.)

Add your sentiment and a stamp and mail it to someone you really care about.
Trust me, they will never throw this card away :)

Oh, and here are some fun photos from my bridal shower. I have to tell you that my fabulous sister made the cupcakes. Aren't they gorgeous and so professional looking?) I can't wait to add all my photos to the album I made.

Have a great day!

4th of July Layout
7/15/2008 9:17:57 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

This Fourth of July celebration was my first in Cincinnati since I moved here about a year and a half ago. Last year I celebrated my freedom while on a missions trip in Mamelodi, South Africa (what a humbling experience celebrating freedom where the simplest of freedoms don't exist). It was also the first fourth of July that Luke and I were able to enjoy together with family and friends. Definitely a special Fourth of July to document!

Supplies:
I Am Free kit by Emily Powers (check out Katie's blog entry to see her layout using the same kit)
Epson R1900 printer to print the 10x10 digital layout
• Red cardstock for mounting my 10x10 layout to create a 12x12 layout.
• I used bling, brads, ebellishments,  and Gel-A-Tins Save the Date stamps (which are SO awesome)
Zig Millennium pen for all the journaling and Staedtler Triplus Fineliner markers for outlining and drawing on my page.

Share your fourth of July layouts with us here.

Have a great day!
Christy

Fourth of July Layout
7/14/2008 9:57:48 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

fourthofjulyWEB.jpg
Have you scrapped your Fourth of July memories yet? On Saturday, I created this hybrid page to document a lovely dinner and trip to the fireworks with Art Director Christy Miller.

(I apologize for the slightly crooked scan of this page.)

I used the I Am Free kit by Emily Powers, which is chock full of digital elements that have a great textured look. I especially enjoyed using the paint and torn kraft paper elements, as those are often staples on paper layouts I create.

Lately, I've been loving the time-saving nature of hybrid layouts. For this page, I mounted my 10x10 digital page on notebook patterned paper from KI Memories. I added staples (because I like the look of staples but also because I ran out of my Tombow adhesive while scrapping this page). Then, I added the white glitter chipboard letters and accents from American Crafts.

Final step: Adding the date stamp in the upper, right corner, which is quickly becoming a constant on my pages. After admiring Kal Barteski's use of the date stamp, I've become quite fond of the smudgy, imperfect look it leaves on my pages. (I also appreciate her bulletproof postive attitude. What a great way to create!)

Have a great Monday!

—Katie

hybrid layout designed with the fabulous Tutti Frutti digital kit
7/9/2008 9:14:15 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Last week Katie posted a creative prompt titled "I Am..."

I really had no idea how to finish that sentence because I feel like I am so many things at this point in my life. I decided to design a hybrid layout that allowed plenty of journaling space to detail my life as it is right this moment.

I LOVE this digital kit (Tutti Frutti) by Emily Powers and Paislee Press. Isn't it so cute!?! The colors and patterns are wonderful and the embellishments can be used in so many ways. After I designed the layout I printed it on our Epson R1900 for a gorgeous print, then mounted it to orange cardstock then a piece of 12x12 blue cardstock. Using my new scallop shears (that I absolutely love) I cut around the blue cardstock to get a clean, scalloped edge. I added ribbon, bling, and KI softies, button findings and felt embellishments to add a little dimension to the page.

Hybrid Layout: Step 2
7/8/2008 9:37:59 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

LookAlikesPaperWEB.jpg
As promised, here's my finished hybrid layout. It was a snap to put together.

Here's how it came together:

* I printed the 10x10 digital portion on our R1900 Epson printer.
* I adhered the digital page to the center of a piece of kraft cardstock.
* Using a foam make-up applicator, I applied blue and white paint to the edges of the kraft cardstock. (Almost every page I create lately incorporates paint in some way.)
*I then added a few embellishments to give the page a bit of dimension and texture.

supplies:

(Digital)
Tutti Frutti kit by Emily Powers and Paislee Press
Sticky strips by Amy Hutchinson
Date stamp: Mark That Date by Two Sisters Designs

(Traditional)
kraft cardstock
paint: Making Memories
acrylic accents and flowers: Making Memories
staples

And before signing off, I leave you with this creative prompt: Create a layout that showcases the similarities you share with a sibling or close friend (in appearance, personality, etc.). **And bonus if the layout is hybrid and incorporates paint in some way.**

Hybrid Layout: Step 1
7/7/2008 11:22:47 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

LookAlikesWEB.jpg
I created this 10x10 layout to use on a hybrid scrapbook page. After printing, I plan to mount it on patterned paper or cardstock and add a few embellishments to create texture and depth.

Stay tuned. Tomorrow I'll post the finished page and supply list.

Happy Monday!

short on time? try hybrid scrapbooking
6/27/2008 9:58:04 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
I will admit that when digital scrapbooking became an option, I was less than impressed with the digital projects out there. I thought that there was no way to get a layout that compared to the look and feel of paper scrapping.

And then I found several designers whose work I fell in love with and who never disappointment me with their selection of digital products. Once I started getting into a groove, digital scrapbooking became fun and a much faster way to get my photos and layouts in albums with less mess. I guess I should mention it makes my piggy bank happy too :)

I still love getting out all my supplies and painting, ripping paper and creating layouts with real texture (I still do this often), but hybrid scrapping is splitting equal time with paper scrapping these days.

I took some pictures last weekend and created a layout with one of the photos. I used Little Dreamer Designs Summer Time digital kit to create a 10"x10" layout. After designing the layout on the computer, I printed it using our Epson R1900 Photo printer and mounted it to a blue piece of cardstock that coordinated with the layout.

Here are the areas that I added embellishments:
• The rays of the sun are ribbon.
• I added buttons to frame the smaller photo.
• There is bling on the small flowers and on the large flower.
• I added stickers letters on the big flower to spell out the name of the little boy.
• There is a brad in the corner of the large photo.
• Dimensional glue outlines the waves on the bottom of the layout.
• A felt button is glued in the center of the small yellow flower.

I got the best of both scrapping worlds with this layout: I got to play with my supplies to add dimension, while getting to play with some really cool digital embellishments and paper.

I love having the option of hybrid scrapping when there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day! Have you tried hybrid scrapping?

Happy Friday!!

A New Toy to Enjoy!
6/25/2008 8:53:23 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I went home this weekend eager to see my fiance and my family, but I wasn't counting on this delightful surprise. After dinner, my dad went into the bedroom and came out with a Nikon box. My heart kind of fluttered inside.

My dad had just upgraded his camera and bought the Nikon D300 and he knew I was looking into a digital SLR of my own, but with the wedding approaching, I figured I'd wait and buy something later. Much to my surprise, he handed his Nikon D100 over to me and began to explain some of the different functions. It was completely over my head and I loved it! I created this layout about the new camera, and I included one of the first pictures I took of Zach with it. I love the look on his face as he was talking to my mom, and I'm loving the results from this new camera.

I can't wait to learn more about the art of photography. If you're interested in learning a few photography hints, check out, our Art Director, Christy's blog for some fabulous tips.

Inspired by the Ordinary
6/12/2008 11:15:25 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Last week, I blogged about finding inspiration in the ordinary.

My creative prompt was:
Find inspiration in the everyday objects you purchase or even with something you have around your house. Look at the packaging and mimic the colors, textures and fonts. Pick something that grabs your attention and inspires you.

As I was flipping through the latest issue of Real Simple, I was inspired to do a layout that looked similar to an article I found in it.
They used dots to point to specific parts of the object and a similar heading at the top of their page. Here's the digital layout I created based on my new favorite fruit drink, Cranergy.

This is a simple page. I didn't even use any embellishments. The most important thing to remember is your inspiration can come from anywhere. Where have you found your inspiration today?

Create something. Inspire everyone.

Sneak Peek:

Tip #9—Save maps. In whole or in part, they’ll add a unique touch to your layouts later.

(Idea: I recently incorporated a map on a collage I created (see below). To capture a textured, collage-like look on a layout, you can use the same technique I did.

Here’s how: Adhere your piece of map using gel medium. Use Vaseline on the places you’d like the map to show through. Then, paint over the entire map surface with acrylic paint. When the paint dries, you will be able to wipe away the areas you covered in Vaseline, revealing sections of your map.)

You’ve got to check out all of the incredibly inspiring reader layouts we have in this month’s galleries: It’s A Guy Thing and Reader Idea Gallery!

As always, please leave comments and let us know what you thought about this issue. We truly enjoy hearing your thoughts/suggestions/ideas.

This weekend, I’m off to my sister’s high school graduation and party. If you have suggestions for documenting graduations/parties, I’d love to hear them. Click here to share your ideas.

Wishing you a wonderful rest of the week,

Katie

More Digital Kit Inspiration!
5/23/2008 3:29:40 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

I was recently inspired by Michelle Coleman's new Bohemian Summer kit that can be downloaded, here, free. Katie and I also used some embellishments from the Emily Power's free Art Nation—Blossom kit that can be downloaded here.

These kits are so much fun to play with and can be mixed interchangeably. I enjoy mixing the paper and embellishments from different kits to capture an eclectic style. On this layout, I used a digital natural brush in Photoshop Elements to give the appearance of a paint behind my title. For more digital kit inspiration, visit our Associate Editor, Katie's blog entry.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends. Make sure to grab your camera and create some digital layouts with these amazing free kits!

Creative Prompt: Inspired by the Weather
4/28/2008 12:59:22 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Creative Prompt:
Take inspiration from the weather and Mother Nature on your next creative project.

When creating this digital page, I was inspired by the beautiful way the world looks after a rainstorm.

The elements in the Puddle Jumper kit were perfect for this page. I especially liked creating with the cloud accents and acrylic embellishments. (And in creating this page, I realized that lately, clouds are an element I'm drawn to. What about you? Are there any images or accents you find yourself gravitating toward?)

Post your weather-inspired pages and projects, here.

And for more inspiration from nature, click here to see beautiful photographs from Master '08 Caroline Ikeji.

Supplies: Puddle Jumper kit from We Are Storytellers designed by Emily Powers and Kasia Sikorska. Font: Dymo Font Invers

(Like what you see? In celebration of National Scrapbooking Day on May 3, we will post a free digital kit designed by Emily Powers on the MM site. Stay tuned to our blog for details!)

Enjoy your Monday (no matter what the weather!).

A Family Tradition
3/27/2008 12:23:02 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
biscotticookies_Web.jpgEvery holiday my mom makes these amazing soft batch biscotti cookies. She adapted a recipe from my Dad’s mom and they’ve become a Reda staple. Even though I’ve been helping my mom make these cookies since I was little, I’ve never documented this family tradition … until now.

I didn’t journal a lot on this layout because I wanted the focus to be on the pictures. The lighting was perfect in their kitchen so I didn’t need a flash, but I used my tripod to stabilize the camera. For the close up pictures of the M&Ms and biscotti cookies, the macro setting on my camera did the trick. The spring colors of the M&Ms made these cookies look as amazing as they taste.

Here’s the recipe for my Mom’s Soft Batch Biscotti

4 cups of flour
1 cup of sugar
1 T. of baking powder
¼ t. salt
1 ½ cups of shortening
2 eggs (slightly beaten)
1/3 cup of milk
1 t. vanilla
optional: M&Ms of your choice

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening (blend as in a pie crust). Add eggs, milk and vanilla—mix thoroughly. Mix with hands until mixture will not crumble when squeezed together. Add a little shortening and/or milk to gain the proper consistency. Roll small pieces along a table to form logs the size of breakfast sausages. Place on cookie sheets about ¾“ apart and bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until lightly brown.

Optional: Decorate logs with M&Ms before baking by pushing them in half way with different colors to match holidays or special occasions. Sprinkle with powdered sugar after cooling.

Makes 2-3 dozen depending on log size.

If you make a batch, let me know what you think!

Saving Time With Digital Overlays
3/17/2008 8:00:57 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

Lately, I've been appreciating the time-saving appeal of digital frames and overlays. Case in point: Yesterday, I wanted to create a layout about the new cereal I can't stop eating (I've purchased three boxes in the last few weeks.) This page took about 15 minutes to put together.

First, I snapped the photo (and ate the cereal, of course.) Then, I placed the image on the page. To add embellishment, I used a digital overlay from the Glitz Design collection I blogged about Friday.

The black overlay perfectly framed the page, adding flourishes in two of the corners, graph-paper-like lines and dots that look like ink splotches.

I changed the color of the frame to red by going to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>
HUE/SATURATION. To finish, I added the title, the journaling accent and the journaling.

Do you find that scrapping digitally sometimes can help save time? What time-saving tricks do you take advantage of?

And what are your latest food obessions? Scrap them! I think it will be fun to look back a few years from now and see the quirky little things that were part of my everyday.

Happy Monday!

Katie

Even More Digital Fun!
3/14/2008 10:26:17 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)

FlowersLayout.jpgI had fun creating this layout using the Glitz Design collection that Christy and GinaMarie recently used. (Click their names to see their very inspiring creations. Or, you can just scroll down. They posted earlier this week.)

While browsing through the collection's many enticing elements, I was immediately drawn to the playful, doodled frames. I choose one to showcase the photo of my tulips and went from there.

I knew I wanted to use a neutral cream background, so the colorful flower photo would stand out, but it took me a while to settle on the pink, green and black color combo.

I added the adorable tree accent to punch up the title treatment.

Wishing you a wonderful and inspiring weekend,

Katie

More Digital Fun!
3/13/2008 11:39:29 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Favorite_things_LO.jpgAfter seeing all of Christy's super-cute digital layouts, I wanted to get in on the action! Each time I create a digital layout, I try to expand my style or do something I normally wouldn't do with my traditional pages. It was so fun to play with the Glitz Design collections. There were so many things I liked, so I had a hard time choosing. I finally decided on a colorful and bold background to bring out the bright colors in my photo. I feel the freedom to go bold with digital because I know it can always be changed in the future. It's harder to change things with a traditional page, which is why I play with things for a while before gluing anything down. Does your digital style differ from your traditional style? For those of you who are branching into digital, do you feel more freedom? Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

Create something. Inspire everyone.

Digital Fun
3/11/2008 12:22:11 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
Being snowed in on Saturday meant lots of creative time. I got this CD from Glitz Design that has 6 digital scrapbook collections on it. All the collections are very different and include paper, accents, doodles, flourishes, frames, brushes, journaling cards, overlays, ribbon, and word art (i know, a lot on one CD)! The journaling cards are SO cute! The possibilities were endless. It was so convenient having everything on one CD and I didn't even have to make a mess, which I tend to do when I get out the paper, scissors and glue. I love paper scrapping, but this was a lot of fun to play around with. Oh, and I made a card too. I'll post that later this week after I finish it.

Do you have any favorite digital kits?

Tips for Using the New Wild Sorbet Kit
1/31/2008 12:17:51 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Angelas_LO_Web.jpgHave you downloaded the new FREE Wild Sorbet kit by Michelle Coleman? If not, you can download it here. I’ve had so much fun playing with this kit because the beautiful, bright colors remind me of spring, which I hope will be here in a month … or two … or possibly three, since I do live in Ohio.

I kept things pretty simple because I didn’t want to take away from the gorgeous background paper. I also wanted to showcase my sister’s pictures without a lot of distraction.

I created the white flowers and notebook paper in Photoshop Elements using parts of the Wild Sorbet kit. See below for how-to instructions.

White Flowers:
  1. To create the white flowers, open the background paper and use your magic wand tool to select one of the flowers.
  2. Hit the move button and move the flower onto the layout as a separate layer.
  3. Select the layer and go to Enhance>Adjust color>Adjust hue saturation.
  4. Hit the colorize button and take away the color making the flower white.
  5. To make the flower stand out, I duplicated the flower bud layer so it appeared heavier on the page.
  6. Use a thin brush to draw the lines of the stems.

Notebook paper:
  1. Open a coordinating background paper from the kit.
  2. Choose a small section and move it onto the layout as a new layer.
  3. Select the eraser tool and choose the block eraser.
  4. Erase blocks on the paper in a straight line down the edge.
  5. Make the block eraser brush smaller and erase a line from the edge of the paper to the erased hole to make it look like notebook paper has been torn from a pad of paper.

What have you done with your FREE Wild Sorbet kit? Post your layouts in the forum here, and get great ideas from other scrapbookers!

Create something. Inspire everyone.

FREE Digital Kit
1/29/2008 4:39:04 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
As promised, I'm back with the link to Michelle Coleman's FREE Wild Sorbet digital kit.

I had a chance to play a bit with this fantastic kit (see below) and I can't wait to create another layout. The Wild Sorbet kit is chock full of inspiring papers and elements. (There's so much more I want to use!) I especially like the digital frames, even though they didn't work for this particular page. Get a frame tutorial from Michelle, here.

For this page, I took design inspiration from Master '08 Caroline Ikeji.

Supplies:
Acrylic heart, star (Wild Sorbet Kit, Michelle Coleman)
Flourishes, stitches (Embrace Life Kit, Sande Krieger)
Handstamped Alpha (Michelle Coleman, littledreamerdesigns.com)

After you've had a chance to play with this kit, post your creations in the forum.

We can't wait to see what you come up with!

30-day Photography Challenge
1/21/2008 10:48:37 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

Like Tracie, I, too, have been challenging my photography skills this January.

And so the story goes: During a lovely morning of blog browsing, I stumbled upon Soule Mama's blog. Her photography and writing drew me in, and after a bit of reading, I discovered that she was participating in a 30-day Photography Challenge. And because one of my January hopes is improving my photography skills and the way I view the world through the lens, I couldn't resist participating.

So, I keep my camera close, and snap the details of the day that catch my eye. It certainly is an exercise in paying attention and appreciating those things you might otherwise overlook: a lunch routine not complete without Diet Coke, the sun setting on the way home from work, a bedside table piled with favorite books, a beloved coffee mug.

Are you participating in any photo challenges this year? If so, please leave a link in the comments section. I'd love to be inspired by what you're seeing.

Layout credits: The digital frames are a little sneak peek of an exclusive kit Michelle Coleman created for Memory Makers. During the next few weeks, stay tuned to this blog for details on how you can get the kit for free! The Embrace Life accent is from Sande Krieger's Embrace Life kit. You can download the kit for free here.

Happy Monday,

Katie

Have you posted your Black-&-White layout for a chance to win?
12/7/2007 10:19:45 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Ikea-Layout_Web1.jpgThe Black-&-White Challenge will be coming to an end Tues, Dec. 11 at midnight so don't miss your opportunity to win a cool black and white KI Memories prize package! Post your layout in the forum for a chance to win. I know that life might be a bit busy with Christmas just around the corner, but who can pass up an opportunity to win amazing scrapbooking supplies?

The layout I created for this challenge was also a tribute to one of my favorite stores: Ikea. For those of you that have experienced Ikea ... isn't it fun? And if you never have you should hunt down the nearest store :) While I was at home for Thanksgiving my family and I took a trip to the nearest Ikea in Canton, Michigan to celebrate my sister's birthday (since we both absolutely love the store). We spent a few hours just wandering around and pointing out all of the things we liked. There were not any big purchases made, but we all had such a great time together! I'm counting down the days when Ikea will soon be only minutes away from me here in Cincy...ahh inspirational bliss at my fingertips!

Post your Black-&-White challenges here, and show us your true colors!

Create something. Inspire everyone.

Supplies and Techniques:
I created the black and white background by scanning one of the pages from Ikea's 2008 magazine. I changed it into grayscale, and added the difference layer to give it that reverse x-ray effect. The pic was taken by my sister and I saturated the color a bit to make it pop.
Brads: Michelle Coleman's Free Digital Kit Frosted (I changed the hue/saturation.)
Journaling circle: Sande Kreiger's Free Digital Kit Embrace Life

Having Fun with the Embrace Life FREE Digital Kit
11/29/2007 4:06:58 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Lights-of-Nashville_Web.jpgThis is my first creation with Sande Krieger's Embrace Life Kit that you can download here for free. The colors are nice and bright and complemented the photo I edited at picnik.com perfectly. One of my favorite embellishments in the kit is the swirl with the music notes inside. They were originally black and white but I changed the color in Photoshop Elements going to Enhance - Adjust Color – Hue/Saturation. I then clicked the colorized button and adjusted the hue/saturation levels to match the other colors in the layout.

This layout was inspired by a recent road trip my boyfriend and I had to Baton Rouge. On the way home we spent a few hours in Nashville, Tennessee. The city is alive with the sounds of music…ahhhhh (I can hear Julie Andrews now). And it’s booming out of every bar or should I say, honky tonk. It was such a fun break in our 14-hour road trip. Zach even let me take a few posed shots of him like the one I used in this layout. I hope you have fun creating amazing things with Sande’s Embrace Life Kit!

Testing the Digi-Waters
10/18/2007 12:01:32 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00)
I have wanted to test the digi-waters for quite some time, so when I found Picnik.com, I was excited to try my hand at digital or hybrid scrapbooking. This free online site allows you to download pics from flickr, picasa, facebook, photobucket or your computer. All of the basic tools are free, but if you waHomeWarmth_Web.jpgnt something a little more advanced, it’s only $24.95 for the year.

I had to download the latest flash player, but it was painless and quick, and I was able to begin editing in minutes. At Picnik.com you can edit, crop, resize, sharpen, delete red eye and use other basic tools. The real fun comes in when you add effects, text and shapes to your photos. There are really a lot of possibilities, and I had such a fun time exploring the different effects. Once you’ve created the effect you want, you can save the image to your computer, share them on your blog or print them whenever you get a chance.

If you have drooled over layouts like the one in Master ’08 Tracie Radtke’s last blog, now is your chance to experiment with hybrid scrapbooking and all-digital layouts. I think Picnik is a great option if you want to experiment without investing a lot of money into a photo-editing program. I really liked the results, given the fact that I was able to do Dad_Web.jpgeverything online without downloading or investing any money. If you decide to test the waters and want to talk about it, check out the Testing the Digi-waters thread in the forum. Let me know what you think about picnik.com, or share information about other photo sites you love.
